What app is it in TestFlight?

Here's a link to their website. It was briefly on the App Store. Apple removed it, so I'm not entirely sure if I’m allowed to link it here. Both of their testflights are full anyway.

Yeah despite the lack of Apple support it’s a SUPER fun and reliable car. I love it. I will never go back to gasoline. It’s also the smoothest ride I’ve ever experienced. Have you heard of a “limousine stop?” It’s where you gently let off the brake right before coming to a stop, then press down again. It makes the car stop very smoothly without jolting the passengers around. When using 1-pedal driving, the car does a limousine stop every single time. At first it was so smooth it almost made me sea sick. You don’t even feel like you’ve come to a complete stop cus there’s no sudden jolt.

But yeah I really wish they would add better Apple support to my model. Definitely try for a 2025 model. Do not go for 2022, they had pretty bad charging circuit issues.

Sounds awesome! I'll for sure be in the 2025-2026 range with my timeline, as that would sync up with units coming off lease in 2028/2029

If it requires action from the automaker then it's effectively limited to new models only. Car manufacturers very very rarely ever add such features to existing systems.
Unless they can charge you an extortionate amount by plugging a laptop into your car and switching a “no” to “yes”.

Tesla is still way ahead of Apple in terms of features and usability.
I dunno, the Tesla drivers that I know are constantly holding their phones to check messages, searching through WhatsApp to get someone’s current location and then manually entering it in their satnav, answering FaceTime calls from their wives, etc.

Nice. But not sure how many cars will be supporting this or even when it will become available!

What about additional screens?

In my truck I have an aftermarket head unit with DVD player that plays movies on its screen when in park, but it can play movies in motion on the two rear seat monitors I installed in the headrests of the front seat. It would be great if I could play movies from my phone on those screens. I would upgrade my head unit if needed to do this, but hope I don't have to upgrade the rear monitors again.

Same with my wife's Honda Odyssey minivan. It has a BluRay player built in that plays on a large monitor mounted to the roof in the back. Really nice for the kids when travelling long distances, but a pain to mess with the discs and try controlling the menus etc from the front passenger seat while the kids are watching in back. It would be great if we could control everything from a phone in the front passenger seat to play from Netflix, Max, Hulu etc.

If I'm sitting still I can just sit their watching on the phone/iPad itself and listen over the vehicle speakers with a wired or bluetooth connection, so this really doesn't add much.

It's probably safe to assume most cars out there won’t be getting this feature anytime soon.

Wait so this is only going to be a possibility if you have a car capable of wireless CarPlay?? Or would this work with wired CarPlay if the manufacturer supports it.

I have a 2023 Kia Niro EV

Apple this week announced that iPhone users will soon be able to watch videos right on the CarPlay screen in supported vehicles.

iPhone users will be able to wirelessly stream videos to the CarPlay screen using AirPlay, according to Apple. For safety reasons, video playback will only be available when the vehicle is parked, to prevent distracted driving. The connected iPhone will be able to detect when the vehicle is in motion and end playback.

Apple says that automakers need to add support for CarPlay with AirPlay video, so it will likely take some time to roll out. It appears that the AirPlay functionality will be available for both regular CarPlay and the higher-end CarPlay Ultra, but it is unclear if it will be enabled in any existing vehicles, or if it will be limited to new vehicles.

From the CarPlay page on Apple's developer website:This feature would be especially beneficial in electric vehicles with CarPlay, as it would provide the driver and any passengers with entertainment while they are parked at a charging station. Some electric vehicles already offer this capability natively. Tesla, for example, has long offered a Theater app that can play videos from apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Twitch on the dashboard screen, while the vehicle is parked.

Apple has not shared any further details or images for AirPlay video in the car. Availability of the feature might vary by country based on safety regulations.

There were already some unapproved ways to watch videos through CarPlay, with various jailbreak tweaks and TestFlight beta apps promising to unlock such functionality. Now, it is something that Apple will officially allow.

In a couple of weeks, you're allowed to do that legally in Austin because of FSD.

Vendors have always sold things for your car that will land you a hefty fine/sentence. I could go there now and order a set of flashing blue lights for my car right now if I was stupid enough to.

Even if it’s not illegal to have video content in view of the driver where you live, if someone is dumb enough to watch videos on their car screen while driving, they were probably dumb enough to do similar with the phone beforehand 🤷
I remember taking a taxi ride at least 30 years ago, and the driver had a portable TV on while he was taking me to the airport! Powered by the cigarette lighter.

Always thought it was a joke that my car had a “A/V” button. Do they not know what AV stands for? There’s been no “V” feature or option to enable. On top of that there is physically no way to turn off the display screen, the screen must remain on at all times except when ignition is off and it powers down the radio. o_O

I hope this feature lets you continue listening to the Audio only while driving. Plenty of interesting Podcasts and Audiobooks on Youtube. I don’t need the video stream but i want to be able to listen to it while driving.

Maybe YouTube music has what you’re looking for? I’m not sure if it can play any video but I think it might and it has a CarPlay app
Apple Music unfortunately only works for Videos that are labeled as “Music”. Not for most podcasts or other videos that are interviews or things that can be easily experienced as audio only. It would be great if we had the original youtube app on Car Play and it automatically switches into Audio Only when driving.

You COULD??? 🤣
Yep.

I've never actually done it. But the capability is there. And given that I don't like artificial limitations for "safety" and that I had full control over how the 3rd party screen got hooked up, I'd have enabled it if it had a lockout.

Besides, it's not like the screen isn't visible to a passenger. No reason they can't watch a video while I'm driving.

Oh, I can think of a reason or two…unless they're in the back seat, and wearing AirPods. Distraction is distraction, whether it's direct of indirect.

If distraction really mattered, the driver would have to be in a fully enclosed box unable to see or converse with passengers.

There are a LOT of things a passenger can do to be distracting, and in fact FAR more distracting than a video playing in the periphery of your vision.

Distraction doesn't matter?? Really?? If you believe that, please let me know where you live so I can avoid being there! Maybe there are more distracting things than videos playing on your dashboard. But why add more?
