wow this is very very lame new for the ipod..lol makes me think no iphone 5 redesign either..lool in which case apple will have problems [/B][/B]

Actually I would say a redesigned iPhone leans towards the reason for the iPod touch only receiving minor updates, and not wanting the touch to take any spotlight off the iPhone.

Hmmm... Fragmentation because of different resolutions? I think the iPod touch will have the same resolution screen as the iPhone. One might argue that the iPhone WILL have the same resolution, just a bigger screen. Well then if the iPhone's screen is larger and has the same resolution and the iPod touch screen stays at 3.5 inches, the iPod touch then has a higher PPI rating than the iPhone. Would Apple do that to the iPhone? I expect them to have the same size screen. It's the only way that makes sense to me...

Sure if they will do that unlocked. But that word- unlocked- and an iPod-like price of $299 would be quite a big, BIG change for the iPhone sales strategy. If they can get an iPhone 4 down to iPod prices and have it unlocked, do they really need to even have iPods anymore?

Price.
iPod nano: $99
iPod touch: $199
iPhone: $299

isnt that an iPhone?

3rd generation.

Apple doesn't update their products very dramatically when there isn't any competition.

iPod Touch needs the 128GB capacity (otherwise we are going on 3 years of 64GB capacity) and the nano is way way overdue for 32GB (Even with my favorite songs 16GB doesn't work unless I convert the songs to a crappy 128kbps).

Though I don't think either is going to happen to be honest, they want to make sales on the iCloud, I mean why bother updating capacities when you can get money yearly out of people?

Last year when the iPT4 came out it was the king, this year it will be the pawn. Apple, at least... AT LEAST put 512MB of RAM in it.

I love my iPod Touch 4 but it does NOT have enough RAM.

No, just like an iPad 3G isn't an iPhone. An iPhone has a lot more to differentiate it than just 3G. An iPod with a iPad-like 3G data option(s) is still far from an iPhone.

And I predict it's only a matter of time- probably a short time- until Macbooks are coming with 3G modems or modem options. When that happens, they won't be iPhones either.

I completely agree here. Every since real multitasking came along, these iDevices are starved for enough ram to really support it. Personally, I don't even think 512 is enough. And ram being as cheap as it is, it would be a great way to enhance the usefulness of a next generation by jacking that up... perhaps more than just a double.

I agree. This is why we need real competition not lawsuits. Apple are like a little child, their latest toy is the best thing in the world until something new comes along and they loose interest, leaving a lot of disappointed users in their wake.

I don't want an iPod Touch that is a poor mans iPhone or stripped down iPhone capable of making calls. If you want a phone then buy a freaking phone. Buy the iPhone. The iPod Touch is a portable media player.

Personally I would scrap the iPod Touch and replace with a new product (call it the iPlay) to bridge the gap between the iPhone and the iPad. That way you could also rebrand the iPod Nano as the "new" default iPod - taking it back to it's roots as a small, light portable music player with the 5-6" iPlay as more of a portable games device to compete with the likes of the PS Vita.

That would reinvigorate the iPod/iPlay brand and reverse the sales decline. A lot of iPhone users also have an iPad so why wouldn't they also buy an iPlay. At the moment if you have an iPhone why would you also buy an iPod Touch? Answer is you probably wouldn't.

So many rumors here over the past few months. Why does everyone think this is so substantial.Hopefully this is just rubbish. Why bother to sell almost the same product a year later in a different color.Has Apple really underestimated its followers who will not accept this.

I hate peas...

What a load of ****! Apple should not be charging anything like they do for miniscule memory. Even offering an 8gb model in this day and age for a device that size is a piss take. A max of 64gb - are you kidding me? And for nearly double the price! They should be out in 100gb - 200gb - 300gb options and have at least an 8mp camera!

I wish MacRumors have an age restriction so that people under the age of 10 can't join the forums.

Shhhs. Don't say that out loud - we don't want the advertisers to realize that many of the new members are under the age of [consent, drinking, sex, voting, driving, babysitting, ...whatever].

This is a genuine part!

I can confirm this is a fully white facia (not a sticker!), the air bubble you see is the factory fitted screen protector. The reason the button is black is because the customer requested it to be and the white buttons are still in transit but due to arrive soon. Please refrain from simply just labelling things as fake if you haven't actually seen one or requested detailed photos etc

Very disappointed :(

I'm entering the "magical" world of iOS development and was planning to buy an iDevice. That and my ~7 year old nano just died. I can't afford an iPhone, and I have a perfectly working awesome phone. I was anxiously waiting for an iPod Touch refresh. I was expecting a better camera and 3G. But well, I'll wait another year I guess

Well it'll be interesting to see how the ipod touch evolves, especially with it's overlap in functionality with the iphone.

I'd love to see it become a pocket computer (which it basically is), but maybe with a few more options. 3G like an ipad would be amazing, although I don't know if Apple would do that (too much overlap with the iphone?).

"Minor" updates... like what? I'm expecting increases to storage, maybe the camera, hopefully a newer chip. But I suspect that with it's upgrades, they'll still make the iphones better (even the "4GS"), to have differentiated tiers to their products. But man, a 3G ipod touch, I'd buy that in a second! Or a "cheaper" iphone model.

I was wondering if one of you guys can answer my question, because clearly at the store they're incompetent at answering such a simple question.

I was deciding on between getting an itouch 4G and an itouch 5G. Yes I understand that there are minor differences, but my point is that if it is the same price then why not wait for the new one.

My questions are:
- Do you believe they are going to be the same price? Or will the new itouch be more expensive or will the old itouch drop in price? I am just speaking about in past experiences with the old itouch.
- Is it worth waiting for the new itouch or just buy the old one now?

It's not incompetence, nor is it just a simple question - they probably don't know; if they do they aren't allowed to tell you for good reason. Do you need an answer that soon? You'll know in less than a month which I find isn't long to wait for a $200-$300 purchase.

Sorry I didn't mean that in a rude way. I was just frustrated because she was pretty rude when I had called to just ask from the start. I just thought there were general trends with Apple. Like generally iphones cost the same every year it comes out, so I was just wondering if the general trend was that the previous itouch would drop in price (reading it online) when the new itouch comes out. I would assume the store would know because it happens every year and if she didn't know the answer she could tell me, but she didn't try.

But thanks for answering. It's for a gift, so I need to make a decision to wait or get it.

How about GPS and the HDMI mirroring tech that's in the iPad 2?

I can't afford a $90/month smartphone plan- I consider my touch to be my "poor man's iPhone" I have WiFi @ home & work- so it really suits me pretty well! Just would love GPS.

People with young kids who's parents don't want to pay for a cell phone plan for them also make big use out of iPod Touches- I know several parents who have gone that route. So for Apple to kill the Touch and tell everyone to buy iPhones would be maddening.

I would like in the iPod Touch 5th Gen to add over 4th Gen:

GPS
HDMI video mirroring that's on iPad 2
better front facing camera for Skype
faster A5 of the iPad 2
more system memory
128 GB option

Most people might feel ho hum about this list, but it would make the device darn near perfect in my book.

What would be cool is for the iPod Touch and iPad to be joined by a 3rd device with a ~7 inch screen. All are pretty much the same device except for screen size and cell network technologies...
