For most people "hey siri" works perfectly fine - disabling devices that shouldn't be listening as soon as they are invoked. For edge cases like yours dumbing down the technology is not the answer - they should focus on improving detection over an inane solution like this - all of their competitors manage perfectly fine.

Additionally, voice detection for "hey siri" is handled on-device (on-chip) and adding more names for it to respond to will likely take even longer than just fixing the problem in the first place.

Glad it works perfectly fine for you. Hopefully we all can become you.

Sorry for being inane- just contributing an idea that could quickly work for those people who are not you, rather than insulting them for not having the perfect experience that you do and/or just putting up with the frustrations until Apple might get around to “the future.”

I just wonder if it was sweat or water in the Airpods that caused them to short out and almost burn that guy last week.

I am AFRAID to use my Airpods while working out because I SWEAT! I sweat A LOT! I don't want to suffer a burn, or smell the smoke and acrid odors as my $150 amazing Airpods burn through the carpet in my home gym. Nice...

And my wife asked me why I don't use them as much anymore. Hmm...
I tell you what. Last summer I forgot my AirPods in their case in my swimsuit’s pocket. I swam for 30 minutes in the sea and realized that they were with me when I got out of the water. I rinsed them in the shower tried to get rid of the salty water as much as possible. I sucked the water out of the AirPods with my mouth and let them dry in the sun. I shook the charging case as much as I could to expel the water and let it dry for overnight. Next day, to my utter surprise, both of the AirPods were working without a single problem. However, the charging case did not survive the ordeal and it was dead as a doorknob.

I used my wife’s charging case and it worked to charge my earpieces. Both of the earpieces survived without a problem but the case never came back to life. So, I ended up buying a replacement charging case. So far my AirPods still work without a single trace of the ordeal they went through.

I think the earpieces are waterproof but the case is not. So, go ahead and use them while working out without a fear. Your sweat will never match a 30 minutes swim in the sea.

As a swimmer I would love an AirPods waterproof so I can use on my workouts. But that to happen. Apple would have to change the current design and make it more like the Bragi models shape that fits inside of your ear and no stem. So that basically means it won't happen. :(

Most of those models are very different from each other. And the earphones didn't change all that often.

This article is talking about airpods. Then airpods that are identical except hey siri. Then airpods that are identical except waterproof. All on a nice 1 year cycle. It takes Apple a whole year to add a minor software feature but they can't waterproof it yet. Then another whole year just to add waterproofing.

It's not about upgrading hardware with new tech. It's about the minimal possible change so they can pretend there's a new model. It's a much bigger investment in marketing than in the actual tech. Read the post right above mine, there's a lot they could do with Airpods. But it's all about marketing buzz and always a "new" version.
Uh... Just because they're new doesn't mean you have to buy them...

If the update is important to me, I'll buy it. If I wait 5 years, I'll enjoy the benefits of the 5 incremental updates in between.

The world keeps moving forward, I never understand why people want to freeze it in time or complain about updates they don't personally care about. They're selling millions of these things, it's reasonable to keep making incremental improvements.

I can't wear 'em. Or rather, I can wear one in the right ear, but the left ear canal is just a different size. I never got one to stay more than 3 minutes in the left ear.

The sound quality should be the first upgrade. It’s Abismal. It the weakest link in an outstanding product.
That’s why I haven’t bought a pair. Sure they’re innovative and convenient, but if sound quality is mediocre why would I use them? Especially at that price, I expect better than stock earbud sound.

They have to know it’s become the butt of a lot of jokes at this point.

The media and customer criticisms of Siri on HomePod were so loud this time, I think Apple has no choice but to address it, or it will begin to erode social perception. They can’t push major products with a Siri focus, where Siri negatively impacts customer experience, without doing something about it.

It’s coming.

This is what the future should be, not every device having a different name.

It’s like having Jarvis, where one wants Jarvis to answer them wherever they are. Not having an army of digital assistants. The latter is actually a poor user experience.

I sure hope so. Siri is becoming an embarrassment for Apple.

I think my biggest wanted feature would be auto-switching between devices rather than having to go into Control Centre each time I jump from my iPhone to my iPad. It's admittedly a minor annoyance but it would be a big time saver for me.

Or if auto switch is too difficult, be able to tell Siri, “Connect to my [iphone/iPad/MacBook/Apple tv].”

I would not buy them either, there are many Bluetooth headsets that sound better. It’s is amazing to me that they sell so well when the very first expectation at their price point is that they should sound better than the free ones included with the iPhone. I heard them when I did buy them and I returned them the same day. I have an old pair of amazon beaters that were $29 that had better audio quality. At that time I went with Bose soundsports that were slightly lower priced and had a small wire. Going to upgrade to soundsports without the wire which has a similar charging case system.

I love the AirPods and can't for future updates to them, but Apple come on, can we prioritize that overdue power mat thing that I just drop my devices on and they charge?

Is water damage an issue for the current gen? From my experience what I have seen on YouTube, they are already very splash resistant. Even though it is not listed on the spec sheet. Unless they warranty water damage this won’t matter.
[doublepost=1519327343][/doublepost]I dropped one of my AirPods into our swimming pool last month. Took me a few minutes to get it out. I dried it for a few hours and it has worked fine ever since

How would the Autoswitch work? On my bedside I have my phone and both of my iPads in close proximity. How would the AirPods know which device to connect to? Obviously they connect to the device they connected the last time. I have no choice but to go through the setup menu of the device I wish to use and connect manually. It only takes a few seconds, no big deal.

couldn't the "hey, siri" part be added via a software update?.. or is this going to be one of those live photo things again?..
I think I read somewhere that Apple's M9 chip works with very low power on standby and just listens for Hey Siri. A circuit like that would be needed in the low energy AirPods so it could listen while barely impacting battery life. I guess it would need noise cancellation too, to listen for Siri while playing music.

How about a way to prioritise what device answers. Currently my watch answers and phone answers at the same time. I wanna buy a HomePod but will just add confusion on which Siri Im talking to.

With my iPhone, iPad and HomePod already listening for Hey Siri... this is going to cause a bit of a mess, me thinks lol.

“Hey Siri” made sense when it only existed on one or two devices. Now with 5+ Hey Siri capable devices around me, I really need a way to specify a device. Instead of general “Hey Siri”, a very simple fix would be to be able to say, “Hey Phone” or “Hey HomePod”. Perhaps I could even give my devices custom names, which would help avoid invoking other people’s devices.

No matter what they do to improve the ear buds it still doesn’t change the fact they are uncomfortable not all ear canals are the same that’s why other manufacturers offer different rubberized ear pieces. Sorry they are uncomfortable bottom line.

What I'd really like are some soft silicone tipped AirPods. That hard plastic is just too uncomfortable for me. :(
What I'd really like to see are AirPods that were designed to work with custom-molded earpieces. They wouldn't fit in the dental-floss-sized charging case, without some redesign work, but it's hard to go back to normal earphones after experiencing custom-molded earpieces, which are unbelievably comfortable, block out lots of external noise (without having to be jammed into your brain like the silicone tips on in-ear-monitors), and fit very securely - with no cord tugging on them, you'd never have to worry about one falling out.

True, if they want to get AirPods into more people’s ears, then that’s one thing they’ll be forced to address.

Agreed the hard plastic is irritating and uncomfortable and depending on your ear canal size some might have to push the hard plastic buds in further to get a good fit
