It certainly did ... it scratched really badly until they silently changed the band to incorporate a coating to lessen AntennaGate. I remember taking my iPhone 4 out of it's bumper to clean it and the band was scratched to feck. Got the phone replaced due to dust in the camera lens and the replacement had the coating on the band and didn't scratch anywhere near as badly.
How is that possible? The iPhone 4 was released under Steve Jobs. :p

I don't think Apple admitted it, but there was a lot of hearsay and comment that a coating had been used. The band also looked and felt different. The original uncoated was silver and cold to touch, whereas the coated was subtly more grey, not as cold, and felt a bit smoother. It almost felt like it had been sprayed with a spray can.

Ah very interesting thank you! Never actually head about that, in any case I never had too many scratches, so it seemed to work. Hopefully they've just had a chance to improve it further in the many years they've probably been planning this phone.

Not only that but it was BECAUSE of Jobs and Ive (who ignored engineers advice and decided to keep the phone the same for style).

I have trouble believing this. Aluminum is a much lighter material and they just perfected the colors with the iPhone 7.

I dont see any upsides in using SS. Anybody?

"a GIANT screen" :p

It was a giant screen relative to everything else on the market, and especially compared to the phone I had before iPhone.

Those were the days.

I know, I just love watching that, really shows how things have changed so fast. I got my first phone a couple of years after the iPhone was released, the LG Dare, and when I eventually saved and could afford a year old 3G it just blew me away. It's weird, if I remember really really hard, I can remember a time where my family had those nokia's and people weren't obsessed with phones, but I've realized i've mostly grown up in this new hyper-technology era, which is pretty interesting because i'm only 19.

Jony Ive has wanted to introduce an iPhone that looks like a single sheet of glass for several years

Great, so because Jony has a penchant for glass, the rest of us have to suffer... iPhone 4 all over again except lots more glass to potentially crack.

and glass is also necessary if Apple wants to introduce wireless charging
Only if you don't want to use plastic...

So this article potentially debunks the previous rumors of the iPhone carrying over the same design and materials used from the 6s/7. If this is accurate, this iPhone would overhaul the design with glass and stainless with the an edge to edge design, perhaps with OLED.

I believe this article is indicative of what we will see in September.

Maybe they are going to have glass blown into the current shape and then slide the internals in or two halves of glass welded together, no buttons or ports, everything wireless. :D

It's pronounced al-you-min-eum not aloo-min-um
It was the Brits who changed their pronunciation to that.

It all began, apparently, when an indecisive British chemist by the name of Sir Humphrey Davy in fact coined the now archaic word "alumium" in 1808. However, referring to the element in his 1812 book Elements of Chemical Philosophy, he would use the word "aluminum", much as Americans do today.

It was British scientists of the time, however, that decided, with a beautiful level of verbosity, that: “Aluminium, for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound.”

I'm not gonna pay the cost of these devices for them to be made of cheap materials. I've tried plastic phones, including google's version with the Nexus 5, and Apples with the 3G, it just feels cheaper. Even Apple's improved plastic phone with steel reinforcement or whatever is was was incredibly cheap looking and feeling. Samsung admitted this by including glass backed phones, which Sony has done for awhile, Lg switched to Aluminum. It just doesn't feel as good to hold, and it gets gross a lot easier and faster than glass or a metal design. I'd rather have no wireless charging, it honestly isn't that hard to find a dual sided cable, and half the time i'd wake up the nexus 5 wouldn't be charging because it was "slightly" off where it should've been. Literally like a centimeter, thing took more brain power and effort to actually charge then an actual old style cable, although when it did work it was REALLY cool.

If they use just a small amount it would add structural rigidity without adding weight so the glass doesn't break as the SS would flex less. SS doesn't have to be visible either if they intend on making it look like a single sheet of glass.

I'm 32 now so when I was growing up it was these new things called 'Personal Computers' that started hitting the big time. It was wonderful seeing it all just evolve over time and watching the power of these machines grow year on year.

And then out of nowhere BOOM the internet arrived. That changed everything and was totally unexpected. Then I saw that grow and evolve over time which has also been a weird experience. And again with the smartphone era, which was essentially fuelled by the ability to take the internet on the go (it was exclusively a sit at home in front of your computer experience for a long time, now you can browse Reddit on the toilet ha)

At the time all these felt like 'hyper technology' to me too, so no doubt in your lifetime you'll see new trends emerging and evolving just as I have, the smartphone era being the first. Enjoy it as much you can, and always take the time out to appreciate how far we've come in such a short space of time.

I can't remember a time without the internet :p:eek:, I do remember my brother getting a brand new blue iMac and a very young me breaking it by sticking a penny in the cd slot :p

When I hear "premium" iPhone, i don't know if it makes me laugh or just mad.

What kind of "snobs" are you? The iPhone is a premium phone. Period. Just because the internals don't match that, doesn't mean 1000 $/€ for a phone is adequate. I love my iPhone but I definitely won't pay 1200 or 1500 bucks for it. Are you out of your mind? For a phone that looks nice but that you have to put in a case because otherwise your precious toy goes to waste real fast?

iPhone is premium. An even higher priced iPhone that costs less than 300 $ in production is simply that, an even higher priced iPhone. Nothing premium about it. Just even more expensive.

There's a lot of things that are expensive that can get nicer. Look at the Mercedes S Class, extremely amazing, premium, lightning fast car, and yet you can make it -slightly- better for $40,000. "Premium" just means it's nicer than the thing below it. Look at it differently, you can have a rock seat, or a "premium" rock seat with a thin cushion attached. If somebody sees a feature or better design that they like and they have the money to pay for it, that doesn't make them a snob. A snob is somebody who would buy the phone BECAUSE of the price and then make sure everybody around them knows it.

How do the current iPhone internals not match "premium"?

And why complain if there's an optional more expensive model you aren't personally interested in?
