Apple will discontinue the iPhone 5c next year, according to Taiwan's Industrial and Commercial Times. Production of the handset is said to be stopping in the middle of the year, as Apple suppliers Wistron and Foxconn will look to wind down production of the device. The news follows a report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this week which noted that production of the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 4S would end later in 2015 after promotional plans.

Originally released as a lower-cost option last year, the iPhone 5c is currently available in a single 8GB configuration alongside the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. It is likely that Apple will stop production of the iPhone 5c to streamline its iPhone lineup, as every handset would then likely be equipped with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Apple's iPhone 5c saw lower-than-expected sales after its debut in 2013 due to high demand for the then-flagship iPhone 5s. Apple did attempt a renewed push late last year to promote the iPhone 5c, debuting ads for the device on popular blogging platform Tumblr and on websites like Yahoo.com. Other reports also suggested that Apple cut iPhone 5c production significantly while ramping up iPhone 5s production to meet customer demand last year.

I've only ever seen two of these since they were released. I've already seen two iPhone 6s.

Funny how we regard the 5C as a flop, next to the 5S..

But the 6+ as a success, next to the 6.

The sales ratios are the same for each.

I have to say, I'm disappointed. I loved my 5c, and if it weren't for the larger form factor of the 6 plus, I'd still be rocking with it.

Captain Obvious strikes... the 5C will be 2 years old, and three generations behind next year.

Now, what might convince me about these "analysts" is if they could tell us what the successor to the 5c will look like.

I hope they continue to provide an option in this price range, be it plastic or not.

I see teenagers with them and think they're a great phone for them that doesn't cost much. Would give this to my teenager son/daughter eventually.

It's a nice little phone. My 70 year old dad has one and likes it. It's more than enough than what he needs from a smartphone.

That said, I've never really understood the point of it. I guess he saved 100 bucks on it, but in thei length of a single 2 year contract, that really isn't a lot of money.

Probably the 5S/6 in a plastic shell. If they offered an iPhone 6C, with the iP6 specs/screen size in the 5C's durable plastic, I think that'd be a lovely phone.

The 5C wasn't a flop either. It outsold many other phones In the winter quarter this year.

I think it's because Apple initially expected to sell more of the 5C and overproduced them but didn't expect the 6+ to be as popular and didn't make enough of them.

since the iphone 4s and iphone 5 will not be sold anymore in 2015, is obvious that even the iphone 5c will be not

Or even too lovely for Apple's (CFO's) liking.. I think realistically a 5S clothed in a plastic shell may keep everyone just happy enough to make it real. The 5S is no slouch, so won't fall too far behind for another couple of years - for the market segment that the c-series targets.

Really? i see them everywhere.
I have one, my sister has one, my niece has one, two of my mates have them.

One the other hand i don't think i've ever see a windows phone outside of a phone shop.

Not surprising since it's going to be getting pretty old. Hopefully they replace it with a 6C that also has the 4" screen.

True. It was just a little too expensive IMHO. I know Apple always offer last year's iPhone specs for $100 less than the new flagship so it's nothing new ... nonetheless the build quality, durability and colours make it really appealing. If they just made it a little less expensive I think it'd have sold like hotcakes.

It's a shame because I'm sure the 5C is considerably cheaper to manufacture compared to the 5 (so only $100 cheaper is a little stingy), and at more competitive pricing it really could have taken off.

So basically Apple will be stopping production of 4" devices and most likely will replace the 5C with a 4.7" version. I would be surprised if the 5s sticks around next year too.

Agreed, that would be a great idea. I wish they offered a 4" iPhone with the A8 chip though. I wouldn't personally buy it as I prefer the size of the 6, but it seems a bit of a fob-off to no longer offer the latest specs in a smaller screen size -- especially after Apple kept banging on about one-handed usability for years.
