I bet we see Steve come out to introduce this. MobileMe is becoming Apple's own long due Facebook competitor. This is potentially huge for Apple.

With an installed base of over 160 million iOS devices, they're going to get a real nice head start. Facebook is at 300 million.

If Apple makes Me.com a free service for every iOS user, then they're not only going to instantly compete at the level of Facebook but they're going to totally murder BBM. Everybody's going to want an iPhone so that they can become a member of Apple's social network.

I expect Apple to re-brand it to simply me.com. I mean, what is Facebook all about? It's your "Me" online. That's the best social network URL right there.

Wow...you certainly do live in the cloud...

Face it. Me.com will continue to be full of sucks features which Apple think are magical (e.g sharing photos with friends).

+1 A lot of this new geolocation tagging freaks me out. I can't believe people also tag their houses. Seems like an invite for someone to rob them when they check into McDonald's. :p

Only people that you have on your friends list see it and not the whole world.. If you have people on your friends list that you do not know then that is your fault.. Like some of us we only have people that we know in the REAL WORLD on our friends lists.. So if your friends are going to rob you when you are not home then I think it is time for new friends..

P.S. I am in my mid 30's...

The only thing about MobileMe that interests me in the least is the online file storage. And DropBox gives you more storage for less money. So, yeah, the only thing that would make me care about this is if MobileMe were to become free.

I hope you can turn this off.
I don't need people seeing where I am or when I'm not at home.

I'd prefer expanded file sharing services, location-aware productivity apps and streaming functionality - but I don't need to auto-post on Facebook every time I step out of the house!

Agreed. Fix the current service we pay for.

I am told it is a generation thing.

Being older, I value my privacy and consider all personal info released dangerous and nobody's business.

Also, I do not need additional work to keep updating anything, or reading what somebody wrote on a wall etc.
My personal viewpoints are also not of interest to most people, nor is what music I listen to. So, for me Ping is dead!

The kids of today have no clue what a malicious person could put together from the info they release on their facebook pages.

Looks like good stuff for a horror movie:)

Already personnel managers look up how "stable" a person is , friends, pictures etc.

Geotagging is the worst and comes close to big brother watching you.

Maybe Apple can copy Twitter, call it Spitter like we spit out Apple pits.

So, we can all spit what we are doing.

Again. Agreed- why does the younger generation need to advertise their every move?

I don't care about all that social network garbage ... I want dropbox like features!

Yep. Fix the iDisk please.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I could care less about the social stuff

Neither do I. Scares me actually.

I agree.

When I was young I did not want everyone to know where or what I was doing, now the kids of today want to blab it all over the damn world!

LAME!

Why is this? I don't think people realize the inherent danger of this. Once on the Internet- forever on the Internet. Nothing can be removed.

Sounds horrible. This is the kind of thing I am trying to get away from and avoid at every opportunity.

Me 2

If Apple could pull off something better then http://www.episodic.com/ or Flumotion WebTV and Flumotion Streaming then their video streaming service will explode!

Apple could introduce a solution built around a new Xserve bundled with Final Cut Server for cataloging and publishing videos to the new service. Final Cut Server could also publish to local H264 streaming servers for intranet streaming as well with a Video On Demand web front end.

There's a huge market in education for such a service. Think of a more advanced version of Ensemble Video that ties into the production workflow as well. Publishing images would be great to compete against lackluster solutions like Extensis NetPublish

I really think less of people when we've just had a lovely meal and been out drinking, and then they ask "are you on facebook?". Don't people get to know each other any more? Does everyone just socially-link within about 30 minutes of knowing each other and then track each other's moves?

I would like to hear your suggestion then, for my world-wide growing ministry...

Not wishing to sound offensive, but my suggestion would be to stop. I really don't think mankind needs any more religions; the ones currently in circulation cause enough problems.

Observed a group of college students meeting at a restaurant together for dinner. About 12 plus students.
NONE!!! talked to each other regularly, but they were all texting with somebody else or actually on their cells.

Even when the food finally came to the table, only a few started talking to each other.

Why even meet?

My daughter explained to me that I was too old to understand.

As I posted before: George Carlin, brilliant assessment about religion on youtube with MILLIONS of views.

Just brilliant thinking and IMO on the money!

Ummmm

How about syncing between devices that works? Or perhaps improved syncing with Windows OS Apps, such as iDisk and iWeb access? Or offering phone support for MobileMe issues instead of typing endlessly to tech via online chat?

I don't want everyone knowing exactly where I am at all hours of the day. Improved support and quality for the features already offered as well as improved iDisk speed and access seem to be the major complaints from .Mac/MobileMe users, not "stalking".

Well stated! iDevices and social networking sites are creating a generation of kids/people who are socially inept and rely on third party services/devices to communicate. This also creates a world of unrealistic expectations as people create their own persona's, the person they WANT to be and not who they are, and the anonymity of the internet has destroyed common courtesy between people. There isn't a thread on this site that doesn't have at least a few dozen personal insults. If you wouldn't talk to a complete stranger in person as such, why would you do it online?

I agree. I'm one of those few kids you see that isn't on Facebook or the like. Forums are the most "social networking" I do. Kids these days...

Among the many services Apple is working on are:
- A live video-streaming service like Ustream
- A location-based check-in system like Gowalla or Foursquare
- A geo-tagging system codenamed "Tokens" that tags real-world locations, like Facebook Places on steroids.

- Ustream is FREE
- Gowalla and Fourscquare are FREE
- Facebook Places is FREE

Last time I checked, MobileMe was $99 per year. Even Mac customers don't get that for free!!

I really don't see anything Apple offers here taking off in any way, shape or form. Even at free, all of these services are already done by companies that do the web better than Apple. Apple has never done the web well. Never. Great hardware, great OS's, but their web services have always sucked.

I could have told you this last year. Oh wait, I did…

Paid MobileMe seems so out of step with all the other free online services out there. Hard to understand why Apple clings to this as a source of revenue. I mean, they're not short of cash. Surely the benefits of making it free could outweigh the short-term loss of revenue.

Here are my (optimistic) predictions:

  • Ping is a mere trifle. Apple has much bigger plans for building a social network that ties into other revenue streams like iTunes.
  • MobileMe will become a free subscription service and will extend the range of features. Some of these will be available to Windows users, but other features and benefits will only work on the Mac and iOS devices, thereby adding value to the Apple desktop and mobile products, and hopefully increasing brand loyalty.
  • Apple will blur the boundaries between MobileMe, Ping and the iTunes store, with a view to creating a huge network of users interacting with each other, the Apple brand, and of course, buying stuff!

I just think continuing MobileMe as this niche paid service for a small portion of Mac users is incredibly short sighted. Something like what I've described above would be good for the Apple brand, and good for Mac users too, as long as we have choices… i.e. no one is forcing us to buy our music, videos, TV, and applications from Apple. But many people would out of convenience, and that is fine. More revenue for Apple, more free services for Apple customers.

I can't tell if you're serious or not. I'm gonna say no. :)

Mark my word. This is either a good press story in a few years or the next big valley move. More deals in total revenue are done in Palo Alto coffee shops than most mid-west states.

Old farts

Wow, there's a lot of social network haters on here!

Not everybody who uses social networking sites feels the need to share their location, or share their every thought with the world. You can share as much info as you want and use it how you want to use it

Some people just use it as a replacement for email, an easy way to interact with their friends, a way to find out about events and a feed for all their favourite webisites and interests. What's so bad about that?

$$$

Mobile Me is already to much money this will probably be more. Sharing the social stuff to, that's what FB is for, why would we want to pay to do this? Seems odd to me why they would charge for Mobile me when there are so many other apps out there that are free or work better for a less price. And why not just use StreamToMe app for Music and video, its like $3 in the app store and works waaaaaaay better and best of all without a subscription. So yeah this isn't worth it at all.

There was and will be a pricetag.:D

a more bloated itunes integration.

it's a good thing there are already other services out there for streaming your home media to mobile devices and browsers anywhere in the world. Apple just wants to make that experience more bloated and less useful, like their Ping service.

As recently as 2-3 years ago, nobody would have seen the day coming when major companies like Chevy would direct you to a facebook page. And 2-3 years ago, almost nobody had ever so much as even heard of Twitter.

So that fact that, right now, you "don't see the day coming when a major company runs a commercial that directs you to" a me.com website is basically irrelevant. If there is any company in the world that has demonstrated the ability in recent years to innovate technology in pretty radical ways, make the innovation user-friendly, market it well, and make a giant splash that quite literally alters cultural trends...it is Apple. Think of what mobile digital music was before iTunes and the iPod. Think of what cell phones were before the iPhone and the iOS App Store. Think of what tablet computers were before the iPad. Once Apple fully jumps in to a technology segment, overnight they're playing chess while everyone else is still playing checkers.

There's no guarantee they will attempt anything on such a grand scale with me.com, and if they do make the attempt there is no guarantee it will succeed. But if I was a betting man...I wouldn't bet against them (if this is indeed where they have decided they want to focus their efforts).

Well stated, but I believe the idea of Apple creating a Facebook social networking website is based on the idea that Facebook is or will be failing and I don't see that happening.

Yes, people shifted from MySpace to Facebook but are people going to shift again? It could happen, but my preference would be for Apple to put their resources elsewhere.

peer pressure has been around for thousands of years

Oh god it feels good to know that I am not alone to dont care about social networks like Facebook or texting. Thx to the guy who started this thread lol.

I was starting to think I was the only one who noticed that the new generation of people dont talk to their friends that much unless they get to text them !
How many times have I seen a boy and his girlfriend (from the new generation of social networking teens) go out to take a bite at a restaurant ... they sit down ... dont have noting to talk about ... so what do they do ... they take out their cell phones then start texting or facebooking right in front of each other ... WOW TONS of FUN !!!

So yeah I couldnt care less about Mobile Me getting those stupid options.
FIX iDisk for gods sake, it takes too much time connecting to it from Mac OSX.

Add dropbox features to it, automatically sync with files on my desktop.

Faster Mail ... Put back Greeting cards into Mail

Fixing the service we pay for is a first ... not adding social Garbage because Facebook doest it !! We dont need a new Facebook or Tweeter the world already has them.

Wow...you certainly do live in the cloud...

Face it. Me.com will continue to be full of sucks features which Apple think are magical (e.g sharing photos with friends).

I asked my cousin to upload some pictures for me to see. The marriage happened in India, but I'm in the UK; so the options were:

1. Facebook; I don't give a ****
2. Email - Nopes
3. Youtube Video  ? Nopes
4. Torrent? Nopes

I just created an album on me.com/gallery. Set the permissions and asked him to upload there.

Advantages?

1. Everyone can see it; ones who are not on fb can see it.
2. There are places where FB/Torrents/Youtube is blocked but me.com isn't.

So basically, the feature that's not so useful for you is because you haven't found a use for it; not that it sucks.
