I think it makes more sense to build it into the OS rather than continue to clutter up the home screens with more and more Apple-branded applications. Anyone else agree?

No, because Apple can update the applications as they please, or as issues arise on a per-app basis. Instead of having to push a firmware update for the entire iOS, they can update one app.

I like the idea, and all you have to do to fix your "clutter" is make a folder for the Apple branded icons, which is what I plan to do.

Free "Find my iPhone" sounds great for me! That's the only feature I'm interested in MobileMe. Wouldn't mind free MobileMe though :D

If apple REALLY wants to take Google out... they need to offer MobileMe services for free. Maybe not EVERY service, but email is a must.

Right now I'm a dedicated GMail user, and I've been contemplating paying the money to get MobileMe.

But the fact that GMail is free, and works great, just makes MobileMe financially stupid! Sure, there are more features, but I can get SIMILAR features elsewhere. Would I like to have them all in one spot? Yes. But right now, I don't pay a dime, and Google takes care of 90% of what I need.

If Apple made MobileMe email free, I'd sign right up. And I bet I'd be 10x more interested in "Upgrading" to the other services if I had the MobileMe email account. And one of the only things slowing me down is the worry that some day I wont want to pay the $100, so I wouldn't want to have to go through the trouble of establishing a new email address! If there was a basic free MobileMe email service that would still work if I didn't subscribe to "Premium MobileMe" services, I wouldn't hesitate!

And honestly, I think Apple is slowly starting to see this. With their new Advertisement program, they'll have access to people who would be willing to pay more to also advertise on MobileMe email accounts (Similar to gmail, with minimally invasive Links that appear). It would allow them to support a free service.

I hope Apple at least rolls out free email hosting. In this day and age, they're truly limiting their income by only offering paid services, when names like Yahoo, Microsoft and Google all offer very good email solutions at no cost.

So, roll out a free MobileMe email service (at least to Apple product owners), with an A-la carte menu of:

1: Ad-free email
2: Photo Hosting
3: Find my i-device
4: Online Storage
5: Contacts/Calendar
6: All of the above.

And once you do that... Come up with a great search engine. I feel dirty using Google services, since Android was released.

How about they make mobileme reliable first? Sync just broke again (third time this year!) between my macbook, mobileme and iPhone. I didn't even touch any of the gear. It just magically decides to stop working now and then.

Still waiting for them to make MobileMe a free service.

Exactly my thought. Until this whole thing is free, Apple's got nothing on the services offered by Google. For the price of my mobile me membership, I can buy more storage on google than I'd ever use, and everything else I'd use it for is free.

Bloody cash grab is all me.com has become.

I'm waiting for the first complaint from someone that "I lost my iPhone and can't find it because the Find My iPhone app is on the lost iPhone." :)

IMO, MobileMe is worth paying for. It's an excellent service that provides you with features not found in other email clients. A free service should be limited to mail, and perhaps a couple other things. But I'm perfectly happy with paying 8 dollars a month.

(Or maybe it’s for the phone to find itself? You launch the app and it says “Here I am!” on the screen?)

That was my first reaction!

How would it work... Call your lost phone, ask whoever answers to run the Find my Phone app and describe what's shown.. :p

Presumably it'll work in the other direction too, finding your lost iPad from your iPhone/iTouch.

The other awesome feature would be to allow the mail client to work with SMTP/IMAP mail. If it had that, it would become invaluable IMO. I would use it for my hosted email and be able to access the iCal and contacts data in the same place.

As someone above said, if Apple want to compete with Google, they need to start rolling out some features!

I want a free mobile me account! (E-mail) and find my iPhone. I like the idea of iDisk space, but I don't really need a lot of space. How about a gig or 2 free then charge a premium if you want / need more.

Dropbox is free and gives you 2GB. Try the iPhone app.

As for the iPhone App. Maybe you have a friend who has an iPhone who will use theirs to help you find yours.

How? I would really like to know..

Get mobile me, activiate it on your phone.

If you need to track it, then use MobileMe.

Free App doesn't mean MobileMe (required) will be free.

1: Ad-free email
...

The problem is GMail is not ad free. It reads all your email, and tracks your web usage for all google enable sites too.

That might explain why "find my iphone" dosn't work since I install iOS 4

Or the fact that it hasn't been enabled on iOS4 according to the release notes. This OS is not released for consumers yet... it's for development phones only. I am sick of people complaining about the iOS beta's / developer releases being buggy.

Apple are greedy pigs, they will never give anything for free

WebKit engine is free.
Weekly some songs are free on iTunes.
Audio podcasts are free.
Video podcasts are free.
App Store has many free Apps, apple remote is free, etc.
WWDC videos for developers are free.
And many other examples.

You seem to be lost.

Opinions about remote wipe?

The iPhone includes the ability to erase after 10 failed password attempts. MobileMe allows users to send messages to lost devices or remote wipe. Hence, if one has an iPhone with a MobileMe account, is it reasonable to conclude there is no need to enable the auto-erase data feature?

It seems someone could quickly churn through 10 password guesses in less than a minute and then have a ... what? Dead phone?

(Should I ask the folks at Giz?)

This is a falsehood.

They offer a number of free applications including Safari, QuickTime, and iTunes.

If you have iTunes, you can usually get a couple of free songs every week, plus one music video. They offer some TV show episodes for free every week (these are constantly changing).

Thanks for commenting.

This is great, but how about addressing the gallery feature. Currently on the iPad, there is no universal app and visiting the website forces you to use the app instead which looks terrible. I wish they would bring some enhancements to gallery so I can finally get rid of the over engineered flickr and start usuing a more streamlined interface. I'm happy to pay, but right now I don't know what i'm paying for.

It would also be nice if they added some device filtering. i.e.: bookmark syncing based on device. I don't want all my iMac bookmarks on my iPad and vice versa.

This. I really thought they would've done it by now. Hopefully they'll do it as a part of this year's update. It's ridiculous really.
