Engadget reports that Apple has issued invitations for a special media event to be held next Wednesday, October 20th. The invitation for the event, which is to be held at the company's campus in Cupertino, California, carries the tagline "Back to the Mac".

The invitation also contains an image of what appears to be a lion peeking out from behind the Apple logo, hinting at discussion of Mac OS X 10.7. "Lion" has been one of the most commonly-suggested "big cat" names for the next-generation operating system.

As shown in our Buyer's Guide, much of Apple's notebook line with the exception of the entry-level MacBook is due for a refresh, and Apple has refreshed at least a portion of its notebook line each October or November for the last several years. Apple's desktop offerings have all been updated relatively recently, suggesting that the company's media event may focus on notebooks if new hardware is included on the agenda.

Ah what timing. The 12" PowerBook G4 is seriously on its last leg. (Didn't help that it fell out of the bag onto the pavement either haha)

C'mon Apple, you know you have to use the name Cougar eventually...

Pure awesome sauce!

And hopefully will shut up the whiners who have been contemplating the 'end of the mac' for the past couple of years.

Mac is every bit as important to Apple as their mobile products.

This sort of came out of nowhere.

Looks like OSX 10.7 will be called Lion.... makes sense.

I'm actually quite excited

I hope they enhance Expose to have the side by side feature from Windows 7.

Wow Apple... for the first time you pretty much killed all speculation with your invite. It's pretty much guaranteed you'll talk about OS X Lion.

However I have noted some sites saying "OMG I wonder what this is about? I bet it's about the iPad!" *sigh*

I think that Mac OS 10.7's biggest feature will be an iOS touch based element for supported hardware (ie: an iMac a touchscreen). Also I wonder if it will sport a new UI for some things.

Can't wait. Enough of the iPad, iPhone talk. The Mac is the reason why I got into Apple.

But I just want a new iLife and OS. I love when Jobs shows OS previews.
