I do not think anyone is denying this. Many are skeptical about the usefulness of a watch to solve the problem.

BTW, there is another related article in the news today: Apple hopes the Apple Watch can help patients recover faster from knee and hip replacements

I wish the watch could cure all these diseases the likelihood however is that it won't help with any of them.

Well we won’t know unless they study them, which Apple is thankfully making it easy to do with the donation.

Also as somebody who suffered from an eating disorder (anorexia) it’s very unlikely that any one thing can “solve/cure” it. It’s more about body image and accepting yourself, I can certainly see how an Apple Watch could help people be confident in a acceptable weight if they can see that they are actually healthy.

It’s not like they’re marketing it as a cure for EDs, they’re donating to a specific study, headed by people who have an idea that it could provide data that could be helpful in the long run. What’s so outlandish about that?

“People who purge or engage in excessive bouts of exercise following the binge”

A lot of guys that go to my gym fit into that description, at least the “excessive exercising exercise” part...

I know a guy who will eat at Cheesecake Factory and literally will run for 10 miles afterwards. I thought for sure he would eventually stop doing this (most people won't keep the commitment up after a while) but he's done this for several years now and kept the weight off (he used to be really heavy, he's almost gaunt now I'd say). Not necessarily healthy, but it's better I suppose than not exercising at all.

The watch can keep people in check "it's time to stand, your rings are usually further along at this time" but some people have serious problems. This can only be a good thing.

I am signed up for a study that is looking to correlate the data from the Apple Watch with data collected by your doctor and looking to understand the relationship between diseases and quality of life. My role will be to wear an apple watch daily and take my blood pressure twice a day for 45 days. Then blood pressure monthly and surveys quarterly for up to 3 years. I get to keep the watch and the blood pressure cuff. I haven't gotten the watch yet. My appointment is in November. They did ask if I wanted the 38mm or the 42mm watch. We will see what I get.

That’s not how it works.

Therapy does work very well for many disorders.

There's something wrong with the photo in this article. Call it OCD if you like, but there's no way that your wrist would be to the left hand side of the image with the watch showing in that orientation - it just wouldn't work?! I know it's a mock up and I know I'm being unbelievably anal about this but just looking at that picture is making me twitch violently.

TAKE IT AWAY. TAKE IT AWAY!

They should give you a watch and perform a study on it.:D

You can specify which arm you use and where the digital crown is. I technically wear my watch backwards (upside down) on my left arm, but I find I don't activate Siri accidentally nearly as often as I had been. If I moved my watch from my left arm to my right with the "standard" orientation, it would look exactly like the photo.

In addition to Binge I’d suggest some heavy buzzing when detecting at any MacDonalds/Burgerking/.... geo-location for more than a minute

Excellent!

Apple is teamed up with the Stanford University Hospital in the Stanford Heart Study. This is huge research project targeting wireless heart monitoring along with a leader in caridac wireless monitoring, BioTelemetry. BioTelemetry is also in the final stages of perfecting wireless glucose monitoring. Talk about potential here, especially for the Apple watch.

Exciting times are ahead for wirelsss medical technology & consumer products. Go Apple!

Yep, you're absolutely right. I hadn't considered that someone would set the orientation to left but wear it on their right wrist. For a mock up I still think they probably made a mistake, but I'll get my coat and shuffle off stage left... or perhaps stage right facing left. ;)

These are clinical studies to collect information about medical conditions, that's all. The Watch isn't administering any treatment or making claims about curing these conditions. One day somebody might design treatment based on the information collected or there may be nothing useful to work on. That's the way clinical studies go.

Imagine if the AW was ever used for aversion therapy. Say, think or do something stupid and you get a tazer like shock.

Jeez is that you in your profile picture? Wow.

Since this thread is somewhat health oriented, I’m Actually in prep phase right now for bodybuilding, which I started back in July. Lifting is second nature to me, I love every second of it. I train five days a week, sometimes six Pending my schedule.

I wonder what made Apple choose this specific disorder. Pretty cool though.

I don’t know anyone personally that struggles with any type of eating disorder, but it is a very serious thing, for both male and female. And I think this is probably one of those undiscovered type of disorders that many struggle with that are not exactly apparent when you first encounter someone. I Think Apple stepping in this direction really shows you it’s not about the Apple Watch anymore, it’s about monitoring our daily lifestyle to make us a better self through the fitness tracking, EKG, heart rate monitoring, and now something along these internal studies with Eating disorders.

I honestly think the Apple Watch is the one product that has the potential to be a massive breakthrough in the future for Apple, where will supersede the iPhone. It’s not here yet, but 5/6 years, we all will reflect back on the first GEN watch and realize how this was the first step.

Very well said. Looking good man. Keep it up!

Very clever Apple! Give away 1,000 Apple Watches... doesn't Apple Watch needs iPhone to work? ;)

That would be clever. Maybe there are 2000 people in the study, and since some 50% of Americans seem to have iPhones, they can give 1000 Watches to the iPhone users. The other 1000 have to have an EKG unit strapped around their waist, with electrodes going all over the place. So, they look at their Samsungs and say, "never again".
