wow that's a major privacy issue.. later this week, sure no urgency
Later this week can be as soon as tomorrow. That aside, there being an urgency doesn't mean that basic reality of an issue needing to be investigated, a proper fix to be designed, then developed, then tested, then prepared for release, etc. needing some time.

What is the reason for rumor sites posting step by step instructions on how to replicate this bug? An obscure bug that the majority of iOS users would never have heard about or encountered is now all over the internet/news. My Twitter feed is full of people explaining how to disable FaceTime. Good grief. And honest to god if this bug was as serious as the Marco Arments of the world want us to believe there would be a fix before later this week. Remember the software update that killed people’s cellular connectivity? That was a major bug. And it was fixed immediately.

Why was this not in the testing suite? These basic issues should be under the basic regression test case run, and there's no excuse otherwise.

Tim, give me a call. I'd be right pissed about now.
Is this really basic? Just because the steps might not be that involved doesn't necessarily make the overall scenario basic.

Testing before release? .. apple?
Yeah, it's not like they have complex OSs and software that work just fine for most people most of the time. It's just magically that way on its own.

not like they have enough resources to test products

How is adding yourself to a call you’re already on part of any “basic” testing? What other “basic” scenarios would you test?

If it's a screen Flickr, perhaps.
Privacy is a duty of care really, a little more could be at risk here.
Of course, but the reality remains that perfection, especially when it comes to something complex, doesn't really exist.

I can't get this to work. It won't let me add myself to the call. The add person is greyed out when adding my phone number.

And here comes “FaceTime-gate” - nahhh , just doesn’t roll of the tongue the right way

Facegate maybe? It even has clever connotations.

Because Tim Cook personally coded the functionality that gave rise to this bug?

Yepp. He gave rise to Craig without giving him QA supervision when it became clear that Craig gave rise to the dev organization that produced one quality blunder after another recently. And none of those two seemed concerned enough about how to prevent these things.

It’s not that this tendency hasn’t been discussed over and over during the last few years. If this multi-level(!) software bug would not match the pattern so well, it would be as bad, but it might just not exist if the former failures would have been met and recognized with a bit more humility and visible action instead of downplaying the issues at hand. Fixing just does not replace prevention and a kind of anal attitude towards the development process might be a key quailty that that leader club lacks right now.

It’s not that Apple wouldn’t have the money to build a better QA into their system. To me it seems that that current leader club just doesn’t like to be supervised but that supervision and checks is something that you need to put in place if you see things slip past your control on a regular basis.

After all, Apple owes the customer, Tim owes Apple, Craig owes Apple and Tim. So yes, Tim’s right in the middle and has to act.

Sorry, not an easy problem-free job.

I just tested this on an two iPhones running iOS 12.1.1 and iOS 12.1.2. This bug worked on them. Video was viewable even though the other person silenced the call (hit the side button). This is crazy!
