Why wouldn't they just discontinue the 3GS? Look at it this way, is the 3GS going to be able to support iOS 6? 7? Most cell phone contracts are for a period of 2 years, so is the phone going to be able to handle all of the new software 2 years from now?

New iPhone pricing

I'll be interested to see how they handle pricing.

It makes me cRaZy that the iPad is
16 GB $499
32 GB $599
64 GB $699
So I'm paying $100 for the first 16GB upgrade but the other 32GB is only $100. That's $200 for 48GB!!

In a MacBook Air, $200 gets me 64GB more of storage and 2GB more of RAM.

I think the first upgrade of the phone should get you a slightly faster phone or more RAM or something like that! :)

(32 GB SD chips are $40 all the time, they've got to be able to get the price of this down.)

I'd rather the 3gs cost $100 for a one year contract. That way we can get the 3gs if we needed a phone and wait only a year til the redesigned iphone comes out.;) The 3gs is 3 years old. It can't last 2 more years.

Is it just me or does the American carries seem a real hateful breed?

We get the iPhone 4 free on a lot of contracts here in the UK. As for the 3GS, thats just expected to be free. Most people would laugh if someone tried to charge us for that. Same as most of Europe I think.

your country has regulations and laws that care for people and consumers...(Universal Health Insurance anyone?) America on the other hand, only cares about money. I will get out the first chance I get.

Preach it brother! I'm right with ya.

On another note, a redesigned iPhone 5 will come out on Tuesday.

People that still buy iPhone 3GS's need to get their finances in order.

If you're going to spend roughly $1000 per year for your phone's contract, why will $150 bucks hold you back from buying a much better phone?

This does't make sense to me.

Because, in the UK at least, it's only £324 (or 501USD) over the 2 years; for the phone and data/calls/texts. That's £104 less than buying the phone itself from Apple's UK store.

whatever is released/announced tomorrow, I'll be buying the highest-end version, so news like this really doesn't concern me much... that said, I know many people who have a 3GS and still love it in spite of the fact that there are tons of new phones out there with bigger screens/better performance/higher-quality back and front cameras/etc., and almost entirely because of the up-front purchase price of it (that, and the user experience of iOS).

it'd make logical sense to us to discontinue the 3GS since we put performance and high-end features toward/at the top of our priority list, but to (what I know is still a large portion of) the public, this kind of thinking goes by the wayside in comparison to the mindset of just being able to own an iPhone, regardless of what model...

Check it out:

$49.00=iPhone4 with 2 yrs contract(8GB)
$399.00=iPhone4 for purchase-Prepaid services(8GB)

$99.00=iPhone4S-16GB-2yrs contract
$199.00=iPhone4S-32GB-2yrs contract
$299.00=iPhone4S-64GB-2yrs contract

$199.00=iPhone5-16GB-2yrs contract
$299.00=iPhone5-32GB-2yrs contract

Just wait and see!!

I think the off-contract price is the most important part of a low end iPhone. As others have said in some places (UK) you can already get a free iPhone 4 (and 3GS) if you sign up for 2 years. A £200 - £300 unlocked / off-contract low end iPhone 4 would really make a difference. I think the current 3GS (8Gb) is £350. It's just too much for the pre paid market despite how great a phone it is/was,

No way

I have an iPhone 3GS and it's so slow it's painful to use. I've restored it, so that's not the reason...

Please, just give the 3GS up. :(

If Apple can make them cheap enough I can see why they don't discontinue them. I just don't get why people would buy them...

What happened about the news of Apple entering the prepaid market? $399 seems a bit much for a contract free low end iPhone.

Agreed, a low cost model targeted at contract free purchases would be ideal. Especially if they're going t make them world phones - more choice for the consumer what provider to use month to month, depending on rates.

I appreciate that the on contract model works for many, but you end up paying so much more in the long run. It's just a high interest loan from a phone company.

+1

my 3GS just sucks with iOS4. $399 for that is not a good value. $399 for a iPhone 4 unlocked is more reasonable and I might consider it. $349 for a 16GB iPhone 4 and I'm sold.

Which is why the article says it's FREE with contract.

Ha! It always amazes me how many people get taken in by this marketing such as yourself sir, the phone isn't free, the true price of the phone is incoperated into the monthly contractual fee, its simple as that.

all this BS news... just give me a new iphone with a 4" screen

You will be disappointed. Increasing the screen-size would lower the pixel-density. And it would make things more difficult for developers, not to mention making the device bigger and reduce the battery-life. The current size is a good size. Big enough, yet small enough to allow a small device.

I might see Apple going for 3.7" in the future, with an edge-to-edge screen. The outer dimensions of the phone would remain the same.

Like you really need a 4" screen...

Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe that this article has just predicted Tim Cook's first ever "One more thing..."

:D

Ooh, that or "iPhone 3GS for $199 on a prepaid carrier."

Does Apple plan on supporting the iPhone 3GS with OS updates for longer than expected? The 2nd gen models for example didn't even make it through the full lifespan of iOS 4.x topping out at 4.2.1 vs. the current 4.3.5. Continuing to sell the iPhone 3GS means that Apple will have to continue to support it through all iOS 5.x iterations, with no early cut-off, until iOS 6 and the next iPhone is released.

Yeah why pay for an old stalwart that works perfectly and is incredibly capable when you can buy a piece of junk that's new from a competitor just to show your disposable income and lack of sense?

This is the most retarded comment in this whole thread.

The 3GS is a dinosaur, and it will NOT perform well in two years. The 3G can't handle iOS4 to save it's life (had one and wanted to do nothing but throw it at a wall by the end of the contract), why do people all of a sudden think the 3GS is going to be handling iOS5/iOS6 and into iOS7 and be a phone that runs software well for FIVE YEARS into its design?

Drop the 3GS, move on Apple. And give up with the 8 GB crap, it's not 2004 anymore.

You just bought one didn't you and you have to justify your choice somehow...

Ok. Nothing unusual here. It's macrumors after all.

no one reads here... i have an iphone 4... i just upgraded from a 3gs.... i had a droid x before that... thus the reason for the comparison...

2007 more like, but yeah, I agree.

Not likely

I think that they will have a iPhone lineup of iPhone 4 8gb, iPhone 4s, and iPhone 5. That way they can sell it as "all of our devices support facetime"(excluding the shuffle, nano, and classic, and the classic is on the chopping block). Personally, I think the nano, classic, and shuffle should die. They should be replaced by an iPod touch that has the ability to go up to 128 gigabytes or more. The nano is basically a high tech watch without a watchband, and the shuffle is just super cheap.
