That doesn't even make sense. :)

Different people, different projects.

That's why they suck. Doesn't mean everyone else has to !

Green is certainly more than just solar and carbon.

Earth Day?

But people in Asia are pushing for green environment too. Last I check, they are not white, and many are humble workers.

I can't believe Apple. Honouring Earth Day is blatant racism and unfairly diminishes the importance of those from Mars, Jupiter, and the other neighbouring colonies.

This would never have happened if Steve was here. The Samsung S6 will be my next phone.

Yes am with you on that, iPhun was and still is iCrap

Supporting Earth day by producing new shirts for everyone. That's not the way to save the planet.

All Fortune 100 companies have environmental/sustainability policies and especially tout their Eco stewardship.

True, but how many of them commit to 100% renewable energy for their most energy intensive processes?

Next step would be to do the same for their supply chains and factories wherever possible.

Of course not. It's about how they make their products and services.

But the new shirts will catch people's attention, reminding them about going green.

Their staff can also wear the shirts later. People should remember green after Green Day you know. It's not just a one day PR thing.

Green yeah,

Non user upgrade parts, locked computers, no ram upgrades and so on, requiring lots of adapters, planed obsolesce of perfect capable hardware....
It seems they care!

Every day should be Earth Day! Once a year seems to be a good expression of the level to which the world (of humans) is doing to help the environment. That is, about one 365th, or 0.274% of what we should be doing.

Still, I am happy Apple is doing more than many of its rivals seem to be in this area. It is governments that have failed most spectacularly and put us all at risk.

See MacPro and MBP for upgradable parts.

Most consumers don't upgrade. The extra h/w and space would have been a waste anyway.

That only addresses battery replacement.
What about all those Apple products that make it to the landfill.
Apple should be intercepting them for recycling, which is what should be expected from "an environmentally conscience" company.

They have recycling policy: you give them your old machines/devices when you buy new ones.

I think the point is everyone should do their part. Not just Apple. Hope to see other companies step up too. I am sure they will. Even a brick-and-mortar company like IKEA just bought a wind farm to compensate their US stores' energy consumption.

Their data centers might run 100% during the day, but what about at night? Apple never mentions gridless.

Also, are the companies that manufacture solar panels green? Do you know how much energy is used to manufacturer and ship these things?

It'll probably take 10 years of a solar panels life to replace even 10% of the energy it took to make it.

As for packing, Apple did a great job of shrinking everything. Smaller packaging = more products per shipment!

Less shipments from Apple products = less CO2

This is what I mean by eating up the hype. LEED certified factories & buildings have been around for awhile and none of Foxconn's in China are. Every large manufacturing company is rushing to get on the enviro-bandwagon, they just don't brag about their LEED factories & buildings like Apple does. Apple's doing a great job but they are not leading or being 100% altruistic here. But it makes people feel warm & fuzzy & that's good for business.

This is nice

But more evidence of loss of mission and focus. That is sad and more evidence that apple leadership is now typical visionless management and no longer has vision. Eventual destination - mediocrity. Sad

I always feel the best approach is to lead by example. Turn your electricity off all year round. Live the way you imagine your neighbors should live. That sort of thing. And most of all - go nuclear in everything you do!

I'm a little confused by what you are asserting. You say Apple is doing a great job, but you say they aren't leading. If they are doing a great job, that is leading by example isn't it? I do get that businesses tend to do these things out of improving public image (though I suspect the people at Apple may actually care about such things ... my humble opinion).

…..Environmental activist group Greenpeace also featured Apple as a "green energy innovator" in its latest report earlier this month, praising the company for its commitment to renewable energy after taking issues with previous efforts.

Coming from such a highly critical group of activists, that kind of 'endorsement' has to make Apple feel very good about all their efforts in that area, and Greenpeace deserves credit for raising the world's consciousness about such vitally important matters.

We celebrate Earth Day!... by printing tens of thousands of one-off one-day T-shirts and oodles of single-use marketing materials then fly it half-way across the world. Yay.

:p

So you don't think it's the responsibility of the computer's owner to properly dispose of their old computer by taking it to the correct recycling facility? You think Apple needs to hand hold people and walk them to the door?

Yes, what I was saying to the other poster is Apple is being a good corporate citizen, but it's one of many. As I noted there are tons of LEED buildings, factories, even a stadium that have been around longer than Apple has not bought conflict minerals. Example, both GM and VW have LEED factories. I know Subaru has a enviro-conscious factory as well but not sure if it's LEED as it may predate those requirements. These factories are older than Apple's in TX. So technically they'd be leading by example.

So kudos for what Apple is doing but let's not blow it out of proportion.

Yes. Apple needs to set an example of what a "real" green company does to promote proper recycling and disposal.
Don't sit back and expect people to come to you.
Setup "Apple" recycling/disposal bins all over the world.
Be proactive and help the planet!

Everyone should care about the world and try to make a difference. Unfortunately the business of computers is wasteful in so many ways that renewable energy data centres will not even dent the consumption involved on a global scale. Apple do better than most but come on...

Aluminium - heating to make it is very energy inefficient.
Batteries - toxic and many chemicals to make.
computers - millions running world wide everyday. (at least apples are low wattage)
shipping - products materials etc move and cause huge energy usage.

Sorry but apple would have to be involved in almost every aspect of every company it uses to actually make a difference in the world and how it uses energy and materials.

It's great the data centres and all but it's the tip of a much bigger picture. Apple look good for doing a little bit but there is so much more they could do.
