I still make iTunes purchases from time-to-time on my 2006 iMac running OS X 10.8.5. Shouldn't be a problem as long as this is just referring to changing payment info.

Gotta love that ecosystem/forced obsolescence

Yah, please don't spread FUD. And by the way, you're working for free from now on, because that's what you expect Apple to do.

They have limited the obsolescence to *changing payment info* only, for security reasons, which can be done on any newer device. iTunes continues to function in every other way on these older devices. We use iTunes on our 2007 Mac mini daily and it works great.

I am surprised by the 2-day notice Apple gave, though.

You're fine. El Capitan is OS X 10.11. This applies to OS X 10.8.5 or earlier.

And yes, if you were running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, you would not be able to "purchase" anything, even for $0.00 (Apple considers free apps to be "purchases," even though no money changes hands.)

In the case of Mac Mini, this would affect the Mid-2007 and older models. Every Mini built since then can run at least El Capitan.

Thanks for the message, in all honestly, I hope I don’t need$ to purchase anything else from Apple again.

You really need a phased plasma Mac in the 40 watt range, to compete your set

who is still running ios 4 and for what reason?
I have a hardtime believing the hardware itself is still functioning

Maximum OS on my 2nd Gen iPod Touch, still going strong!

It hasn't had a whiff of being near the internet in years though.

It's not forced obsolesce. You guys want less bloat in new versions of iTunes, then you gotta stop support of legacy versions of it. This is 100% the norm in software development. You can't have backwards compatibility forever.
This is not an update of iTunes and iTunes will still work and you can still make a purchases in iTunes & App Store using those older versions of iOS, Mac OS and AppleTV.

Can you not just download a modern web browser that still runs on those operating systems (like Chrome or Firefox) and just update the payment info on the website?

I'm surprised how so few people reading this article seem to realize that this only affects updating your payment info, not using the service itself. Like you said, updating your payment info can be done using a Web browser—it doesn't have to be done within the iTunes Store app for that device.

Stop the conspiracy theory whining. All companies must stop using TLS 1.0 by June 30 to meet PCI-DSS standards.

These will be the TLS 1.0 OS versions.

Apple are doing what all the large card processors are doing.

That's fine, but it's still Apple's choice to NOT upgrade the SSL framework on older Mac OS versions to continue supporting their store with TLS v1.2. The directive is from industry and congress, but this is still Apple's decision.

No, you can't. I have 10.7.5 installed and tried to make a purchase in the App store. My transaction is being blocked because Apple said I cannot update my payment information (which is still correct and current in 10.12 under the same account).

Like I said, this is simply not true.

Apple is blocking my transactions even though I have already updated my payment information (via their website or the App Store/iTunes on a newer machine with 10.12).
