Apple's plastic bags are icons in themselves! I have a collection of about 4 now. Totally understandable change though and I'm looking forward to seeing the new design. Obviously it'll be a paper bag with an Apple logo on the side, but they might do something cool who knows.

My first 'real' job through high-school was bagging at a grocery store. Back then we used paper bags, which not all that long after became environmentally unfriendly. Save the trees! Now plastic is environmentally unfriendly and we're headed back to the trees. (IMO, a good move with proper forest management.) But, we're also trying to kill the trees by lowering CO2. And my VW is spewing real pollutants because Europe pushed to lower CO2. Can we please just actually *think* this stuff through and try to get it right the first time, rather than all the junk-science and propaganda? Please?

Yet planned obsolescence in Apple computers today sends machines to the landfill quicker than ever before. Oh the sweet sweet nectar of irony...
Apple system have a better resale value than any other brand of computer. So they tend not to be trashed and remain in service longer than most. Just check e-bay.

I've always used my Apple reusable grocery bag.

I got a 4th gen AppleTV, and there was so much needless plastic wrap, I was stunned.

They even covered the Apple icon on the things with more plastic wrap.

But, gosh, the bags will make a WHOLE TON IF DIFFERENCE... Yeppers...

Where did you get that? Awesome...

If Apple really wanted to leave the world a better place, first and foremost they'd revisit their product launch distribution process. It currently relies far too heavily on fuel hungry cargo planes to deliver from China around the globe to meet an arbitrary self imposed deadline.

Constantly refueling planes to fuel consumer greed and promote materialism is no way to run an environmentally conscious company.

Wouldn't it just be better to have more environmentally friendly airplanes instead?

But, we're also trying to kill the trees by lowering CO2

This is a very silly statement.

Of course not. The "parties of science" are usually the most anti-science.

Here in England a carrier bag has cost 5p since October (rightly so), and elsewhere in the UK the charge has been in for longer. I think a lot of other countries also charge for bags (Canada, Australia etc), hopefully this is Apple driving change in the USA and elsewhere.

Why? Charging for bags doesn't help the environment or discourage people from using bags. It's just another racket.

Not really. Now that CO2 levels are up, ever so slightly, vegetation is also up worldwide. Climate change scaremongers neglect that nature has ways of dealing with elevated carbon levels, and that we are nowhere near the temperature or carbon levels we had when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Yet somehow Earth survived.

Government is nothing but a big racket. The politically connected profit from it. That's why it will be passed eventually.

The plastic bag is cool, I have plenty of them at home but the paper bag is recyclable and as they're committed to help the environment that's the right thing to do.

Actually a lot of people re-use them or buy hemp bags. Not only that but the profits from the sale of them are donated to charities.

Original quote specifically referred to "San Antonio" in Texas. Now, unless there is more than one San Antonio in Texas, let me know.
Wow, I guess you assumed I live in San Antonio (my original quote never said I did). Perhaps if you would take the time to read the print below my avatar, you would know that I don't live there. I was talking about people who think there is nothing below San Antonio.

No need for you wise words, we all know there isn't more than one.

I love to see liberalism eat itself. One day paper is evil and we're going to kill all the trees and destroy the planet. Use something else!! So we move to plastic. The next day plastic is evil and will destroy the planet (global warming BS). Quick, go back to paper!! Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Now, step back and engage brain: Both plastic and paper are recyclable. From a logical point of view, I do prefer the paper option, as "sustainable forests" (and tree farms) have been in use by the timber industry for decades (duh), and at least paper will biodegrade since many people carelessly toss the bags in the trash instead of the recycle bin. On the other hand, the plastic bags are stronger, and some folks (like me) don't put them in the trash.

It's actually proved quite successful. Tesco, the UKs largest grocery retailer has stated plastic bag usage is down 80% already as people opt for reusable bags or are recycling traditional carrier bags. They've also raised and donated nearly £12m to charities through the 5p charge in England in a around six months. That's just 1 retailer.

I'll be re-using my Apple plastic bags as long as possible. Paper bags are great for the environment, but tend to not be as re-usable/durable. I won't leave the Apple Store without a bag- I'd rather keep muggers guessing as to what I might have, instead of openly carrying a new iPad or MacBook out of the store without a bag.

It would be far-better if Apple had a purpose-built heavy-duty reusable bag like most retailers do.

At my college bookstore, many many years ago. They had an Apple event and were giving away goodies.
