It’s been said many times already, but this is by far the best news I’ve heard yet about this OS release cycle. 1Password and ilk are utterly ripe for a Sherlocking.

This is going to have to be really damn good to get me to leave 1Password, but I'll certainly give it a shot.
This exactly.

I'd love it to be, but 1PW has really matured over the years. From travel vaults, doc storage and so on. It'll be a heavy lift for Apple to get close to that functionality

I don't understand why this seems like a big deal to people. I already use the Keychain app on my Mac as a standalone "Passwords" app, although I am a little irritated it always asks if I want to use the Settings interface instead; I like Keychain. And on iOS, well, the Settings interface is fine :)

I pay for 1Password and I am nowhere close to using all of their functionality. I use it because I needed a dedicated app to help store and manage accounts that I access only from my windows work laptop, and I like being able to access those passwords from my Apple Watch.

Apple’s password app just needs to let me store and retrieve account login and password details for all my accounts and it should suffice in getting me to switch.

Sounds like a good start, but I'm hoping they'll expand to include custom entries (such as software licenses, etc.). I've been evading 1Password's subscription model with their older versions but can't avoid that forever, especially if I upgrade to a new machine. If Apple has a decent replacement that mirrors 1Password then I'll make the jump.
Absolutely. They missed a trick here, as they could have created an app called Secrets, for squirrelling away all manner of private or sensitive information.

Apple plans to introduce a new Passwords app in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, reports Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The Passwords app, which will serve as an alternative to third-party apps like 1Password and LastPass, will provide a simpler way for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users to access their stored login information.

There's already a Passwords feature built into Apple's operating systems, but it is hidden in the Settings app and it can be a little difficult to find for those who are not familiar with it. Apple has been gradually introducing new password features, such as storing logins and passwords, supporting one-time login codes, and offering password generation options directly in Safari.

Like the existing Passwords section in Settings, the dedicated Passwords app will be built on iCloud Keychain, Apple's feature that is able to sync login and password details across Apple devices. It will support all of the features that Passwords in Settings supports, and it will also work on the Vision Pro and Windows PCs.

The app includes logins and passwords for websites, Wi-Fi network passwords, and Passkeys, a feature that uses Face ID or Touch ID to log into websites instead of a password. Data from the app can be automatically inserted into websites and apps when a user logs in.

Apple's aim with the Passwords app is to encourage customers to use stronger passwords and avoid repeating passwords for multiple websites and services. Apple will be competing with longtime third-party password services like 1Password, and the company does plan to allow customers to import their passwords from other services.

Apple plans to unveil Passwords during next Monday's WWDC keynote event.

How is it hard to find? Drag down, type pas in the search bar and it’s right there. If they can’t find it, how will they find the app? You don’t even have to open settings to search for it.

I’ve been using Secrets as my password manager for years now. No subscription, rock solid and works great across iOS/iPadOS/MacOS. Developer also responsive and helpful. Coming from 1Password, which constantly needled me to buy a subscription, it’s like another planet.

Honestly I don’t think it’s reasonable to trust a closed source password app, much less without any hosting options.

Especially from Apple, who are very accessible by law enforcement and have historically been compelled to lie about access.

Credit where it’s due, I trust them more than any other big tech company, and they are more transparent than most. But that’s not saying much. It is still not enough.

As well, I think the vast majority of us need something cross platform compatible. Even if you are “all in” with Apple what’s to say you won’t get a job that requires you to use some windows device some day.

All of that, and… well, Bitwarden is free.

I'd actually be interested in using it but the only way I'd consider giving up my current password manager (Bitwarden) is if it was available for all the platforms I use daily - including third-party browser plugins and Windows. Without that, it's just another way to trap you in Apple's ecosystem.
Not just you but others also say something similar: you do know can keep current password manager AND use Apple one? Have 2 instead of 1?

I was 1Password user before they moved to subscription and I wanted to move to Enpass and get lifetime license and I was waiting for discount so I use Bitwarden while waiting and when Enpass finally got offer on lifetime license and I brought it. I still keep my Bitwarden cos I like and thought would be good idea have 2 in case one have issues so I got 2 password managers. Both have exact same info.

This app can potentially disrupt the landscape of password managers if it is free and cross-platform! The cross-platform piece with browser plug-ins, etc. will be key!

Looked at their website, it says: "One-time purchase and subscription options available". Also seems like their pricing structure is as hidden as your passwords might be. Not going to trust an app like that.

I hope Apple's app will have secure notes, passport and drivers licenses, credit card information, etc. I don't mind going into settings for passwords. Keychain is horrible (IMO), looking for an Apple password gives me 20.000 options to wade through...

I use both 1Password and Keychain. Both work great.

My main irritation with Keychain is you'll see a shedload of duplicates for a single login and it's not always clear why. the UX also isn't as good as 1P, but that could change with a standalone app.

Otherwise, the only advantages for 1P (for my uses) are:

1. I have a family account so I have my own vault, my wife has her own vault, and we have a shared one where we keep Netflix, WiFi etc
2. It allows non-password stuff, like there's a feature to upload a passport photo etc. 1P is much more of a broad, secure vault than simply a password manager, which ultimately is what will make it possible or impossible for someone to ditch it for Apple.

Well it's about time. I then can finally get rid of my subscription to 1Password and stop using a few other ways of saving my passwords. I just wish more sites would use Passkeys rather that Passwords. hint, hint MacRumours
As a user of 1P also, I'm curious: what does Keychain not currently do that is holding you back from leaving 1P?

Reguarding

What about tvOS, its not like anyone that owns/uses a AppleTV doesn't have a variety of accounts that wouldn't benefit from a password management app.
Without FaceID, you'd need to enter your password manually. AppleTV is fine as it is, because it instantly pings your phone and lets you use FaceID there to auto-fill on the TV.
