The 3GS is still the second-best-selling smartphone in the US (after the iPhone 4 of course):

https://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/22/iphone-4-and-3gs-rank-as-best-selling-u-s-smartphones/

And it’s probably cheaper to make than the iPhone 4 is. I’d be surprised if the 3GS doesn’t go away (Apple happily replaces best-sellers all the time) but at the same time, I can’t say it makes “more sense” to give the iPhone 4 away for free, if it’s a more expensive device.

I'm not saying it isn't a good seller, I think time needs to move on and Apple have been moving away from Plastic and this is the final step. Retire it while its still remembered fondly.

Anyone who buys a 3GS at this point in time is a pure sucker.

If they were to offer that old pile for ANOTHER year, that would almost be an insult to the consumer. As someone who bought a 3G that could barely run iOS4, even with whatever 3G patch they came out for it, I pity anyone who buys a 3G and expects two years of usage out of it.

I really feel like at this point there is a super small, if any chance of seeing an upgraded design from the iPhone 4.

I'm sure the Siri stuff is going to be AMAZING, but I'm still hoping for a slight upgrade to the phone. I'll really be a bit surprised if nothing changes.

The fact that "upfront device cost continues to be a major factor in customers' purchasing decisions" has always surprised me when the monthly cost of owning an iPhone can run around $100. One can spend $1,200 a year for service, but $200 for the upfront cost is WAY TOO MUCH. Hmmm.

My thoughts exactly. When you spend 80$ a month for a data plan, the price of a phone matters very little (logically). But who says the masses are logical!

Hahaha you mean nothing made by apple is free. Even though its just the 3rd gen, i dont think it shud be free

No, nothing is free. Even "free" phones are "free on contract". You pay for them, and you pay with interest. You just don't pay up-front.

how dumb do you get?

Most of the money you spend goes toward paying the monthly bill. Fork out the upfront money for a better experience. Not to mention the resale value when you're contract is up

'Abramsky outlined his rationale for such a move back in late June, and he continues to stand by his predictions of an iPhone 3GS offered for free on contract or $399 off contract in today's report."

I don't understand why anyone would buy the 3GS $399 version mentioned since they could get it for free and with the $15 data plan from AT&T and end up paying $360 plus tax for the data over a 2 year period.

hahaha $399 is not FREE

Who wants to get into a 2 year contract to get two year old phone?

No Facetime no Sales.
It is not going to support iOS 6 and many of the iOS 5 features.

Is it just me or does the American carries seem a real hateful breed?

We get the iPhone 4 free on a lot of contracts here in the UK. As for the 3GS, thats just expected to be free. Most people would laugh if someone tried to charge us for that. Same as most of Europe I think.

So whats the point of a low cost iPhone 4?

iPhone 4 should be free.
iPhone 4S should be $99
iPhone 5 should be $199

(With contract)

Telus in Canada has offered the 3GS for free on contract for some time now. Of course, our Canadian contracts are 3 years long, but that's a different story.

Telus is also offering the iPhone 4 on contract for only $99, but the offer expires October 3. I wonder why that is....

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_6 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E200 Safari/6533.18.5)

I may be wrong but I doubt $100 up front is the big barrier to entry for feature phone users. I'd guess it's more the $2000 over 2 years in data fees etc that keeps them from switching.

Which is why the article says it's FREE with contract.

Oh you still end up paying for it through subsidy. Will Apple still provide updates for the 3GS or will the latest iOS still work on it? 2 year contract is a long time when the phone is already 3 generations behind. So in another year when iOS 6 comes out and drops support for the 3GS and will require a A4/A5/A6 equipped iDevice, the 3Gs will be left behind.

This makes sense, get them hooked with a free phone, making them want the newer ones later.

The sooner old hardware is EOL'ed, the sooner developers can code exclusively for new hardware and we can get better apps.
