There is no $899 iMac for schools that I can see.

I work for a large public school system and we've given up on Macs due to the high cost. No way iMac's $899... try $1150 to start. I just checked it.

$899 would be a good price and maybe we could populate a lab. $1150 I'll go with Windows.

last time apple did this, they gave the US more value for their money, and they absolutely ripped off the UK/ROW.

i'm interested to see if this does pan out, as lots of people have said, even if they do introduce 'less expensive' products, i'm still happy to pay a premium price for a premium product. As long as their overall hardware quality doesnt drop, then i, along with everyone else will be happy. :D

I believe he is talking about edu channel stuff, not what's listed in the "education store". You need to speak to a rep to find out about their full edu lineup. I do believe you can get a 17" iMac or stripped down 20" ( 1gb ram, Intel GMA, Combo drives ) for $899.

Are we talking about Apple lowering their prices or - what I think is more feasable - Apple selling essentially previous generation computers at refurb prices. Sort of like the current white MacBook.

I do think Apple sees the writing on the wall, and they don't want to disrupt the momentum of their expanding consumer base. Introducing less expensive machines is probably a very smart decision.

I am looking at an $899 20" iMac in the institutional Apple online store right now.

I want a side device, by my setup, just a big iPod Touch 10" screen, that i can see all my email updates, twitter updates, rss feeds, ect, all on one device, by the side of your setup.

Maybe the Microsoft commercials are having an effect on apple's pricing.

Glad to see they might lower them... I am interested to see what they offer as a "cheaper" Mac thou.

I think this is true and in combination with the current economy, which is the bleakest its been in decades and decades. I think this will also put a serious dent in m$'s marketshare and truly make apple a competitor with M$ in every sense of the word. very interesting news

Apple needs a $999 iMac, a $499 Mac mini and an $899 MacBook. Whether that's introducing lower-end models or price cuts doesn't really matter.

Sounds fine to me, but what they really need to do is offer more hardware selections. There is a gaping desktop hole that needs to be filled, and until it gets filled, Hackintosh sales will continue to boom.

Less expensive Macs (or should I say, A less expensive Mac model does not necessarily mean a "low priced" Mac. A $799 Mac "netbook" would be less expensive than a MB, but it would still be an expensive netbook.

Apple is going to sacrifice margins, brand caché, materials quality, etc. Turning the Mac into a commodity might increase market share, but it would not be a satisfying experience for anyone. It would be akin to slapping a Porsche logo on a KIA.

Better for Apple to give people more value for their money, i.e., faster chips, GPUs, intro new technology, etc than try and play the low price game.

At any rate, I'll believe it when I see it and not a second before.

Hold on, hold on everyone...

Can you not see that it makes sense? Doesn't a netbook present the ultimate in portability?

Look at this setup...30inch Cinema Display (or pick your size) at home attached to the netbook by the cable with a couple external eSATA hard drives driven from the Express 34 card in your netbook.

When you are ready to go out and about, just disconnect, through the netbook in your proverbial wallet and away you go with Mac in hand.

The new netbooks will have the connections for this type of ultimate hybrid desktop/mobile setup.

Likely, this will all cost less than your average macbook with similar peripherals.

Can you not see it?

I could see them doing something with the macbook line similar to what they did with the iMac line - moving the 24" down to the upper 20" model's spot. Adding value to the line without disrupting the price points.

Not sure what that could exactly entail with the notebooks though...

Hi,

If Apple puts a FireWire port in the MacBook that would definitely add value.

I think the rumors have finally come true. :) I am positive there will be no Mac netbook (based on what Apple has said in the past) but it looks like theres a good chance of a MacBook Touch.

i still think the #1 reason people still don't switch is the price of the mac. Sure, you're paying for quality, but even the refurb'd macs still "aren't that cheap". I think that if apple made a $600-$700 netbook (or even a stripped macbook) i'd snatch it up in a second.

A large Touch?

Surely it would be better to introduce a large touch/netbook/type pad at a price cheaper than the Macbook?

Makes Sense. If Apple wasn't planning less expensive Macs, why would they make Snow Leopard at all?

A more efficient, sleeker operating system is not exactly necessary for high-end computers, which gain more and more CPU power, RAM and HDD space with every new model.
