Obsolete?! My Late 2012 iMac begs to differ! It still runs impressively well. I remember paying quite a bit for it with the best CPU and graphics I could configure it for (somewhere north of $3k), but it was worth every penny.

Not sure why some people run dinosaurs and like it.
2010-2012 Mac Pro owners were way ahead financially by sticking to those machines and upgrading them.

Once Apple made non-upgradeable computers the 'trade-up' business model was locked in because consumers really did have obsolete machines.

Apple wants their devices to be seen as disposable so consumers will be motivated to buy the latest and greatest 'next-big-thing'.

For a company that seems so concerned about the environment, it would be nice if they gave us the ability to repurpose our iMac's for use as a monitor. Apple may state that my 2012 27" iMac can't support the latest macOS, but it would be nice if I could use it as a monitor for my 2019 MacBook Pro....or my Mac mini.

I think the deficiencies of the M1 iMac design is in its color choices.

Adopt the color pallet of the last Intel iMac and it looks better.
I am in real need of upgrade (still using 2015 4K iMac) and I really tried to convince myself to like the M1 design but it’s impossible.

The M1 is really an inferior design.
The rear looks nice.
But the front is just bad.really bad.

I’m the type of person who really cares about good design and iMac always been my favourite Apple product both for function and also as a beautiful design piece.
the M1 is not like that at all.

So I’m refusing to buy one and considering a Macbook while still hoping for a redesign.

The front's lines are near identical to the last Intel iMacs.

It's the color combination that makes them look different.

I have the same iMac. How did you get Ventura running on it? Also - what is the "sleep/wake issue" ?

I also have a late 2015 27" iMac and am contemplating the upgrade to Ventura using Open Core Legacy Patcher. Any advice on potential issues including the sleep/wake issue mentioned gratefully received.

So ultimately I would recommend using OCLP to do it either with a clean install or upgrade. The issue I'm experiencing happened before the upgrade every so often (maybe 2-3) times a year. Now it's happened to me 5-6 times in the last week. Again I saw another post here with the same issue but wit ha supported iMac so im not sure if it's related to OCLP or just a general bug. You could always wait for 13.1 or later to do the Upgrade if you want more stability. Otherwise the only other issue is inconsistency of continuity camera working. Every other feature works like a charm. I'll link the video by MrMacintosh who goes over pros cons and hoe to do it.

Open Core Legacy Patcher! The 5.1 version is dead simple to use and there are already some goof YT videos walking you though the process. I followed MrMacintosh‘s video I believe, the docs for the application are pretty good but it’s nice to have a walkthrough.

When my mac goes into deep sleep, I cant wake it. Peripherals aren’t connected and the power button wont wake it either. I have to shut it down totally with the power button then boot it back up. I saw another post about this related to ventura so I'm not sure if its just an OS issue or the OCLP.

Thank you so much. I now have Ventura on my iMac late 2014 5K iMac. Open Core Legacy Patcher is amazing. Just as fast as Big Sur and everything appears to be working well.

I used MrMacintosh tutorial video to guide me through the process - Very easy.

Are they going to totally discontinue the iMac? Are AIO really that popular outside of work environments? I know th iMac shines as an AIO, and people on Macrumors really enjoy it, I guess I can't help but feel it's a niche market holding onto the iMac. But maybe I'm totally wrong.

It was BS when they stopped supporting my 4Ghz late 2014 5k iMac, especially when it was still far faster than much of their lineup. With an SSD and RAM upgrade it's still competetive with all of the lineup and could run Ventura without issue. Apple just gets worse and worse and worse. Without a 27" iMac model, which really should be 30" by now anyway, there is not a single compelling product in their lineup and even the TOTL models come stock without enough RAM or disc space to do much beyond booting up and using the Notes app.

Do you know of any issues if I'm using Boot Camp? Can this method still be used?

I am very upset that my 5k 27” Retina iMac can no longer be upgraded to Ventura. It is still a great computer and would have years of service left only if Apple choose to keep supporting it. This planned obsolescence is not good for the environment.

You have a different perspective.
The bezel shouldn’t have existed in this new model at all.
At least in the previous gen,the bezel is black and part of the 2-tone design complementing the black Apple logo.so it doesn’t appear too much in your face like the M1.

Lack of Apple logo is also making it look bland, boring and incomplete.
As if it was made for school or a hospital.

All the charm is gone.

The old gen actually looks much more modern and futuristic than the M1.

Awesome! You're welcome! Let me know if you experience any issues with sleep/wake or continuity camera not working.

Also as a note to everyone reading another down side is you have to do full updates each time not incremental. Not that this day and age its difficult to download a ~12gb update but still something to note.

OMG I said the front's lines are near identical and what makes them different are the color combination.

For the omission of the Apple logo at the front my guess is the iMac M2 will reintroduce it considering may made comment of the debadging.

iMac M1 has an inverse 2-tone design. Instead of black border & unpainted surface it becomes white border with painted surface

Most of the fleet purchases of the iMac M1 are for schools or hospitals.

Intel Macs have hardly changed from 2007-2011 & 2012-2020.

The colors of the iMac M1 harkens back to the 1998-2001 iMac G3.

For the iMac 27" replacement I am thinking they could continue with the lines of the iMac M1 but the the 2-tone colors of the iMac Pro.

The silver iMac M1 reminds me of the iMac G5 and in terms of color nearest to the 2007-2020 Intel iMacs sans the black border.

That's what I'm rocking. Have replaced parts (PSU, Fusion Drive, etc.) and bumped the ram up to 32gb when I bought it, but it's been an absolute beast for a decade. Plan to upgrade whenever the M2 Minis drop provided they support 3 screens. -- otherwise I'll go with a Studio.

Long time reader, first time posting. Dan and the team at MacRumors - keep up the great work!

I got my iMac 27" (top spec) machine just before they stopped selling them. I use Windows for 3D Studio Max, so I had to get an Intel machine. I run Parallels - it's only 10% slower than native Windows (based on complex scene render time and Geekbench comparison). And for that tiny speed drop, so not worth using Bootcamp. I'll be sad to see this become obsolete - I love Mac but sadly I can't not have Intel.
