I wish people would stop complaining about Apple going thin. I for one appreciate the work that goes into devices that are easier to use because of their lightness and thinness. I went from a 2008 MacBook Air to a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina and the Macbook Pro is so much heavier, its almost a chore to pickup compared to the MBA. Ok you pay a price for the power of the rMBP, but my next laptop will be an Air I think

Glad you said this. People think the MacBook Pro is 'approaching the thinness of an air' fail to grasp that if you can fit Pro specs in a laptop that thin, the Consumer laptop can be made even thinner, too.

If Apple uses the M chip from Intel, then they can announce this year. But that is a step down from the U series they currently use.

However, the M series is a fanless chip, and that does jive with the other rumors. Plus it uses less power, which would allow Apple to put a retina screen in the Air and not sacrifice its long batter life.

This also would keep it distinguished from the Pro, because as of now the two are fairly close (especially once the Air gets Retina).

Either way I am very interested to see this laptop. I have always loved the Air line, but the early generations were plagued with various problems (screen line issue anyone?), but the redesigned generations since 2010 were fantastic and got better and better.

The only reason I switched from my 2010 model to the rMBP was that I was not willing to upgrade without a good screen. Even if Apple had put an IPS display in the Air I probably would have stayed, but the other advantages of the rMBP won out. I greatly miss the wedge design however.

I wonder if apple will even add a SIM card slot to any laptops soon?!

That would be an AWSOME feature!

I think the issue is that, at least with the 13" MBPs, "Pro specs" is pushing it.

I don't see why Apple have refused to allow the Pro to be truly "Pro" for so many years now, instead insisting that it must slim down as much as possible and sacrifice specs in the process.

I always complain about thinness of iPhones, but I think there is room for improvement of rMBP
The ultimate laptop would be an Air with retina display and PRO specs.

Current Air 13'' has a fantastic battery life, is really light and has a wonderful form factor. Add a retina display and you're done

So the current MacBook Pros are already very thin. The MacBook Airs have been rocking the same design for many years, and are thin. Now they want to launch another category?

And it doesn't help that the specs of all them could blend.

I think the priority should be a brand new retina MacBook Air with a new thinner design.

What I think you said in bold is exactly what the I think new thinner Macbook will be: a redesigned MacBook Air with retina display, and not a new category of MacBook as previously thought.

Based on how long the current MBA has had it's design, it's due time for a redesign on the MBA. And when Macs get redesigned, they almost always get thinner and smaller.

Can buttonless keyboards deliver any sort of physical feedback to the user?
If not, Mr. User Experience will be crying "Et tu, Brute?".

Regarding thinness, it's always nice to have a lighter/slimmer laptop, but what would really make my vajayjay tingle would be reducing that huge bezel on the MBA.
Get rid of half of their thickness, use that space to increase the display size and I'll be a happy man.

Omg! I would p on myself if the MacBookPros come that thin and a boosted performance with Broadwell chips!!!!

I hope they announce them soon, i've been holding off buying a Macbook Air (I've still got a 2011 Macbook pro) for university, the portability and battery life make it a brilliant laptop to commute with and take to lectures. However i'm holding out until Apple update to a retina MBA.

Broadwell Y is probably not going to happen, they're not quite powerful enough especially when they need to push enough pixel for a retina display. Might be fine for a tablet-like device with a specially designed OS for it even with hi-dpi screen but with OS X, I don't think so.

The Broadwell U is scheduled for late 2014 / early 2015 so right in time for a new MBA.

That's interesting, so I guess it's a good tiem to look at Broadwell chips again? And it does beg the question of when the new design, if it happens, will be extended to the other models.

Well, they can't get thinner than the ports.

This would be a great chance to introduce the rumoured proprietary Beats headphone port, which obviously could be as thin as the Lightning port.

I wouldn't be surprised to also see a thinner Thunderbolt port introduced at some point, not necessarily faster 3.0, just a redesign.

Or maybe they'd combine it into one smart port on each side, potentially reversible ie audio/video/lighting/thunderbolt, depending on what you plug in.

And obviously a slew of 'adapters' for USB etc released in tow.

Other than that if it's an Air, I'd love to see a thinner bezel. If they reduce the bezel on the 11" they could basically release a 12" in the form factor of the 11 with retina and that's good to go imo.

The Macbook Air is thin enough. Even the Macbook Pro's are thin enough as they are now. How much thinner of a laptop do we need?? More function over form please.

I've got a Macbook Air, and i've got a retina Macbook Pro, i don't want Retina,i have performance issues when using a retina screen, same remote Mac Mini, use my Air to VNC/Remote its smooth and responsive, use the retina, laggy, slow, not usable. Same issue with 2X connecting to MS RDP, the non retina Air great, retina pro, slow laggy. Im guessing its the scaling that causes it? The Air's screen is sharper and has a better resolution than any other laptop i have ever owned (air was my first mac), I'm more than happy with this.

It can only be as thin as it's thickest ports, so it will be interesting to see how Apple handles that if they want to make it even thinner.

When the retina came out I called what I still feel will happen. We will see the return to two laptop lines. The MacBook and MacBookPro.

The Airs will become simply MacBook and the rMBP will just be MacBookPro.
