'Findmyiphone' needs to be a web app that can work from any device not just iOS devices. If I lose my iPhone the chances of getting it back diminish as time goes by. If I'm alone without another iOS device, Tuff. If I'm with someone else, the chances are against them having an iOS device. The chances of being with someone with a web capable device is quite likely. Within seconds you could login to www.findmyiphone.com (or whatever) and be on the case. Why is this not possible?

Based on how "Find My iPhone" works now this makes no sense. The ability for the phone to be located is already built in to the current iOS. The interface on MobileMe allows me to see where the iPhone is, send a message to the phone, cause the tone to sound, or start a remote lock or wipe.

One will always need to log-in to something in order to do those things. Now if they are saying I can also use an App on my iPad, or on my wife's iPhone to locate MY phone, that would be a new feature. Otherwise, I see no reason for an app from the App Store to exist. A computer program maybe (although the web log-in seems like less overkill), but an App? Unless I am missing something, there would be no point in that.

The problem is GMail is not ad free. It reads all your email, and tracks your web usage for all google enable sites too.

Right. I'm saying they now have the ability to offer a Free ad-supported MobileMe email. They have their "Ad Agency" (or whatever you would call it) for iAd, so they have the clients lined up.

I think they can allow people to upgrade to Ad-free email... with extra storage etc.

Gmail has a great service. Does it log user info? Yes, but I'm not overly paranoid about it. I don't conduct much sensitive business through email, and I do enjoy how the advertisements/search results are custom tailored to me. But I know I'll be amongst a small crowd here.

All-in-all, I'm just trying to say that Google is really excelling. They were just a search engine... but now they're becoming a true empire. Gmail, Youtube, Picasa, Google Chat, Google Maps, Android, Google Chrome Browser and soon to come Google Chrome OS.

I was an early GMail adopter, and because of that, I'm very google dependent. But now that Apple and Google are no longer the closest of friends, I'm worried. I'd like to have a MobileMe account, but right now I'm just unwilling to cough up the money! So a free account would be great!

Find my iPhone is Already a Web App inside www.me.com. You can login and click the "Find my iPhone" Web App. Are you a MM user?

I don't see how "find my phone" is useful on mobileme, it only states the area your phone is in which is a quite a large place.. and it isn't very specific so I doubt I can find it if I did lose it but I guess its better having an idea than not knowing at all.

Oh , I dunno, it's pinpointed my iPad to within about 10 metres, so that's pretty good. I don't expect it to tell me it's under the sofa in the spare room!

Whoo! Wow, I am sooooo super excited that they announced they're fixing iDisk, getting rid of all those cryptic "Sync failed." error messages, and we'll be able to individually password-protect folders now! Finally! Plus the ability to open and save files directly to iDisk from iPad apps, like Pages. Apparently it's going to be fast, simple, and reliable now, like Dropbox is! Nice.

Er...wait...that was part of the announcement, right? I swear I heard that in my head...

It's been a WebApp for a long time now.

They are adding an App in addition to the web app.

Well, with iAds, maybe. But iAds seem to be designed for iOS Apps at this time.

Google only excels in their ad monopoly. Most of their other "service" are just money draining.

MobileMe can be bought for a few dollars a month from 3rd party retailers.

The iPhone includes the ability to erase after 10 failed password attempts. MobileMe allows users to send messages to lost devices or remote wipe. Hence, if one has an iPhone with a MobileMe account, is it reasonable to conclude there is no need to enable the auto-erase data feature?

It seems someone could quickly churn through 10 password guesses in less than a minute and then have a ... what? Dead phone?

Except if they have a way to block the access from WiFi and cel towers (and with AT&T, let's face it, this is not hard), you wouldn't be able to get to it to wipe it remotely.

And yes, having a dead phone is the whole idea, although it would suck if you let someone play with it for a minute and they bricked your phone. But, you should be able to restore from backup up to the last point you synced in iTunes. I'm not sure if after a remote wipe there's some mechanism that prevents it from being used at all until the owner verifies himself, or if you just get a clean phone that could be registered and used (maybe with a different SIM card)?

And the only reason I used to have MobileMe was for the Find My iPhone function.
... when my phone slipped out in a cab (while I was drunk) and luckily the cab driver was nice enough to hold it and give it back to me.

me too! just last month. slipped out in the cab drunk at 3:30 in the morning. I sent a message to the screen with my work number, and the cab driver called and returned it! so cool.

it's super useful, because you can remotely have it start making a pinging sound (even if phone is on vibrate) so you can walk around until you hear and find it.

saved me a good hour of my life!

Enough with the enhancements. Try fixing the basics such as iDisk. This should be far superior to Dropbox which is free for the first 2GB and yet much much better...

Free?

I really doubt this will be free, especially if it's useful. Apple does make a lot of free apps, but something that could end up saving you from having to buy a new phone could not be free.

I was a MM user but I let it expire as I use Dropbox and various other workarounds. When I used it you couldn't use 'find my iPhone' from your iPhone. I just went to www.me.com on my iPhone and it has changed and looks like you can do that now. Why the app then? More importantly, will it work from an Android/blackberry? If the answer is yes. Great! Still, Why the fuss about the app?

Hear hear, insane that I have to use an app like Cyberduck to manage iDisk content because the native web-based interface is severely dysfunctional.

I've paid and used .mac and now me.com for years, but always felt like it was a necessary pain, like going to the dentist. The two tier suggestion, with free email, FindmyiPhone, and limited iDisk as the free basic version is the way forward IMO. Not holding my breath though.

already does

They're still charging for this garbage?

besides multidevice syncing, and find-my-phone; they are charging for: PRIVACY - I don't want google selling the details of my personal life to advertisers - lets hope MM keeps a pay-for-privacy option (if only facebook offered something like this)

I would like apple to give an option to pay like 20$ or something of that amount to just get find my iPhone because mail and everything elsev but I would only use find my iPhone because I like my current email

720p video?

I wonder if Apple will upgrade the mobileme gallery to include 720p video, alongside a storage upgrade to compliment the 720p video in the iPhone 4?

Currently the max is 940x560, which seems stupid considering youtube has 1080p and 720p and that the new iPhone can shoot and edit 720p.

Apple's terrible implementation of the IMAP protocol in Finder means that iDisk is far faster in 3rd party apps, like Panic's transmit. This isn't a recent phenomenon either, it's been that way for at least the last five years.
