“the GF and I are talking about not upgrading until the holidays.”
Talk about a rollercoaster…

But in all seriousness. Why would you need to upgrade? I had the iPhone 3S, 4, 6S and 11. Probably upgrading again when the 15 or 16 arrives. Same with my Macs: still running the 2014 MacBook Pro, and about to upgrade to the M1X.

When you upgrade only once in while, the difference is amazing. It’s like Christmas. Upgrading each year feels like a waste of money. But to each his own. Also: gotta make the stock owners happy.

Don’t know if bugs are more prevalent now. Each OS becomes more complex and bloated though.

My theory is that Apple tried to get Face ID working with masks, but gave up on it, but in the process it messed up unlock with Apple Watch.
There was a rumor a month or so back that was indeed what they were doing. Not sure if that is related to this, but it's a fair assumption.

Now I get that this software is more complicated these days and I get it takes more to get it right. Nevertheless.....there was a time not too long ago when I HAD to have the latest iPhone on launch day. There was also a time not too long ago when the newest iOS was released, pretty much in full, a few days before the new iPhones were released.

Now....it's just different. More and more bugs, more and more features get delayed, and my drive to upgrade just isn't as strong as it once was. My 11PM still works like a champ, and, to be honest, the Pixel 4a takes such amazing photos that now the GF and I are talking about not upgrading until the holidays.

Again, I know I'm being Captain Obvious here and this is just me and my use case, I just think it's wise to wait until this is all ironed out.

As many have said, perhaps switching to every other year release cycles for iOS might not be the worst idea.
lol you had me until you said holidays.

I bet if you type the phrase "will be fixed in an upcoming update" into Apple's new Translate feature it will come back as "you are wearing it wrong"!

Apple has become a joke with their total lack of programming skills. If you are an unemployed software developer who can't find a company willing to hire you because you suck at it, then apply at Apple, they will hire you.
Okay buy an Android phone then and enjoy one complimentary software update.

This one is broken for me too. The weird thing to me is, while I love the iOS 15 update, I don't really use too many features, certainly not very many "advanced" features. Yet, I've encountered 5-6 bugs since upgrading. Because I don't really use my phone for too much, I used to never encounter bugs. But now 5-6 in one week including this.

And on my iPad, there is now widget support, but my first Home Screen page has to be filled up with widgets or icons or it will take as many icons and widgets from the second page to fill up the first page. Rearranging icons on both iOS and iPad os is sometimes a nightmare because the icon will jump back to the previous page, sometimes shifting icons over to the next page and breaking your arrangement of icons.

Like, it was one thing when in MacOS I don't bother to use Launchpad because it is a nuisance (just try to arrange the icons sometime), but now it is getting to the point where it is hard to arrange the Home Screen. Don't get me wrong, I love the Home Screen on iOS and iPad. But good grief, it is so difficult to arrange things sometimes and tedious to put things back in place after you move one millimeter too much to an edge.

Love watch unlock with masks - had been working great on my 12 Pro Max.

My only issue: why doesn’t it work for unlocking _apps_ too? If I go into the office (which I don’t do much) I have to wear a mask… which is fine other than the huge inconvenience of 1Password not opening automatically on my phone…

Is there a setting for this I missed somewhere?

This isn't just with Apple. It is just the Agile software development these days. I was the same with you. But like I said, its not just Apple. I am no longer looking forward to the newest Windows feature updates or Windows 11. Or newest Visual Studio. Or newest Adobe programs. I have been through bad upgrades after bad upgrades after bad upgrades long enough where I no longer look forward to always being on the latest.

Ah, some more of that amazing "work from home" they claimed to have as the reason for allowing them to continue to work from home showing its face again. Yikes.
Are you saying working from home is the cause for this? Because Apple (and Microsoft and Adobe and many others) have been suffering for years lately on these regular updates.

Didn’t they have a spare iPhone and Apple Watch to test this? I wonder why do they have a couple of months for “beta testing” and this happens

Not everyone has the issue. Not all bugs show up in small scale testing. Sometimes bugs show themselves only after millions of people start utilizing a new product. Unless you know something I don’t know and millions of users were able to test the 13 for the past 5 months?

Spent the better part of yesterday morning trying to solve this issue with my new iPhone 13. Frustrating, but glad to see a fix is on the way.

As a software developer, I don’t really understand how this bug wasn’t caught. It affects everyone, no? I can understand bugs that get through that affect a percentage of the user base — but how was this not caught? Certainly there wasn’t a last minute untested change that they just lobbed out the day before. This is odd to me. The widget issue too… but I don’t think that affected everyone.

It only affects people who are upgrading from an old phone to a new phone. And it’s not clear whether that includes all such people or only a lot of us. For whatever reason, they missed whatever this scenario is.

There are many users on the forums without this problem, and it is widely known that the ones affected are much more likely to report.

I'm not arguing they haven't been suffering, but Apple seems to have gotten worse lately with this (Microsoft and Adobe have been terrible in this regard for a long time).
