Just what we wanted: A more expensive Mac Mini.

Tim's greed never ends.

I agree 100%. It seems that while Steve Jobs was around, he tempered Tim’s bean counter mentality to what I think was a very nice compromise between high profitability and creative products for everyone.

Now, it’s just greed greed greed.

I’ve got a new MB Pro 2016 with touch bar that was maxed out at the time with a 2 TB SSD and max i7 CPU. It went dead back in March 2018 under warranty. Apple had to replace the motherboard. They gave me back a basically new machine with a blank 2 TB drive installed with the prior Sierra version (it has High Sierra on it when it died). I objected loudly because due to the ONE COMPONENT build now, nothing on the MB Pro is replaceable except maybe the RAM. I spent four days rebuilding the 2 TB SSD from my time machine backup. I was more than livid at Apple and to this day regret the whole purchase.

Salt has been poured onto an already open wound by my experience with my new and very expensive MB Pro. The initial wound was from the Mac Mini late 2014 which is just slightly better than a boat anchor with soldered memory.

So keep up the greed Tim and you will find yourself in the shoes of Sun Microsystems or DEC.

Apple has a fervent following that is slowly being whittled away by the greed and throw-away products coming out.

It's a Mac rumor renaissance!

The new Mac mini is just going to be a glass and aluminum sphere that's 4 inches in diameter with USB-C ports on it. What more do you need(tm)? RAM and SSD will be soldered in, reducing the form factor to, well, nothing.

Everything else will be wireless, and the surface will have an inset OLED status display. It'll come with a nice stand as well.

I mean, how cool would that be?

You're thinking of how Apple was a decade ago. Today's Apple is releasing new products in such a way that the product lines just become more and more confusing, or to put it in other words, slowly heading back to the 90's.

Just look at what an iPhone buyer has to decide: iPhone SE - smallest and cheapest, but older tech and no 3D Touch; iPhone 8 - larger and more expensive, newer tech; iPhone 8 Plus - larger than the 8 and X but screen is worse than the X; iPhone X - smaller but better screen than the 8 Plus, Face ID/no home button, higher price. And to confuse you even further, maybe you'd like a cheaper but older iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, or iPhone 7 Plus instead.

Ten years ago there was only one iPhone model. Today there really shouldn't be any more than three, all with feature and design parity (aside from a few features exclusive to the high-end models), and primarily different screen sizes to differentiate: SE, non-Plus, Plus.

Funny how so many people know more about the art of marketing than a 1Trillion company.

As a lawyer who runs Office day in and day out, I am highly offended.

But then again, this is coming from someone who up until recently had a 2014 MacBook Air that ran this high-end track-changes Word workflow beautifully.
I'm an attorney as well and I live in Microsoft Office. I could do my job on a Chromebook or an iPad with a keyboard (and have on occasion).

My current gear is way, way more power than I'll ever need. Outlook does not run any faster :)

This MacBook Air (or whatever they call it) would be a perfect travel machine for me.

Well maybe I'll get the new Mini, unless Timmy Cook decides to weld everything in there and bolt it shut with special screws.
Then I'll just grab a watch band or two. And tweet some new emoji's, they're so fun and innovative!
Thanks Timmy Cook!

If Apple does take the Mac mini “Pro” don’t be surprised if it consists of this - https://www.anandtech.com/show/13242/hot-chips-2018-intel-on-graphics-live-blog - 100w TDP, up to 64GB of DRAM, x8 PCIe lanes left for storage and Thunderbolt 3. The real question is whether or not Apple keeps the existing enclosure or a new one and do they have a decent thermal solution for those extra 55w or do they stick to the 65w TDP Kaby Lake G? October seems far away now.

I have a theory. They're gonna drop the "Air" moniker because the plain MacBook is already thinner than the legacy MacBook Air. I think Apple made the the 12 inch MacBook's to experiment working on an even smaller version and apply what they've learned to a new 13 inch model. It will be a plain MacBook with a 13 inch Retina display, just my guess.

Mac Mini will finally bring quad-core back... the problem is... the rest of Apple’s lineup as moved on to 6-Core.
Why wouldn't there be a possibility for a Mac Mini Pro or just Mac Pro with 6/12/18 processor options?

Would be awesome if they could merge the product lines and keep the power of the Air line.

I believe what krause734 was trying to say is some Mac users have lost patience. Furthermore although macOS is my primary platform I run Linux Mint in a Parallels Desktop virtual environment and its a mighty fine OS.
so could you replace mac os with windows and lean more heavily on mint?

I want more power and less design fluff. The current form factor of the mini is fine, just make it perform better and make it expandable. Call it pro if necessary.

I still think the ‘new MacBook air’ is just a cheaper MacBook...
Could be. I don't think the "Air" moniker makes sense in the current MB, MBP, iPad, iPad Pro configuration.

Recall Shiller got on stage in 2016 and said the 2 port MBP would be something for Apple's MB Air customers, so who knows what they'll name it? Whatever it is, it seems set to fit in the MB Air price category.

Additionally, there were a lot of rumors leading up to October 2016 Apple was updating the MacBook Air and would be adding a couple USB-C ports. I recall people scratching their heads..."why does Apple want to update the Air again?" Turns out Apple did release something for MB Air customers with USB-C ports---they just called it the MacBook Pro.

The supply chain rumors and Gurman rumors seem to do well with form factor and some features; however, they have not been great at names. Remember "iPhone Math?" Yeah, that was just an iPhone Plus/+ with the addition symbol translated as "Math."

Don't pay attention to the names--it's hopeless. Just watch price points and features.

I agree. I'd be fine with one priced closer to $1500 if the specs were in line. And it better not be all USB-C ports.

have you tried switching to Linux? would be perfect for your needs.

If they just give the mini quad core processors and user accessible storage and ram I'd be ok with that.

Very good news, it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming month. Would certainly be exciting to see how Apple will revamp the new MacBook Air. Hope all the USB ports stay with a new USB C and also the older keyboard.

I would be okay with it if Apple lowered the price every year accordingly.
LOL. That's not how Apple sells products.

Welcome to Planet Earth.

Tablets are being used most often at home for relaxation.

That's the conclusion drawn from the research data referenced in this Adweek article from 2015. Tablets are used outside of the home less than 15% of the time. Given the "stay at home" role, the portability aspect of an iPad has little value. Apple reversed course with the iPad 2017 and 2018 for good reason.
Portability matters even if you use it exclusively in your home. The lighter the iPad, the easier and more comfortable it is to hold upright.

Before everyone gets excited about a Pro mini, just think of the limitations in terms of GPUs and poor cooling. There’s no way it could be a fully fledged pro device

Interested in what a pro mac mini would look like. I really do hope this includes an iMac though!
