if someone do something risky to take a nice shot and if something happens to that person that is not apple's fault
but we will take your picture if you submitted and we will take all the credit for it
but none of apple workers, engineers did anything risky to take that shot
well I think the person deserves a little something
at lest the one that wins

me personally, I will keep all the shots to myself and screw Timmy boy
he can go and climb the mountain himself

So many people who don't understand the difference between a marketing contest and a paying job.

That’s not the point. It’s your work and while some may be fine with donating their work for free, the company has on grounds of good faith and good PR to not take work others have done for free.

"Apple believes strongly that artists should be compensated"

Only when Apple gets caught doing exactly the opposite.
They were planning to pay the printer shops to print the winning photos for billboards,
print advertisements, etc.., the owners of the billboards to display that photos
and even the agency/editors to sort all the submitted photographs out.
Just the artist himself - oops, they "forgot".

Then don't submit your picture.

People should be paid for their work. Apple is obscenely wealthy, I think they'll be okay. They could give each of the 10 winners $1 million each and it would be absolutely nothing to them. People defending this nearly trillion dollar company are gross.
shareholders are watching Tim's log book. If the valuation doesn't go up. It's dead money for the shareholders because they don't care how much cash Apple has. It's the appreciation in value that matters.

Better not submit any photos to apple then. Maybe it’s better to have tim’s face on the billboards with the catch phrase “amazing.......” or “it’s normal.”
Sounds more like like Google and Facebook to me.

Can you please name ANY previous photographer who "won" that contest? One name please.
"Exposure", seriously...
Because they are not savvy enough to leverage the attention that’s on them. I would happily have Apple display my work all over that I submitted for a competition. It would be highlight in my portfolio forever.

I didn't realize paying photographers was such a controversial subject.

If you think photography isn't a skill and anybody could do it, why did you specifically seek out a photographer? Why didn't you just have a buddy take the picture for you?

Doing it "for exposure" or "for a portfolio" is laughably stupid. When is your portfolio large enough or when do you have enough exposure for your work to suddenly be worth paying for? You're literally asking somebody to do their job in exchange for just being able to say they've done the job before, something they can likely claim already.

This isn't about defending Apple in every case, it's about defending Apple in this case.

People entered a competition*, then decided they didn't like the rewards. Well, then don't enter the competition then? Apple didn't hire them to do work, these people voluntarily decided to enter a contest. By all means, they can express a desire for Apple to offer greater rewards/prizes, but they shouldn't demand them, nor attack Apple for forcing a contest upon them.

(* I"m assuming those complaining did enter the contest. If not, the criticism is even more bizarre).

On the other hand, it's completely voluntary so I'm not entirely convinced the complaining is warranted. Don't like Apple's terms? Don't submit your photo. It's not like they're tricking people into it.

Exactly. Sadly, many people refuse to step up and take responsibility for their actions. And then whine on and on.

So true. Not shocked. Some people love portraying themselves as victims. And never grow up.

I think bodybuilders would benefit this type of work...

“Look at me...buy my supplements.”

The next slogan should be: "Customers who have a bent iPad should are encouraged to contact AppleCare"

You can't buy food with a medal or happy thoughts, takes money for that. I don't work for free, do you?

i don’t work for free, no. but my hobbies, they give me happy thoughts... as an amateur, passionate photographer, “photographers” of late are just plain embarrassing

Indeed.

It's literally sad how well modern branding has trained a vulnerable populace into such quasi-religious feeling toward their corporate overlords.

Products are meant to be used. Government is instituted to serve. Whenever you find you're the one being manipulated, cajoled or used, you need to take a long, hard look at what's really going on. o_O

Here's my idea. Have a real contest designed for amateurs. After all most people taking pics on iPhone are amateurs. And say the winner will receive a free Apple product of their choice limited to i.e. $2,500 in value and a tour of Apple's new campus in Cupertino.

Just an idea.

and this missing of the point is the whole problem. if you stumbled around the corner and saw something you had done purely out of passion, the sense of pride, the knowledge that others were looking upon your art, and appreciating... news flash. that is more than enough.

The language used sounds greedy to lay persons, but it is extremely STANDARD language in any contract involving IP, particularly involving copyrighted photographs. Apple does this, to protect themselves from copyright lawsuits later on.

Photogs are entering a contest, VOLUNTARILY. No one compelled them to do so, and the amount of effort to use a point and shoot like an iPhone...cmon.

If you cherish a photo you don't want used, don't submit it.

The irony here is that those photos these people are complaining about would have likely been shared in the public domain via social media anyways. The only difference is that they see to make a buck with Apple.

If this was an Apple Pencil drawing contest I would agree. I thought the point of this campaign was to show what amazing photographs anybody can take at any time with the phone in their pocket. How is that work?

The problem is that Apple is using these peoples photos for a (much reduced for them) advertising campaign while marketing the submissions as a "contest". They pay the people who come up with their ads and they should be paying the people, out of courtesy, who win this "contest" that will end up profiting the company. Again, this is a nearly trillion dollar company. That amount of money is absolutely absurd. They should be paying them regardless because even millions of dollars to each of the winners would be nothing to them.

Correction: apple. You don’t watch keynotes do you?

Whenever people purchase apple products next time should be required to have their head engraved saying “owned by apple.”

Heck! They can even throw in a selfie with Tim Cook!

That to me alone would be worth entering lol.

It’s not a job. It’s a contest.

Either way as a photographer I think it would look good to have your photo featured in something related with a company as big as Apple. It’s something to put on your resume.

No, it's a marketing / ad campaign that they're calling a "contest" where they wanted a free license to use the pictures in their marketing / advertising material.

I'm getting really tired of this "Apple has lots of money and should give me some because I feel aggrieved" nonsense over and over.

The terms were clear-- send a picture, maybe you'll be able to show your mom that Apple put you on a billboard. This was for fun, not profit. The whole point is that pictures taken by common folk on the phone in their pocket are good enough to fill a billboard. Catering to pros defeats the purpose.

Anybody who makes money from their photos knew this. If it's really a pro complaining, it's not because they want to be paid for their contest submissions, it's because they don't like that Apple is using some schmucks backyard photos for their advertising rather than commissioning them. They used to get paid for work like that, now it can be crowd sourced.

If you want to be paid for your random pictures, submit them to a stock photo site.

No photographer was forced to enter the competition -- professional, amateur, or otherwise. Complaining about the T&C's after submitting their photos is borderline ridiculous.
I almost agreed with you, then I noticed that the word borderline snuck in there...
Call your employer immediately and tell them that you don't need to be paid anymore, you're willing to work for free from now on.
How is this comment in any way relevant? Apple isn't their employer. They don't work for Apple. Apple isn't even pulling these images from stock photo sites. They opened a site and said "if you'd like the chance to see your photo printed big, send it here".

Call your friends and tell them that if they want your company at dinner in the future they'll need to pay for your time. You're not just going to hang out because it's fun.
