In a social media post today, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple will be making a donation of an undisclosed amount to Hurricane Helene relief efforts.

"We're thinking of all those facing the catastrophic aftermath of Hurricane Helene," said Cook. "Apple will be making a donation to help with relief efforts on the ground."

Hurricane Helene made landfall at Florida's Big Bend on late Thursday, before carrying on through several southeastern U.S. states such as Georgia and North Carolina, resulting in catastrophic damage and reportedly more than 100 deaths.

Apple has donated to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief efforts in the past.

It's crazy how many towns have been destroyed and how bad the impact of this has been. The response so far has been really pathetic from the government and companies compared to other prior disasters. Hopefully bigger players like apple chipping in gives a bit more notice to the catastrophe.

I suspect this will be a combination of a corporate grant in the hundreds of millions of dollars (maybe more), along with a 2 for 1 matching of Apple employee donations.

There’s other sources to give money to help that are better with their money

a) It's impossible to know what the government's response is because news organizations aren't covering the destruction like they would if it were somewhere more accessible. Basically nobody can get into or out of the worst-hit areas right now. In many cases literally the only way in or out is on foot or by helicopter. The people responding are way too busy to post crap on social media.

b) With our federal system, FEMA and the feds can basically only provide assistance to state authorities, who are mostly providing assistance to local authorities. Federal support is ramping up as quickly as it can and supporting the areas that can actually be helped the most right now. It's not just a question of who needs help the most. Logistics are a real thing, and they need to get things to where they can do the most good, and the "where" is sometimes counterintuitive to laypeople like you and me.

c) The biggest role of FEMA and other federal agencies is going to be in the next weeks, months, and years, not in the immediate aftermath. It's going to be rebuilding roads and bridges. Those efforts won't be apparent for quite a while because they aren't overnight projects.

Tax deductible of course.
Routine response to this sort of thing. Always silly. How often do you give someone $100 in order to save $21 that you owe to someone else? Donations like this are a net outflow of $79 for every $100 donated in the best case for them.

Cook's post was specifically referring to a donation regarding Hurricane Helene. When has Apple given anything even close to "hundreds of millions of dollars" for a specific natural disaster relief effort?

With Apple being a global company, wish they'd do these types of things for say Bangladesh for example
Nepal is experiencing devastating flooding. Nigeria did too (affected agriculture significantly.) Extensive wildfires in South America.

All of these disasters are adding up.

Many tech-bros think they are immune, hiding away in the richest parts of the globe. Yet disasters will force global-wide rethinking that will surely impact all aspects of life, including the high-tech sectors.

Why don’t they say the amount of money they’re donating? Apple has billions and billions on the bank, I assume people from Florida have spent several billions on Apple throughout the years. So Timmy is spending $ 5,- and use those free advertising??? Come on Apple be transparent and honest!

Imagine the whine-fest if Apple disclosed a very large amount. It would be dismissed as a PR stunt by the perpetually-unhappy-ragging-on-Apple crowd here.

It amounts to a damned if you do, damned if you don't, based on years of history.

Much better to stay quiet, imo. No need to brag. Apple doesn't need to.

Staying quiet by tweeting it from the CEO's twitter account to 14.5 million followers.

It has nothing to do with bragging but more with transparency and honest business practices.

Are you suggesting Apple (more like *saying* since you clearly don't trust Apple) might not be engaging in honest business practices by donating a lot of money for disaster relief helping cities and people after going through a major hurricane?

Please elaborate.
