The article isn’t entirely clear… I bought a new iPad a few weeks ago and have a free one-year trial that needs to be activated before the end of August. Can I still wait until then to activate it, or do I need to activate it before July now?
No since in waiting. I believe the clock starts on the purchase date. If I wrong, I apologize. Taking several meds that leave my mind fuzzy. MR is helping keep me distracted (somewhat) from the pain.

A bit more on Masters of the Air, it’s AppleTV+ first production. Everything to date has been third party studios. So I’d say this is a BFD for Apple (there’s suggestion it will be called ‘The Mighty Eighth’). It’s also being suggested it may be the most expensive Tv production ever (when band of brothers came out on HBO it was the most expensive at that time). More belie

Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg are bringing the third series in its Band of Brothers franchise to Apple TV+, which will highlight the American bomber crews who fought the air war over Nazi Germany during World War II, according to Deadline.

Based on the 2007 book Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, the series will focus on the enlisted men of the Eighth Air Force, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Fighting at 25,000 feet in thin, freezing air that no warriors had ever encountered before, bomber crews battled new kinds of assaults on body and mind,” reads a description of the book

Air combat was deadly but intermittent: periods of inactivity and anxiety were followed by short bursts of fire and fear. Unlike infantrymen, bomber boys slept on clean sheets, drank beer in local pubs, and danced to the swing music of Glenn Miller's Air Force band, which toured US air bases in England. But they had a much greater chance of dying than ground soldiers.”

From May 1942 to July 1945, the “Mighty Eighth” planned and executed hundreds of thousands of daytime bombing campaigns, though it suffered a heavy price: More than 26,000 Army airmen and 5,100 aircraft were lost, according to a service history.

According to Apple's terms and conditions, it seems to be based on when you activate the device, not necessarily when you redeem the free trial offer — although you do have to redeem it within three months of device activation:

  • Eligible devices activated July 1, 2021 or later will qualify for offers of 3 months free Apple TV+, while those activated on June 30, 2021 or earlier will qualify for offers of 1 year free Apple TV+.
  • Offer must be claimed in the Apple TV app within 3 months after first setting up your new device. To see the offer appear, you will need to sign in with your Apple ID on your new device.

sorry to hear that Apple_Robert. Best of luck working through it…

Looks like no more extension of free trial :(. Will have to start paying soon.

See the Cupertino trolls are here downvoting everyone but the facts are:

Tim announced Apple TV+ would always be available for one year upon purchase of a qualifying device, rolling and forever.

Apple reneged on that but…

New devices will always have a year’s free trial of aTV+

Apple has now reneged on that.

Not sure how facts can be disagreed with?

When did he say that?

It seemed like an obvious way to get to an audience which already have a lot of superior options available, while building a catalogue... but one year is a very long trial. Not only do you lose revenue for a long time, but with Apple's very shallow back catalogue they also risk the viewers having seen all of the content.

They don't have the delivery rate or back catalogue of HBO, Netflix and Disney+ so unlike on these, it easily possible to have seen everything on Apple TV+ and not have something that is coming right now.

FWIW, my experience is that the quality is also below the competition - I enjoyed Mythic Quest, but I'm not going to put it in the HBO Silicon Valley league, to give one obvious example. The rest has been "meh".

The TV app consolidates content from other apps, both from Apple (tv+ and itunes) and third parties. For example, Disney+ shows appear in the TV app but you wouldn’t expect to get those shows free with an tv+ subscription.
No, but I would like to be able to filter the TV app to only show and recommend stuff that I'm already paying for.

so howbout preordered a new ipad pro m1 on may and still waiting it to be procedured for shipping? if they send it to me after 1.7. then i can only subscribe 3months?

I love Apple TV! I have the top tier of apple one, and my wife and I use it all extensively, even arcade😉 bout time they get rid of the freeloaders! They should also limit content for those that buy and leave in a month! Easy to weed them out by Apple ID

The one thing that I hate is that I lose access to TV or Music instantly when I want to cancel my subscription. I have the trial and am enjoying it but it would be good if I had been able to cancel my subscription to avoid auto renewal by the end of my trial next year.

How difficult is it to set a reminder in your calendar?

That is the way to get people pay accidentally, when they dont remember to cancel it during the right day.

Can't believe I missed out on this. According to support, I needed to have activated it within three months of my MacBook Pro's purchased. With all the useless notifications macOS likes to pop up, one of them could be a nagging one saying, hey, you have a free 1 year trial of Apple TV+ waiting for you.

Not very difficult. You can either use siri and say "Hey siri, make reminder for June 18th 2022 to cancel apple tv subscription" or you open the calender app on your mac or iphone (I'll just assume that you own either or both of these, of course it's different on android and windows), click the day in your calendar and enter your reminder. You can tell the app to notify you in advance or on the day of the actual event/reminder. Pretty basic -but still neat - stuff.

My current subscription ends on 7/1 and been using the AppleTv4 1080p, and just ordered the 4K (older model) at Walmart.com for $99… should I

1) cancel my current AppleTV+ on say 6/29 and activate the 4K unit I just bought on 6/30 using the SAME AppleID

Or

2) cancel the current AppleTV+ on the old device on 6/29 (not 6/30 to be safe the cancellation is effective and no recurring billing starts) and activate the 4K unit using. DIFFERENT AppleID?

I’m wondering if the free year of AppleTV+ will work on my existing AppleTV logon or is a one-time
Only thing. I suspect no one knows yet?

It’s a one-time only trial per family sharing group/Apple ID. See footnote 2 here:

“One subscription per Family Sharing group. Plan automatically renews until cancelled.”

You will not be able to activate the free trial on the same Apple ID. Apple’s terms and conditions are very clear on this:

Only one offer per Family, regardless of number of devices purchased.

That said, Apple also says that it’s one offer per family, yet some on this thread have reported that they’ve been able to get another trial by using a different Apple ID in the same family sharing group, as long as the original family subscription has been cancelled first. This isn’t supposed to work, but YMMV.

If you use a completely different Apple ID, not associated with the original one, you should be able to redeem the offer. You may need to ensure that this is the Apple ID you initially activate your new Apple TV with in order to qualify, however, and of course you’ll need to switch to this Apple ID whenever you want to watch Apple TV+. This is fairly easy to do on the Apple TV, but it’s more of a pain on the iPhone and iPad.

Thanks for detailing the scenario. I don’t watch AppleTV+ on anything other than the AppleTV4 so a different AppleID on the new device should be no issue. The Disney+ app won’t let me select any profile to logon and use it on my old AppleTV anyway; I’ve deleted the app and reinstalled and it doesn’t change that. I’m wondering if the reason is my ATV4 is on an older iOS (it’s jailbroken). I’ve had to use the Disney+ integrated in my SonyTV instead of the ATV4 (which isn’t 4K anyway either).

One other thing I just thought of.. I’ll lose the ability to ‘remote control’ (ie use my iPhone character set keyboard to type to the AppleTV) won’t I by using a different AppleTV to register? Or maybe after canceling the original plan on the original ID and then adding the new iD to the family I’d regain that ability?
