No, he's right. You even pointed out a "multi-billion company" when making your point. This is entirely about money for you.

You contribute all kinds of things that could be construed as "yours" but only complain when it's Apple. Discussion forums, FaceBook, Instagram, etc are all examples of user created content. You're making those companies billionaires by contributing. Apple asked you to submit images. People did it for the same reasons they post here, Instagram, FaceBook, Yelp Review, Tripadvisor, whatever...they want recognition. They want to feel smart, capable, cool, entertained, whatever.

What's pathetic is you think a $2,000 royalty to some random person is Apple trying to save money.

Basically, quit crying.

That people submit a photo or music that does not stop them owning there own art/material.
I wonder why Apple actually decided to change and actually pay the winners. I guess they do not agree with you.
It is not about Apple. It is about ALL companies/corporations (but especially Apple that claims to care about artists) that are ripping artist not just in all copyrighted materials. It is definitely NOT about recognition. No one will know who were the winners of the photos. You just will see the photos.

What people post in Facebook, etc, althouth it is not considered art it is still owned by you and they are not going to post your Facebook/Yelp lame photos in any Billboard or marketing campaign.

So it is about Apple trying to save money are rip off artists otherwise they would not have change their position in now paying them.

Basically stop being pathetic and supporting companies that are TRYING TO RIP ARTIST.

Why the hell cant Apple explain these things upfront?

It makes them look stupid, greedy and uncaring.

You just proved my point: you keep focusing on how much Apple is worth.

For everyone acting like Apple actually needs your photos, you overestimate your value as an "artist." The point of this campaign is to show what ORDINARY AMATERURS can do with their iPhones. The whole point is to highlight that the iPhone can turn any Joe Schmoe into a brilliant "photographer" due to the iPhones camera hardware and software. And let's be honest: the iPhone is doing most of the work.

This generation of IG "entrepreneurs" needs to stop. Rise and grind, you're entitlement and overestimating of your contribution to society.

Regardless who is submitting, amateurs or pros (artists or not), the content you are creating is yours. And the iPhone is Not doing the work. I do not think the iPhone can take photos by themselves, so your points are ridiculous. And who are you to define who is an artist and who is not? The point is that it is copyrighted.

It is pathetic that a multibillion corporation like Apple is trying to take advantage in order to save money in marketing campaign.

It is pathetic that you are supporting corporations that are trying to RIP OFF artist.

As someone mentioned before, with your criteria that no one is forcing to submitt anything to Apple,
Let's suggest to Apple the new contests they can do in order to save money.
- Contest on programing the next iOS
- Contest on designing the next Mac Pro
- Contest on how to rip future artists and save money on marketing campaigns.

I guess you are the persons that think that music, photography and video content should all be free.
You might as well work for free and get paid with exposure...

I must agree with your statement it is spot on.

And who are you to decide who are amateurs and Pros, and who is an artist and who is not?

The point is that it is copyrighted.

Which is why the owner of the copyright has to grant Apple a license.

They are not targeting artists at all. Only iPhone users. They are not trying to save money. What they want is to get professional and/or artists to stay away from the contest. The best way to do this is to offer no money.

- Contest on programing the next iOS
- Contest on designing the next Mac Pro

I have no problem with this if anyone is willing to do it.

If you expect to get paid, you are not an amateur.

So how should Apple do it if they do not want any professionals and/or artists to submit content?
[doublepost=1548434711][/doublepost]
That’s not the point. It’s your work and while some may be fine with donating their work for free, the company has on grounds of good faith and good PR to not take work others have done for free.

Should Apple compensate every programmer for the open source stuff they have used for the years?

Shame on Apple. Pay artists the going rate for their work whether ameteur or professional if you’re going to use it in advertising. I heard what they did to Siri, fronting as a shell company to get out of paying going rate and residuals for that scope of work. Embarrassing.
So anyone who takes a photo with an iPhone is an artist now?

Hmmm I must of missed the part where you had to fill out a Job Application.
It was a contest for fun don't like it don't enter the greed of you people amazes me.

People should be paid for their work. Apple is obscenely wealthy, I think they'll be okay. They could give each of the 10 winners $1 million each and it would be absolutely nothing to them. People defending this nearly trillion dollar company are gross.
[doublepost=1548435319][/doublepost]Don't enter then Simple.

seriously? if you produce art or content and your content is used for PROMOTING a product, you wouldn't want to be paid? do you work for free?

But straight up relinquishing rights for nothing is criminal. Creative always get ****ed. I see these type of contests all the time for musicians where they don't comprehend their true worth.

So open source programmers who grants a license for no compensation are criminals?

Lets run the scenario and see what people think:

Apple runs a photo contest. The winning photo will be use in any Apple marketing or product promotion campaign. The winner will get a 'owners credit' on any marketing or product promotion documents.

Apple feel the winning photo is perfect for a new product they are releasing. The photo is put everywhere, tv ad's, adverts in tabloid papers and magazines, ad's on websites and on billboards. The marketing of the product with the help of the photo makes the company $2 billion and all the owner got was a 'thankyou' back when they won the photo competition.

Creative ad agencies are impressed with the photo and track down the owner via the 'owners credit' and find out it was shot on an iphone by an amateur who works in the building trade. Suddenly these ad agencies go 'hmmm, no thanks, not for me'.

So, Apple make $2 billion with the help of your photo winning entry and all you got was a 'thankyou' because that is what the T&C's of the competition were. You still going to be happy at that prospect..somehow i don't think so.

So if Apples loses $2 billions, how much should the winner pay Apple?

No photographer was forced to enter the competition -- professional, amateur, or otherwise. Complaining about the T&C's after submitting their photos is borderline ridiculous.

No one is harmed by photographers convincing Apple to change their mind about their terms and conditions.

Damm, I've got to get going on taking pictures and if I win refuse the money.

Just because a couple of whining sniveling people on twitter is not going to take the FUN out of the contest.

This is a contest and that's it.

Some more food for thought.
Going by the "must get paid bs" how is this contest fair to people who don't own a Iphone?
Should Apple be forced to give everyone iphones so they can enter the contest?

Watch it, some body will start a tweet that they should give everyone an iPhone. ROFLMAO

Apple is planning to pay the photographers who win its "Shot on iPhone" photography contest, the company announced today in an updated press release.

Apple clarified its position on payment for the photographs following multiple complaints from artists that were highlighted earlier today by The Verge.

The "Shot on iPhone" contest was first announced on Tuesday, and at the time, Apple appeared to be offering no compensation to the photographers. Winners would be paid in exposure, with Apple planning to display winning photographs on social media and on billboards.

Photographers were understandably upset at a company the size of Apple asking for artistic work sans compensation.

Apple now says that all photographers who win the contest will receive an unspecified licensing fee for the use of their photos on billboards and other marketing channels. It was not previously clear if Apple had intended to pay licensing fees, as the prior language released by the company did not mention it.The updated information is available in the press release announcing the contest and the PDF with the official rules.

Apple's "Shot on iPhone" contest kicked off on January 22 and will run through February 7 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. The contest will be judged by both professional photographers and a selection of Apple employees with photography expertise.

Its so lovely to see how everyone is trying to suck a little bit or as much as they can from Apple with various legal stuff :)

Just another Example of a Compete Lack of Basic Common Sense by AAPL & Tim Cook.

Reminds me of the iPad "What's a Computer ?" Ad campaign that they pulled after a ~2 months because of the Heat they received from that one !

I wonder if any of the Analysts will ask Cook next Tuesday if (any member of) the AAPL Board has asked him to step down.

I'm NOT sure who to Blame more for AAPL's screw-ups, Cook, or the AAPL Board.

isn't it a little petty for a professional photographer to get in on a contest that's obviously geared towards regular people who take photos of sunsets and their dogs? The goal of the contest was to demonstrate the ease of use of the iPhone camera so much so that the average, everyday person could take stunning photos.

Wouldn't people be pissed off if Patrick Mahomes decided to compete against armatures in a QB challenge and then bitched that there was no prize money for winning?

Regardless if the entrant is professional or amateur, Apple is a shameless cheapskate. This is a contest—not an exhibition. It's an undenied promotional stunt for the iPhone, and people should be compensated for their property's use in advertising. If not, it should be a promotion for photography itself, inviting photos taken with any hardware.

Apple should further categorize the entries. There should be one prize for professionals, and another for amateurs. Those who want to compete among pros should receive licensing compensation for any use and a substantial prize for winning. Amateurs can compete among themselves for an Apple product and fleeting attention. This approach will satisfy pros expectations while encouraging amateurs who might think their chances are slim.

exactly, it's a contest that clearly stated the prize for winning was to be featured as part of the campaign. It didn't say to be featured as part of the campaign with compensation....don't like the rules, don't play the game.

The problem is that most photos aren't stunning. They can be properly focused and well exposed and still be boring as Hell. When Joe Amateur posts an occasional photo on Instagram or Facebook that is noteworthy, typically it is the exception. There may not be a large enough pool of these examples to count on. If the pics have been shared on social media already, their re-use may be limited by those sites. Apple improves its chances of receiving quality photos if it includes professionals.
