as if car manufacturers do anything at all for existing cars once they're sold lol. My CarPlay was unusable in IOS10 and it took a year and an update from apple to fix it. Honda wouldn't do ****
There's always third party. With my car, there's no official way to upgrade the built in system to do CarPlay. I could have replaced the APIM and screen with units from a later model, but that would have just given me wired CarPlay on a 7 inch screen and would have been expensive. I just added a cheap 3rd party 10 inch screen that does wireless CarPlay. I'm thinking about adding one to my bike too, putting the iPad in the tank bag isn't ideal.

I’ve been using that one in TestFlight. Really heats up my phone and slows it down quite a bit. And doesn’t work at all in iOS 26.

As an EV owner, I’m glad it's going to be a native feature. I’m not sure if I just mis-read something, but do I need to wait for a developer to make an app for it, or is it built in?

my car has CarPlay . I just mean they never update the firmware ever. it's the same as it was in 2017 when I bought it. And cars aren't easy to put 3rd party stuff in like they were 20-30 years ago. I know I woulda Messed up my sound in my previous car if I tried to put a modern headunit in

I just assumed the iPhone was just piping in 720p video feed on all instances of og car play. Not sure why automakers would need to change anything.

CarPlay’s the only thing keeping my abandonware Chevy Bolt alive. It had “one” software OTA since 2017.

Have you gone wireless CP on your Bolt? (I have a 2019 Bolt)

I have this dongle and it's phenomenal

Apple this week announced that iPhone users will soon be able to watch videos right on the CarPlay screen in supported vehicles.

iPhone users will be able to wirelessly stream videos to the CarPlay screen using AirPlay, according to Apple. For safety reasons, video playback will only be available when the vehicle is parked, to prevent distracted driving. The connected iPhone will be able to detect when the vehicle is in motion and end playback.

Apple says that automakers need to add support for CarPlay with AirPlay video, so it will likely take some time to roll out. It appears that the AirPlay functionality will be available for both regular CarPlay and the higher-end CarPlay Ultra, but it is unclear if it will be enabled in any existing vehicles, or if it will be limited to new vehicles.

From the CarPlay page on Apple's developer website:This feature would be especially beneficial in electric vehicles with CarPlay, as it would provide the driver and any passengers with entertainment while they are parked at a charging station. Some electric vehicles already offer this capability natively. Tesla, for example, has long offered a Theater app that can play videos from apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Twitch on the dashboard screen, while the vehicle is parked.

Apple has not shared any further details or images for AirPlay video in the car. Availability of the feature might vary by country based on safety regulations.

There were already some unapproved ways to watch videos through CarPlay, with various jailbreak tweaks and TestFlight beta apps promising to unlock such functionality. Now, it is something that Apple will officially allow.

Couldn’t stop laughing at this.

What's so funny?
I'm missing it I think

(it's super useful to be able to watch video via the screen while charging)

Perfect for causing accidents.

No worse than everyone driving around using their phone as is.

I walk 5-7 miles per day around town and about 75% of the drivers I see passing me are screwing around with their phone.

It's totally out of control. I literally sold my bike as I didn't want to be on the roads and get killed by someone drifting into the bike lane while scrolling instagram.

I listen to a lot of YouTube videos when I drive through CarPlay. If there was a way to select videos like you would with a Podcast and hit a "Skip" button for ads on CarPlay, that would be a great enhancement. There is a lot of more immediate content on YouTube than on podcasts.

I don't watch the videos when I drive and it would be worthless anyways because now the video and audio aren't in sync because of the third party wireless device I use.

I don't understand this either. Doesn't CarPlay just take over the whole screen, as when it's showing a map and playing voice directions?

There's not enough bandwidth on current system to wireless CarPlay audio without the occasional stutter. I do not think it will keep up with video.
That's frustrating to know that there is no technical limitation preventing this from working with existing vehicles.

I have a 2025 car and I'm sure I'll never get this feature 🤷‍♂️

What app is it in TestFlight?

Thank you for confirming what I said; watching videos in CarPlay while driving is good for causing accidents.

I don't disagree.
You won't be able to watch them while driving (with this official method anyhow).

(yes, I realize you were originally replying to someone who was suggesting a way to do that. I don't condone that behavior)

Yeah it really frustrates me that these features can usually only be obtained by literally buying a new car. It’s peak consumerism. I lease a 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 and it doesn’t support wireless CarPlay or Apple map directions on the HUD or Apple CarKey… but the 2025 model does, because screw every customer who already bought a car. I highly doubt they’ll add support for this either. We shouldn’t be switching cars every few years like we switch phones, but that’s basically how the lease model works. If I wanted to buy out my current car, I’d have to live with old tech for the rest of its life despite Hyundai having the ability to push the features OTA if they really cared.

Agree with all this ..

Do you love your I5?

That's on my list as a possible next car after my Bolt
(I would end up buying a lightly preowned one though ... perhaps a 2025+ model in say 2028/2029).

Would love to have an audio-only YouTube app for CarPlay.

YouTube has a lot of channels where people mostly just talk, so only the audio is crucial. Currently, I can play them on my CarPlay-connected iPhone and the audio will come through the speakers, but I have to use the phone to find, select, and start the video playing. A well-designed YouTube CarPlay app could make it easier and safer to pick YouTube videos and play the audio from them through CarPlay.

Yeah despite the lack of Apple support it’s a SUPER fun and reliable car. I love it. I will never go back to gasoline. It’s also the smoothest ride I’ve ever experienced. Have you heard of a “limousine stop?” It’s where you gently let off the brake right before coming to a stop, then press down again. It makes the car stop very smoothly without jolting the passengers around. When using 1-pedal driving, the car does a limousine stop every single time. At first it was so smooth it almost made me sea sick. You don’t even feel like you’ve come to a complete stop cus there’s no sudden jolt.

But yeah I really wish they would add better Apple support to my model. Definitely try for a 2025 model. Do not go for 2022, they had pretty bad charging circuit issues.

Maybe YouTube music has what you’re looking for? I’m not sure if it can play any video but I think it might and it has a CarPlay app

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie "From Here to Eternity" on my Toyota.
