It annoys me that Apple are increasingly pushing their major updates to the Autumn / Christmas season. I understand it, but it means we have to suffer a dearth of updates for 9 months should our purchasing needs not fall into Apples mandated seasonal glut.….

Everyone is wondering about that, and speaking for myself, I have more $$ to spend on personal electronics earlier on in the year than I do in Nov/Dec, with the gift giving season and all that.

As you inferred, Apple is of course to a large degree at the mercy of chipmakers, and as far as notebooks is concerned, after the latest delay, Broadwell is still slated to make an appearance "later this year," whatever that means, so until then, we could be left twiddling our thumbs. :(

There was supposed to be a Haswell refresh for desktop processors using the new 9-series chipsets, that are also required for Broadwell, but I'm not sure how that fits into Apple's plans for the near future.

Uh huh.

And sources tell THEIR story of why a MacBook Air WASAN'T possible, while I always said, and still am saying, that any things possible.

Apple reckons they can pull the over my eyes, they just better have some darn good stuff. :p

Retina on a small screen, Too small...... But the facts it's now possible, that it wasn't last few years when they stuck Retina in the MacBook... We'll. Apple knew this then, my reason is, they just delayed it till now.

Refresh my memory. When did Apple suggest a Retina screen for MBA wasn't technically possible? Just curious.

I never said Apple couldn't do it. Based on non-Apple articles, they never did it. At the time, my guess would be technical reason,, that may nit be the actual reason, and Apple never explicitly said anything, but it makes sense. If it was possible on the MBA, don't you think Apple would have done this then?

In actual fact, when Apple could do it it, the Pro' users benefited this more.

I'm thinking apple can update the screen size on all MacBooks without changing form factor jay by reducing the bezel. 12 and 14 air 14 and 16 pro with dedicated gfx available in both pros. That would be what I'd like to see. That said apple people probably know the market better than I do.

The REAL question here is the HUGE bezel that needs to vanish.

I'd also love to see that greatly reduced, but with the lid's thickness tapering out to mere millimeters, I suspect that the ample bezel might have been required for strength and rigidity, to lessen the possibility of a cracked screen.

But I trust Jony to solve that limitation in future 'Airs'.

So this won't be coming out by August? Looks like I won't be getting a mac for college. No way I can buy the 2013 air if this is coming out 2 months after I were supposedly buy one.

They are really alienating the people that are buying a laptop for college. I pretty much need to choose something before august as I can't take my desktop to class and it isn't even practical in the dorm.

Might have to settle for the 2013 models if this "fall" prediction is true...

Exactly, the effective screen real-estate will be MUCH lower than today's MB Airs.

Not really tempting at all.

:apple:

Apple will find a way to tempt a lot of people with this if they get it right. They just want to transform the current 13" MBA experience into a smaller, sleeker new design with better performance, perhaps merging two models into one. This new 12" rMBA model may even feature a touchscreen with an eye toward future iOS compatibility.

Your brain would be if you paid all that extra for the pleasure of using it with a 1.3 or 1.7Ghz dual core CPU. You'd be in MacBook Pro territory then and have more options open to you. There's £20 difference between an 11" MacBook Air with 8Gb, 512Gb SSD, a 1.7Ghz i7 and HD4000 GPU and a 13" Retina MacBook Pro with a 2.4Ghz i5, 8Gb, 512Gb SSD and Iris Pro GPU. Who in their right mind would want the 11" Air instead?

I would!

Portability is key to me. Give me a retina display fitting in the 11" MBA frame and a Broadwell CPU and I'll be very happy.

----------

As long as they allow me to get at 1TB of storage and 8GB of RAM, I'll go get the new glasses I'll need to see this thing :)

Gary

I hope you are right, but I think a 1TB SSD is not happening for the new retina MBA.

Retina MacBook Air. For some reason, I have visions of the 1st generation MacBook Air, which was so criminally underpowered that YouTube videos made the thing overheat, and played at about a 1 fps rate. Nobody in his/her right mind should buy a 1st generation retina MacBook Air.

Many people, including myself, will.

When will the iMacs be updated. We hear NO NEWs about them. Are they being positioned out of the line up?

They were just updated not too long ago...

Why update them if there isn't a new processor to put in it? What's the point?

They did this on the iPad Air.... Why not the MacBooks.

In fact, while their at it, do the same to their iPhones do.

May I ask why you would rather physically press down on the button to select or click something rather than just tapping the trackpad to do the same? I've never understood why Apple does this with their MacBooks. I hope they change it. I won't hesitate to buy one.

Less chance to misclick. Especially when your dealing with multiple gestures.

You can of course disable this feature: System Preference -> Trackpad -> Tap to click.

Now you can stop hesitating and buy one :D

We can dream :) I wonder what the real advantages are of carbon fibre over aluminum?
It´s about 6 times stronger and 30 percent lighter.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon already has a carbon fibre / magnesium body.
But they hide it under some kind of rubber finish.
The all new BMW i1 has a carbon fibre body. This material is ready for mass production finally.
I would love to see a MacBook with a well designed carbon fibre body. :)

Who said fall? All we hear are rumors about "Later this year" and "Second half" and "soon"

Later this year and soon could be tomorrow and Second half could be from 1st of july to 31st of december 2014.

Interesting news. I was wondering when they were going to retinize the MBA line. Never liked the display on these things and when you viewed one next to a Mac book pro it really showed how much better the retina display is.

Heck, I might even buy one if the price isn't silly which with Apple is always a concern. ;)

I'd trade some battery for a better screen. The 11 inch air is unusable with that screen.

I do have one of those and I'd say that's a really nice size. Before I got one for my girlfriend I was a bit skeptical but after years of usage I would not go for anything bigger than this. 12" screen in a same size enclosure would be an ultimate deal for me. 13" is simply to big of a computer for our kind of use.

Very interesting! Thank you for the information. I suppose we can expect to see it sometime in the future then at apple given their obsession with making things lighter and stronger. I wonder how much more its costs.

----------

It'll be interesting to see how much Apple Tax they add to this upcoming model.

As a wild guess, it won't be much if any. Apple has been good about keeping prices stable these last 5 years.

Good luck. As long as you don't use it to display video, you'll probably never notice the fact that it's criminally underpowered, like most 1st generation Apple products.

To each his own. Just because it isn't what you want doesn't mean it won't be good enough for other people.

(I bought the first generation MBA too) :)

CF is also somewhat brittle (unless expensively made with 'soft' fibers in alternating plys, and thickened up), and somewhat unstylish. Hence the rubber (heavy) coating. And expensive, especially at small thicknesses.
And it's costy to make... you can only 'cast' it, you can't machine it without significantly weakening it.

Aluminum flexes, then dents/bends, then tears... CF will flex (better than aluminum), but then micro cracks, then cracks then ruptures. the carbon is actually not the issue... it's the glue.

Aluminum is also a better heatsink, transferring heat away from the source better. CF glue also melts... often as low as 250F. Yes, that's awfully hot, but it's a lot closer to the operating temp than say aluminum's melting point.

Magnesium.... You know who made the first magnesium skinned commercial computer ... Apple (well, the company that took Apple over;-).
