I just wrote up the result section for someone’s research and being able to do 2/3rd screen spss, and 1/3rd word + a pdf cut at least a day or two off my time working. Until I moved to ultra wide I didn’t realize how much time was spent just scrolling through hundreds of variables on my 16:9 display. Two monitors is better than one, but one ultra wide is better than two standard
You're right and I will move to ultrawide as soon as I get one I can drive with a reasonable graphics card and that covers the same area as my 3*32" 4K at this moment. Vertical resolution below 2160 isn't acceptable for me. And yes, I do use up all of that on a daily basis so I'm not interested in anything lower res.

I have the exact same AOC monitor as you and ever since big sur, I am no longer able to run it at 144hz. Stuck at 60hz
I can only run it at 60 Hz in Big Sur with my Intel 2014 Mac mini, but that was also true with Catalina.

When I hook up the AOC to my M1 MBP (using TB to DP cable) I can run it at 144 Hz, but I have to choose scaled and then choose the 3440 x 1440 option. When I do that (Scaled, 3440 x 1440) then the drop down for frequency options can be changed.

I am on Big Sur 11.1 for the M1 MBP, if that helps.

Although I have connected the AOC ultra wide to the M1 MBP with an HDMI cable, I did not try to change the frequency so I do not know if I can get over 60 Hz using HDMI.

Well it's clear this transition to ARM causes this bumps along the way.
To be fair I am already impressed with what apple was able to achieve so far.
Considering the situation, macOS on ARM is pretty well sorted; it's also lovely to see app developers are reacting quite quickly into updating the apps.
Which cable fixed it for you? I have an M1 Mac mini & Samsung 49” and can’t get 5120x1440 at any refresh rate...

Try switchres x. There is a free trial. It works.
Thanks, indeed it does now but only after I downgraded the monitor's DP version from 1.4 to 1.2. With DP1.2 enabled the C49RG9x is finally detected correctly by my Mac mini M1 after sleep / shutdown etc. and with the SwitchResX daemon enabled drops straight into 5120x1440 @ 120Hz - woot! DP1.2 was actually the key

I like many have resulted to using SwitchResX. For newbies, i made a video to talk you through it.
Hope it helps!

Any updates on this? I tried the Ventura dev with my MacBook M1 Air and LG 34WK95U, no luck. I'll probably have to sell it and hope for a refurb M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Only other option would be if we find out Apple didn't place this stupid arbitrary limit on the new M2 processors — which we should know within a matter of days.

M2 is still limited to just one external display...

I use a 5120x1440 240hz monitor on my MacBook Air m1, works great no issues yet, sadly for the MacBook it can only push up to 120hz at that resolution, fly pc can handle it better

I din't need more than one, I'm already running 5K2K with my Air extended display — more than enough real estate for me. I just want to know if Apple will limit scaled HiDPI resolutions instead of letting me run 4454x1879 instead of nearly-illegible 5120x2160. The largest HiDPI option the M1 Air has is a ridiculous 3072x1296 — that's a Fisher-Price baby toy.

It looks like from specs that all M1 limits are still the same on the M2. Unless it's a macOS thing it's likely still a limit.

At the same time, my Studio Ultra is currently connected to four monitors. I suspect the low end chips will always be display limited, but the higher end ones of the same family will be less so. It will be fun to see what they do with the Mac Pro. In all honesty, I can't see how they could add PCIe expandability without slowing the entire system down.

And it's ridiculous and arbitrary. My M1 Air drives native 5880x2160 like it's nothing, but it can't do HiDPI? I can do it with BetterDummy (highly recommended, along with SwitchResX) but dummies add some complications to my setup that make it not ideal for use with Adobe design apps.

In a new support document, Apple has acknowledged that when an ultrawide or super-ultrawide external display is connected to a Mac with the M1 chip, some resolutions supported by the display may not be available currently.

Apple says it is aware of this issue and has a solution planned for a future macOS update. Apple did not specify exactly when a fix will be available, but the first beta of macOS 11.2 was seeded last week, so that is one possibility.

To see additional resolutions for your external display, click on the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac, open System Preferences, click Displays, and press and hold the Option key while you click "Scaled."

There is a running thread about this issue in the MacRumors forums.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

I have found that manually switching from the Displayport-1.2 to the Displayport-1.4 in the menu of the Display protocol completely and reliably fixed my never-ending issues with the M1-MBP on an LG widescreen (5K-2K). So to me, it seems less of an M1-issue than an automatic protocol switching issue. And yes, I think Apple should give is the option to manually switch, IF there is anything MacOS can do to adjust the protocol. If not, more people need to test this solution and start blaming the right people ;)

LG 49” Ultra wide 49GR85DC-B

Just returned my MacBook 16” M4 Pro back to Sky under the cooling off period. Was not happy with the blurry text at 5120x1440 resolution with no option for hiDPI.

Also I did not like the lousy cheap feeling keyboard.
