But bottom line 2G owners have no basis to complain. The release of 3.0 will not "break" their phone. Owners can continue to use it, jailbreak it, unlock it, sell it, use it as a Touch, a VoiP phone, whatever. Any 2G owner that starts screaming if 3.0 doesn't work might as well wear a shirt that says "I'm a self-entitled brat." Feature improvements wait for no one.

2G phones were sold as a platform with the promise of upgrades/feature improvements. Sort of like a looseleaf service, with occasional updates. A two year term from purchase as late as June '08. 2G owners will have no right to complain about hardware features/improvements, but software/application updates should be able to run on 2G--either 3.0 inself, or an emulation.

it is interesting to witness the computer/phone merger....at somepoint in the near future phones will start to affect notebook sales

This will indeed be interesting to see. For me I'm already at this point. My current computer is an original MacBook which I got because I liked the portability. For my limited mobile tasks - music, video, web, email - my iPhone is more than capable.

There are a few things I'd miss but it's got to the stage where I'd go iMac + iPhone rather than a notebook now.

My 13-year-old will think he's died and gone to heaven if I "repurpose" my 2G as a touch for him. :D Here's to hoping that Apple releases some new hardware that "forces" me to do it!

I'm really hoping this is not the case for 3.0. As great as the UI is, the OS is just so bloated for a mobile device. Why do you need a full-blown OS on a mobile phone; how much RAM and processing power does it use just so the iPhone looks pretty? I groan everytime I am doing nothing but using the iPod and there is a good 3 second lag switching screens from currently playing to current playlist to all playlists. Then there's the inexplicable lag in the SMS app. And you can just forget about holding the backspace key to delete text unless you want it to delete everything you've typed - or you just like to amuse yourself at guessing where the cursor will finally stop.

I hate the backspace key bug. It happens mostly when I'm posting on MacRumors, I'll press it for just a second and suddenly it goes on a deleting rampage and erases half of my message. I hate starting over. Grrrrrr.

I'd be happy with..
  • Push notification service
  • Better quality camera with flash
  • Increased storage (32GB)
  • Nike+ integration.
  • Wi-Fi syncing with iTunes

Using the March 6th 2008 Event as a guide, I guess that Schiller and Forstall will do the heavy lifting.
They'll demo what's coming in 3.0 with the new SDK features, and announce that it'll be available in June.

next version iphone annouced wwdc 2nd week of june, 3.0 software and new iphone launched early july-just in time for steve to present the launch :)-just a thought:D

I'm excited for another giant let-down! WOOHOO!

Apple: Over-promise, under-deliver!

yes but that's our fault because we want everything now and then of course it doesn't work ! I prefert to wait and have something working fine out of the box

Spaz: I just tried it out, seemed to be fine. I'll keep trying later. I mean I'm not into finding bugs or making them 'work' but it would be neat to see what the problem is.

Also, I would like to add voice-dialing to my list. I want to be able to click the headphone thing in some way, say a name and be connected. Ever walked when it was snowing and had to make a call? You not only have to touch the screen, you have to pull your gloves off! Torture I say.

Try it while responding to a MacRumors post. I don't know... it just happens. I see it all the time.

This is hilarious. You want a 32 gb device, but you want syncing over WiFi...

What kind of Wifi do You have? Something no one else has apparently.

I'd like to watch you sit there, after getting what you wish for, and watch your 32 gb device backup wirelessly to iTunes.

LOLOLOLOL

Yeah, that's really hilarious. Open your mind...

I have a 60GB music library that rotates based on a very smart playlist sync'ed to my 8GB 1st Gen iPhone. After a first sync with the dock, I'd love to just walk into my house and have the few MB of photos, app updates, and songs based on my smart playlist update themselves over WiFi automatically. There's been rumors of this happening over MobileMe on-the-fly, surely it could be done on my own local WiFi when in range.

Exactly.

I found lftrghtparadigm's reply rude :p

I left feedback to apple a while back to have the UI freely revolve to the first page forwards or backwards and not having it be like a book right now that if I want to go to the last page I don't have to flick my finger across 8 times from the home page. Hope this is a fix too.

i don't think anyone has ever called iphone os "full os x". that would have been an outright lie. if we had "full os x" there would not be need for separate sdk's. the osx programs would run on iphone after a simple recompilation, some might need a little ui touch up to enhance the user experience on small touch display, but that's all.

Well of course they have different SDKs, they are two different operating systems. They have different user interfaces, and the iPhone has to have a set resolution. The language is also a bit different thus the need for two different SDKs. Apple doesn't want people to think that the power of the iPhone is limited because it is a stripped down version of OS X. The other SDK just adds support for Cocoa Touch and all of the user interface elements of the iPhone.

I thought this up a while ago and thought it would be cool... implement up and down-swipes on the springboard to bring you to user-configurable pages. For example, up-swipe could bring you to the phone dialpad, and down-swipe could bring you to a new text message.

BT stereo headsets

I hope they finally do more with BT, like being able to send file's to other devices and recieve them of course and being able to connect a stereo headset via BT , thats what i'm hoping for.

MMS, lol,i never ever get one from anybody , i'm sort of surprised so many people want that functionality or better yet use it, email does a much better job for this function, and if those people just email me the picture form there phone instead of mms then the quality is much better, but hey there phone probably does not support that functionality and i sure don't want apple to back in time to meet the older phones limitations ;-).

Copy Paste? Never mist it either.

Lets hope they come up with something that nobody expected ;-).

Can someone please explain to me why the iPhone's OS has to be resolution independent? Why can't they just do what they do for the current Mac OS X. The interface, is designed to fit the screen resolution.

Just hold delete for about a second and it will keep going after you let go. (I've only seen it happen in Safari so far).

I've seen it in notes too. But I think only with 2.0.1.

It does often happen in safari though (OS 2.1 for me.).

will the iphone update affect ipods?
I have been thinking in buying myself and ipod touch and I was going to do it this weekend but now I am afraid to buy one and 2 weeks later there is a new one (even if I end up buying the current version, i'd rather get a discounted ipod which I assume will be if a new one comes along. Any thougthts?
