I'm understanding Apple less and less these days. Sometimes they kill off beloved products because of their devotion to focusing only on the few things that matter most. And other times, we get news like this.

Given that Apple TV 4 owners already have Siri functionality in their remote, and given that Apple (finally!) updated tvOS to work with the Remote app, why on earth should Apple be wasting so much energy (conceivably for another six months plus) to add Siri functionality to said Remote app, which the vast majority of users only need for typing an occasional password?

Eddy, how about an ETA on that Universal Search API Apple promised months ago?

Because many people have their phone/Ipad with them, and not the remote.
Also, there is just one remote and well, probably more than one phone/Ipad/Watch in the house.

You know... The wife and I received a set of Waterford Crystal wine glasses for a wedding gift. We started with 4, and now we're down to 1 (yeah, I know, "Cool story, bro").

So the question is... Should I go back to the gifter and say, "How come you didn't include any silicon cases for these glasses." Or should I just learn to be more careful with my stuff? ;-)
If you plan to have the glasses in hand each time you sit to watch television and you're not careful then either you should consider asking or should buy some yourself. Ridiclious reply. How about I do the same so you can read nonsense too. You should remove the bumpers from your car and be more careful otherwise you would be silly.

And to think that there were conspiracy theorist that thought this was never going to happen.....wonder where they are now.....

I don't think Apple expected people to be that upset about the app not being compatible, so they quick-fixed it. Which could be why the updated app is so far from release. They're just starting to work on it now.

nonsense. please explain how its gotten dumber.

I have an example. I used to use Siri every day at work to add to an existing note throughout the day. We have to keep an activity log, which I would name as the current date. "Add to my December 9th note" then she would respond "what would you like to add?" Since iOS 9, this no longer functions this way from the lock screen. I have to open the note and use the dictation key to add to it.

I want an app for my laptop, I sit with a laptop so I would much rather drive from it than an iOS device.

Apparently the analogy was lost...

Why should Apple provide a cover? They don't supply covers for iPhones or iPads, but if you want protection for one, they are available for sale. Same goes for the ATV4 remote.

I suggested the cover because this is sold too as a gaming remote. The wrist strap helps but being a device that has the potential to be dropped or flung it would be nice if they did. They didn't, don't have too and I'm not upset they made the choice not to do so. I only suggest it because it would be nice as an option to protect something that is held and maybe dropped on a regular basis. I have bought at least two DirecTV remotes for each TV over the years because no matter how careful you are you will break it over time. No cover for those remotes but then again they're not made of glass.

I'm fine with the 3rd party options. I have bought covers for my other devices and understand none were included. It just surprises me a bit to read that someone would be put off buy the idea of getting more for your money. An HDMI cable is needed to use the device, its not included either. I simply feel the price charged and the bulk price they could get could cover the extra without a great hit to profit but that is my consumer side that wants a deal. My business side understands that not including these extras will go a long way in cost savings and increased profits. I would be including something that potentially would sit in the box unused because perhaps half of the users that receive these would have no interest in a remote cover. I get that but for the cost and benefit of those that would it could go a long way in satisfaction. As one of if not the most expensive streaming devices on the market it would be easy to add this extra. Thats all I'm saying. I'm not trying to offend anyone with my suggestion and more than anything was looking for a smile at the idea and had the Wii remote in mind when I thought about it.

Most people tend to think as consumers. You know, because that's what we are. Release then fix/update is not consumer friendly; from Apple or any other company. It's not like people were expecting some exotic functionality like smell-o-vision. The remote app was a basic part of the functionality of the ATV3. Having the remote app ready for the release of the ATV4 was not an unreasonable expectation.

Actually, that's a lie. The remote that came with the ATV3 was part of the functionality. The remote APP was a FREE perk that Apple never needed to give you in the first place. And since it's free, you're not a consumer, because you aren't PAYING for it. You PAID for and consumed the remote that came with the device, and if I recall, that worked just fine. Your version of "consumer friendly" means "gimme gimme gimme free stuff."

That's fairly obtuse, but everyone's entitled to their opinion.

The next big moan will be when the new remote app is launched and it doesn't control the volume on the TV. WTF Apple! I'm sending my aTV back ;)

Apps are too tough to make if it takes APPLE 6 months to put together a remote app for a product that must have been in the pipeline for years.

Well, I think we could agree that it would be nice. It was your idea and I like it.

I'd like someone with Plex experience to help me out with a question because it looks interesting, and my current Remote app isn't connecting to my Homeshare-enabled Mac Mini (the "source" for all my movies). I have an AppleTV 3rd gen and it connects to my Mac just fine, but the interface is clunky and slow to scroll down a long list of movies. I understand I can not get a Plex app on my 3rd gen ATV. However, can I run a Plex server on my Mac Mini, download a Plex app to my phone and use that to Airplay my content to my AppleTV? I know this sounds like a lot of work to do what my AppleTV already does, but I'm just primarily interested in a better interface to browse and play my content.

You can get a Plex client running on the aTV3, but it needs a service called PlexConnect running on your Mac (can be the same one you run the Plex Media Server (PMS) on). It's basically a small DNS/Web Server that redirects traffic from a specific app (you can choose a number to hijack) on the aTV to the PMS leaving everything else alone. I used if for well over a year and it was a great solution on the aTV3. You can even replace the icon of the app with a Plex one, although you can change the app name. Check out the Plex Support forums, as there is a group on there with all the info. you'll need.

You can use the Plex iOS app to Airplay to the aTV3, but I didn't use this I had a jailbroken aTV2 and then an aTV3 running with PlexConnect. The Plex client on the aTV4 takes all that hassle away :D

"What we’ve found is that a little over half of transactions are coming from people upgrading from the last Apple TV and just about the other half are coming from new customers that are buying their first Apple TV.”

Well if 50% are upgrade customers isn't it obvious the other 50% are new customers ?????

Wow cool, I'll look into PlexConnect. Thanks!

Any my wife already dropped my new Apple TV remote and the pad shattered (still usable). They want $79 for a new remote, I would be better off buying a new AppleTv for $149 and having a spare. Cant believe the remote cost half of a new AppleTv.

That its why I bought a Remote Loop the first day with the new Apple TV.
