It has to be said: If Apple releases an iPad with mouse support, what is Steve Jobs going to do about it?

And an iPhone or iPad with Airplay connecting to a TV and wireless mouse and keyboard support with the right software would make a decent desktop computer).

While I in no way question adding mouse support would vastly enhance the iPad (no wonder Android supports mouse via even USB OTG), it's highly improbable it'll ever receive mouse support. "KISS" is their motto.

At one point I was considering buying an Air over Pro. Then I looked at them both next to each other at the store and, well, retina, what else. Photo editing or no, it's just nice to look at such a beautiful screen. So this is a nice and expected update.

Someone here suggested that Apple remove the rMPR 13 entirely and just have the 13 inch Air model. I would be really pissed at that. Another reason I didn't go with the Air is that the bezel is too thick, or wide, and I don't like the grey. I like the white on my iPhone and iPad, but when it comes to a laptop I much prefer the glossy black of the Pro.

With the current size of the MBAs, Apple could potentially introduce an edge-to-edge Retina display, which will bolster the 11" and 13" to 12" and 14", respectively. Failing that they'd keep the bezel size and just make the display Retina.

However with the addition of a 13" rMBA, that begs the question of why keep a 13" rMBP. So I'd imagine that they'd either drop the 13" rMBP in favour of the 13" rMBA, or they'd upgrade the rMBP to a Quad-Core processor. That way there will be a clear definition between the power of their consumer and Pro portable products, and Retina will be standardised in all their laptops.

All of the above is speculation, naturally -- very excited to see what Apple will do because I haven't a clue. :)

I'd love to see a 13" quad core. I don't really want a 15", but the only reason I consider it is for quad core.

I would love to see a Retina Macbook Air, if the battery remains the same as in the current 11,6" model. Performance is also important, so I am very interested to see what Apple is planning.

I would have one consumer machine and two "professional" machines.

MacBook Air 12" (Retina display) $999

MacBook Pro 13" (Retina display) $1299

MacBook Pro 15" (Retina display) $1999

They could offer other channel configurations of each such as a $1199 MacBook Air 12" and a $1499 and $1799 MacBook Pro 13" and the $2499 MacBook Pro 15"

This could be the new line-up. 13" may become 14" and 15" into 16"
All even numbers :)

Just to clarify, we now have an 11,6" and an 13,3" model. I think that the rumored 12" model will be 11,6"..I don't think that Apple will change anything in the display sizes.

is for sure they can't put the new MBA higher price than 1099$, because of 13" MBP 1299$

Of course they can! If the new MBA is noticeably thinner, weighs less, and has a new and better trackpad that is good enough reason to charge more.

Not sure why some think a Retina MBA would mean Apple is going to discontinue the 13" rMBP. They are very different computers that happen to share a screen size. The MBA is running a low voltage processor optimized for battery life. The rMBP has a much more capable processor and can now support 16GB of RAM. There is a place for both.

What I'd like to see is a high res option in the rMBP line for 2880x1800 in the 13" and 3360x2100 in the 15" rMBP.

This new Retina MBA is going to have a low native resolution. It makes sense to differentiate on screen resolution along with processing power.

The fact that the 13" MBA has a higher resolution than the 13" MacBook Pro never made any sense.

Meh. I don't see iOS moving to any kind of usable file system anytime soon. Cumbersome iCloud silos don't cut it for me, and Dropbox is a sad substitute for a real Finder. And I really don't at all want a "computer" that forces me to get ALL software throught the App Store.

I think iOS is great for consuming content, pretty dodgy for actually getting much done.

I understand your perspective and pretty much agree from a corporate perspective. But for the masses, I really do think that this may be a great choice. Even for me, as I stated earlier, I can, and do, do 90% of my work on the iPad.

For the corporate world, I agree that you do not want to go through Apples app store. They do have a solution for that, but I do not know how good that is. The one thing where it would really help is to force people to store their work on the network where it can be backed up and protected effectively and cheaply. Most people today still store too much on their laptops and walk out of the office with too much. Plus a move to iPads will eventually allow for BYOD to extend beyond the phone and to include your computer. I have been predicting this for a while in my circles and I am still convinced that the day will come.

I assume that adding multi windows is more difficult than fixing dropbox or iCloud to allow for better organization of files, so I do not see this a much of an issue.

Bottom line, more work before this all happens but as I said, if my crystal ball is plugged in and working, I am going with either iOS8 (unlikely) or iOS9 (more likely) as when this corner is turned

...which would fall in line with a report from NPD DisplaySearch last year claiming that Apple is planning to introduce a 12-inch MacBook Air in 2014. That report added that the 12-inch MacBook Air would come with an ultra-high resolution 2304 x 1440 display, and was corroborated by the reliable Ming-Chi Kuo.

The text in the original article reproduced above implies that both NPD DisplaySearch and Ming-Chi Kuo agreed that the resolution would be 2304 x 1440. But that's not the case, Ming-Chi Kuo's prediction DIDN'T MENTION RESOLUTION.

I reckon the resolution quoted is an error. It just doesn't make sense as many posts have already pointed out.

Of course they can! If the new MBA is noticeably thinner, weighs less, and has a new and better trackpad that is good enough reason to charge more.

Maybe, but the real question is would it be enough for consumers to feel it's worth the price hike? Companies can set a crazy price but ultimately the consumer will reject if it doesn't feel there is value.

My guess is consumers today expect Macs to get thinner, lighter, better display with each successive generation. The MBA is overdue. When the Retina MBPs first came out there was a premium on them compared to non-Retina models. But it's 2014 and Retina on portables is as an expected standard as power windows in a new car.

I think this 12 Inch MacBook will have a carbon fibre body and a saphire glass trackpad.
Or to say it better, I wish it will have.

Not likely. Carbon fibre is too expensive.

Happy with my current system and will not bother upgrading. I use my current MBA for web browsing, email, and light documents - nothing that needs a retina screen to reduce battery life - I have my rMBP for more intensive editing work.

Go figure!

Days after I order a new rMBP 13" these rumors starting coming in one after the other. I knew it was a matter of time for the Air to be retinized, but I had a good opportunity to sell my 2012 MBA to my brother. The tax return was just burning a hole in my pocket and I tend to upgrade every 2 years anyway.

I will be jealous if its just as thin and light with some new fancy trackpad!

May I ask why you would rather physically press down on the button to select or click something rather than just tapping the trackpad to do the same? I've never understood why Apple does this with their MacBooks. I hope they change it. I won't hesitate to buy one.

I never got used to tap to click, it always ended with me selecting/'clicking' on stuff all over the place.

That said, the button in my trackpad was the first and only thing to break on my macbook air ><

Hate it too. Enough with this "fall BS".

This is not true, at least not for all Apple products. We have a September launch for the iPhone, and an October for the iPad.
The last iMac update came out in September, but the Macbook Air latest update came out in Summer 2013.
We also had launches in the first half of a year.

The only possible good thing about a 'retina' 2304x1440 is that whilst the native resolution is only 1152 x 720

I'm not sure how you guys keep screwing this up. A retina 2304 x 1440 panel by default is 2304 x 1440 native! To say otherwise is nonsense.

1152 x 720 is an alternative resolution but even then it isn't t like the old days.

The poster you're quoting is actually completely correct - the effective resolution of 2304 x 1440 retina panel is 1152 x 720. Retina MacBook screens default to pixel doubled configuration. You get the effective desktop resolution of the 1152 x 720 panel, but with four physical pixels driving every single pixel represented on the screen.

The net result of that is small amount of screen real estate. Sure, you can increase screen real estate by running scaled resolutions, but then you sacrifice the "retina" quality.

REally don't need retina for mba..

Can we instead have 20 hour battery life?
Can we have 14 inch in current 13 inch body?

Seriously.. let Retina mbp stay that way and let mba have above.. which is far more important

Uh huh.

And sources tell THEIR story of why a MacBook Air WASAN'T possible, while I always said, and still am saying, that any things possible.

Apple reckons they can pull the over my eyes, they just better have some darn good stuff. :p

Retina on a small screen, Too small...... But the facts it's now possible, that it wasn't last few years when they stuck Retina in the MacBook... We'll. Apple knew this then, my reason is, they just delayed it till now.

Retina is nice, retina touch is better

I really would like to see the Air with a touch screen.

Every day after using my iPad I find I am touching the Air's screen, so please Apple, make my touch DO something!
