Apple has noted on its MobileMe support page and the me.com login page that access to MobileMe Web applications will be down from 10:00 PM to midnight Pacific Time this evening for "scheduled maintenance", with normal service expected to return once the site comes back up at the end of this window.

MacRumors has received information that the downtime will include will see the rolling out of several new enhancements, including an official launch of the redesigned Mail interface for MobileMe that has been available in beta form for the past month. Included in this rollout will be push functionality for the Web-based Mail client, providing real-time updating as messages arrive.

Apple is also reportedly removing the MobileMe "toolbar" for the various Web applications offered by the service, replacing the toolbar with a single "application switcher" icon that will allow users to switch between Web applications.

Finally, Apple is said to be preparing to release a dedicated "Find My iPhone" application. The application, which will be universal and thus compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, will be available for free through App Stores in all countries. It will allow users to perform all of the traditional Find My iPhone functions from iOS devices without the need to utilize the Web-based version of the service, offering device tracking, sending of messages to lost devices, and remote locking and wiping.

Apple has been busy releasing new iOS application for its customers over the past week, pushing out iTunes Connect Mobile last week to assist developers with monitoring sales data for their applications and Apple Store earlier this week to allow customers to make purchases from the Apple Store and schedule reservations for Apple Retail Store services.

When will it be free?

Still waiting for them to make MobileMe a free service.

FindMyiPhone free!? its like christmas all over again, for the 2nd time this year! (first being announcement of iPhone 4)

So the service will not be free, but is included as part of MobileMe, but the iOS app to let you find your iPhone will be free.

Any MobileMe improvements is welcome. Site hasn't changed much since 2007 when the name changed.

As for being free, I can't see Apple doing it anytime soon

I think it makes more sense to build it into the OS rather than continue to clutter up the home screens with more and more Apple-branded applications. Anyone else agree?

I wonder if this is a step taken prior to making some form of MobileMe free? Now that the app for "Find my i___" is going to be free, many folks will want to use it.

It’s a free app that only works with the paid MobileMe service, right? For people who have an iPad, say, and lose their iPhone a LOT. Now there’s an app for that.

(Or maybe it’s for the phone to find itself? You launch the app and it says “Here I am!” on the screen?)

If the whole service is free without MobileMe, then app or no app that would be cool :)

Soon you'll be able to just dump them all in a folder, so it won't be as big of a deal.

I suppose so, but I guess I'm just not a fan of the 'one app, one purpose' mentality that iOS seems to have.

I don't see how "find my phone" is useful on mobileme, it only states the area your phone is in which is a quite a large place.. and it isn't very specific so I doubt I can find it if I did lose it but I guess its better having an idea than not knowing at all.

A number of people recovered their stolen devices using the service, with the help of the police.

The Find My Phone App.

In support of the Apple philosophy of embracing open-standards, the Find My Phone app will be an HTML-compliant Web page that simply reads: 'You are holding it.'

And the only reason I used to have MobileMe was for the Find My iPhone function.

I had used it many times before, some petty occurences when I was in my dorm room and left my phone in my car, when the phone was in my messy room and on silent and I used the tone feature to locate it, and when I my phone slipped out in a cab (while I was drunk) and luckily the cab driver was nice enough to hold it and give it back to me.

Also, if the app is on the iPhone or other device that you lost....how do you access it? XD

never once have I ever lost a phone within such a space that I would ever have to use an app to find it. I couldn't ever imagine having to use such a service, forget having to pay for such a service.

I really hope they branch out the mobileme. offering a free account and then a premium acct in which you have access to these types of services for that premium......

the MobileMe beta mail is still really buggy, i hope they keep testing a bit longer

It's more than for just lost phones. I used my wife's log in and was able to track her journey from Martha's Vineyard, across the ferry and up I93 to NH it was really fun. Plus I was able to meet her from the bus she took and new exactly when she'd be dropped off.

Exactly. I am currently in High School and was able to recover my phone this way. I was told my the officer in my school that stolen phone cases are usually dismissed quickly. But the fact that I stated that I could track it interested them and they recovered my phone in a matter of days.

This is great, but how about addressing the gallery feature. Currently on the iPad, there is no universal app and visiting the website forces you to use the app instead which looks terrible. I wish they would bring some enhancements to gallery so I can finally get rid of the over engineered flickr and start usuing a more streamlined interface. I'm happy to pay, but right now I don't know what i'm paying for.

It would also be nice if they added some device filtering. i.e.: bookmark syncing based on device. I don't want all my iMac bookmarks on my iPad and vice versa.
