Humans have the mental and physical ability to escape. It's the wildlife, the poor animals.

Absolutely breaks my heart. 😢😢😢😢
I hope in Australia the people have been able to escape. In some of the California fires, many people died while trying to flee. I saw footage filmed from inside of a car of one very narrow harrowing escape. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

I similarly can’t believe all the fires on the maps I’m seeing for Australia. I share your heartbreak. The poor koalas in particular have made the news for really horrific reasons. In the USA, as far as I know, we don’t really have an animal quite like that, that is so arboreal that all of its instincts would keep it in trees where death is certain. Anything I could think of like raccoons and squirrels have at least a small chance of fleeing. But we still lost plenty of them, too.

Alright I'll be that guy before that guy walks into this thread. That incompetent, dastardly Tim Cook running around wasting time and money on social issues again. He should be in the lab redesigning a new mini.
TBH, it wouldn’t hurt to offer a smaller iPad that didn’t look so outdated with huge bezels. My mini 4 is getting slower and I really don’t want to upgrade to a faster, but identical mini which could have been even smaller with a redesigned body and the same display size (or the same body size with a 9” display). As for Australia, I wish them plenty of rain to fall soon to put out these stubborn wildfires. I’ve never been down under and hope to visit someday.

You might want to change this into a Politics/Religion post... the fires are a very contentious issue here due to a government who can't even say "climate change". A government who say we are world leaders for in home salar panels uptake and then reduce subsidies that encourage more uptake (because then we would not need as many coal powered power stations).

Yes we've had a shocking drought. We've also sold off water to overseas interests and put washing coal ahead of growing food and drinking water for animals.

Our governments would not listen to fire chiefs who called this out months ago. Couldnt find time to talk to them. Then they cut funding for Rural Fire Services. The hard working volunteers had to crowd fund breathing masks! Yet our PM says he has been involved for months doing his best. (That was after he went missing for a few days holiday without telling anyone).

We've also rain forests that never burn go up in flames. They are saying up to 500,000,000 animals have been killed too. The ones who survive fire will have no food.

And this is just the start of a predicted extra hot and dry Summer. One can only wonder what the next few months will bring ;(

When our PM decided to avoid the mess by taking a "holiday" was the biggest disaster on my list.

The only way Australia ever gets a mention by Apple is when a disaster strikes.. Otherwise, we are "off the map'

Literally. If it wasn't for iFixit, we wouldn't even get a mention.

I donated on behalf of my work team to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital
they have a project to build up a population, together with developing some habitat
they can’t do it alone - the vulnerability of this population is very starkly revealed in recent events

What exactly is your complaint? You don’t seem particularly upset with the donation to the firefighters, but want Australia to be “mentioned” more often? Is that a complaint about Macrumors or Apple?

The earlier map another user posted of the area around Sydney really doesn't show the full scale of the fires in Australia. I'll attach the current fire maps for "just" the east coast of Australia and a photo from where I was yesterday after the fire passed through. The firefront is just so huge I couldn't imagine the resources we would need to put them out all at once.

Unfortunately each state uses a different website for reporting their fires.

The day before I landed in Sydney four years ago, the western side had a high of 114 degrees Fahrenheit. They were having 'fire storms' elsewhere as well. I was concerned that it would be horrendously hot, but the temperature dropped to the 80's while I was there. It stayed rather seasonal too for the weeks after. I have traveled in the Caribbean and experienced 100+ degree temps. I can't imagine it happening to such an extent as there. And the largest export, I was told, besides trees and lumber, is coal. Irony on tragedy I suppose...

I overheard a news video playing where, well, and the sound the poor poor creature made. I'm welling up now just thinking about it. I just hope brave and clever people out there can minimise the fires and seek to prevent them in future, such as clearing break zones or something.

Meanwhile they totally ignore San Francisco.
I wonder why they have an agenda?

The disaster created in SF was intentional and by design. Joking aside I thought Apple was throwing something like $2 billion there for housing.

While Apple may not be the most innovative company under Tim Cook, they have become a better company in general.

The negativity in this thread is truly depressing...

I’m surprised there is not more discussion on this here. It’s an absolute disaster with now a billion wild life dead and no end to the fires stopping. We had hundreds of millions donated to rebuild a cathedral in Paris last year yet the super rich appear to be ignoring a much more devastating fire.

I hope Australians realise they are constantly in our thoughts.
