Don’t worry, no chance that I would be seen entering this kind of competition But having observed many of these ‘fun’ competitions, most offer far better prizes or compensation than this. If much smaller companies can offer decent prizes, Apple looks distinctly tightass.
Exactly the words “much smaller companies”. Having exposure by a company such as Apple, is huge.
I compose music, and if my music would be featured in Apple ad, that would be bloody huge exposure.

Also, if all this self proclaimed pros will be lining up in here for profit, that will be a true money grab contest. I, for one, do not want any of those. For that they could hire a professionals from start and makes this almost pointless

Bud, for a person to have a single photo featured as the primary photo in a marketing campaign by the largest company in the world is not being exploited. If you think that Apple couldn't pay someone to take a better picture than anyone will enter in this contest, you're delusional. That's not why they're doing it, and that's not people should enter it.

If they are not doing it to save money then why were they ripping off people in the first place?
Truth is, is they would not have, then this discussion will not exist. But they did...

Incorrect.

If you had access to high profile billboards and other local media to provide this exposure, it would be a far better deal for the plumber than the hourly wage he would have been paid.
Yeah, offer that to one the next time your toilet is clogged. I hope you have some good rubber boots.

They never were ripping people off in the first place. That's the point.

Also, the whole thrust of the ad campaign will probably be the fact that it was taken by an amateur.

Nope. Huge exposure for the music and Apple but none for you unless the advertisement made a big deal of it being attributed to you. I would get a thousand times more exposure for myself posting to my own social media networks than an apple advert.

I have colleagues who had ‘exposure’ through apple shot on iPhone ads and they sure haven’t benefited from the exposure.

Most companies and websites when you submit a photo it becomes the property of that particular entity. It figures an Apple user would whine about until they get something for nothing.

If there was ever, one thing to make me leave Apple for something else. It would probably some other users on here and their user base in general.

Apparently, you don’t know what “exploitation” is. The simpliest definition:
  1. to utilize, especially for profit
  2. to use selfishly for one's own ends
This is a marketing stunt whose purpose is to sell others on the quality of the iPhone’s camera, especially now that other smartphone cameras are getting equal praise. Apple is asking someone to demonstrate that.

Ironically, only a career photographer would possibly benefit from exposure in a marketing stunt. Yet professional artists have rejected similar corporate contests for similar lack of compensation. It devalues the effort and skill of every entrant.

Supporters of Apple frequently go on about the 'exposure' the company can give an individual is all they need rather than any financial incentive when entering competitions.

Well i have a question for these supporters. Apple have run thousands upon thousands of competitions for decades. Therefore, if what you say is true about just getting 'exposure' is enough, can you please name me 5 people who benefited hugely from Apples 'exposure' of their winning competition entry. Thanks

i'm sure all 9 pages are filled with the same.. The key thing here is Apple saw the tweet, realised the error of their ways and actually fixed it.. That deserves some positive praise..

Next we just need timetravel back on the watch and the apple world will be near perfect.. ;)

Let’s hope someone steals and profits off your work in the near future. Make sure you don’t whine.

You're assuming. They complained before they entered the unfair competition.

Seriously? Stealing and making profit? It was stated up front. By entering the contest, you agree to let Apple use your image. It’s not stealing.

That's the one issue I have with Apple these days. They seem a little too responsive to bad press these days. The Apple of old (under Steve Jobs) would have just showed them the middle finger and carried on business as usual.
It happened again, see Facetime thread

No photographer was forced to enter the competition -- professional, amateur, or otherwise. Complaining about the T&C's after submitting their photos is borderline ridiculous.

I was forced to play their game, at gun point I might add.
