Several of my friends have these - non phone nerds that just got them as free upgrades on their contracts.

I never saw the 5c as cheap enough to have a purpose - not cheap enough to battle cheap Androids so most elected to pay a bit more and go 5s.

I would consider buying one if you could still get a 32gb model. a £699 iPhone 6 is just excessive for my needs.

Really? i see them everywhere.
I have one, my sister has one, my niece has one, two of my mates have them.

One the other hand i don't think i've ever see a windows phone outside of a phone shop.

Yep I've seen a lot of 5c's where I work and in my social circles. I think it was always more of a long tail product and if Apple is ending it it's probably more because they're done with 4" screens than anything else.

Expected, it's really an iPhone 5 in a different case. And the iPhone 5 CPU seems ready to abandon in 2015. If they do this and introduce a "6C" as a replacement with the 5S CPU, they'll be back at where they are now with three tiers, just on a new generation: 6C, 6 / 6 Plus, and the new 6S model(s).

Great news.
The 5c is not worth having the Apple logo and brand on.
The cheapest and ugliest iPhone ever made.
Die 5c!

It's a nice little phone. My 70 year old dad has one and likes it. It's more than enough than what he needs from a smartphone.

That said, I've never really understood the point of it. I guess he saved 100 bucks on it, but in thei length of a single 2 year contract, that really isn't a lot of money.

This "nice little phone" was once the flagship iPhone. Amazing how wrapping something in colorful plastic changes people's impressions of it. :)

Of course they're killing it, and the 5s won't be far behind. No NFC, and Apple Pay is going to be a cash cow for them.

I never thought of the iPhone 5C as a new iPhone, it was just the iPhone 5 with a different design.

I am curious if the iPhone 5 would have sold more or less if Apple just stuck it in the $99 on-contract spot.

This is kind of surprising. I thought Apple would keep the 5c around another year and maybe offer a 4GB version

i saw a story somewhere about a great deal on 2 gig chips if bought in bulk.

Funny how we regard the 5C as a flop, next to the 5S..

But the 6+ as a success, next to the 6.

The sales ratios are the same for each.

seriously?

or it could be the fact its far to expensive for how long ago it was the flagship.

that said with sane prices and ipod touch colors instead of the hideousness ive is serving these days and i probably would have gotten one

when Apple released the iPhone 5 in Slate & Black, they had a lot of Problems with visible silver Scratches, so a iPhone 5 looked horrible after 1 Month of normal use. To Fix that, i think they made the iPhone 5S in Space-Grey (which also looks a lot better) and the iPhone 5C in a Plastic-Case to fix that problem (if they would just change the Color on the 5 to SpaceGrey, People wont be able differentiate between the devices) :)

That's a shame.

I would like to see the 5c refreshed as an updated entry-level device, perhaps with Touch ID and NFC to enable Apple pay.

It's certainly a very popular model, at least here in the UK. It opens up Apple to a market segment who may have otherwise purchased an Android device.

I guess they just couldn't get the parts anymore, tbh.

That was my first thought too when I saw the headline! :D

Did Tim Cook not realize how ridiculous it sounded (even if there's certainly some truth to it) when one of the richest and most powerful tech companies in the world said they were discontinuing a product because they couldn't find parts for it? If only they had some sort of connections or manufacturing partners they could turn to...

They chose not to continue the iPod because it was cost prohibitive to try to do so for a product that was no longer popular. If the iPhone 5C is discontinued, it will be for the same reason, it's not popular enough to justify the effort and expense.

Yeah, the 5c is a great device, but the 8GB model was a mistake. The OS takes up half of that, so you're always running out of space even if your needs are modest. Very frustrating user experience.

Let me get this straight, they are still manufacturing iPhone 4ses? For replacements only I hope?

Anyway, all the buzz behind the next "c" model, I do not see it happening. The c line seemed doomed to begin with. It sold decently, and better then quite a few Android phones in the US, however it just didn't fit in Apple's product line. It's their first plastic phone since the 3GS and while it felt sturdy, it was still plastic. I love the design of the 5c, even after knocking it for quite a while. I just don't see them carrying it on.

Another thing to remember is the 5c was launched to take the place of the iPhone 5 in Apple's 2013 lineup. If Apple were planning to continue the line, they would have released a 5sc at the Sept keynote. Instead, they went with the old pricing strategy: being the new model in at $199*, drop last year's flagship to $99*, and drop the year before that's model to free* and cut the capacity.

*On two year contract

genuinely surprised at this as this is the handset I seem to see (or notice) the most of, particularly in the UK and LV(NV)

I don't think it's about popularity. The 5c spot in the iPhone lineup will get replaced by something else. Maybe Apple is done with 4" displays and we'll see a plastic version of the 6. Honestly A5 and A6 devices should be gone from the lineup next year. Every iOS device should be 64-bit, support Touch ID and have retina display (bye bye 5th gen iPod touch and 1st/2nd gen iPad mini).

I think the 5c is a big turd for apple standards. Never liked it, it always seemed so underwhelming. Also it was not cheap enough to make any sense to me.

They are targeted at two very different costumer segments, and the mid-end, which the 5C targets, is larger by far, compared to the high-end phablet market.

So yeah, I still consider the 5C a flop, and the 6+ doing as it should.

Now that Apple has a new phone body style I don't see the 5s sticking around next year. They've done a couple odd things this year (3rd gen iPad mini to name one) that I don't think really give us a clue about the future. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a 6 style in phone in plastic (new colors) as the base phone model next year.
