Deirdre O'Brien, its head of retail and human resources

I didn’t realize the same person was in charge of both. May explain a lot about employee relations lately.

It’s Apple lol, do you really think they’ll pass on savings to us? Only if market pressures make them and so far that’s not happening.
I don’t thing saving money is the point here. If it was cheaper to produce in the US, it would not have gone to China in the first place. This is about better logistics and bringing a ton of jobs to Arizona. And yes the good optics don’t hurt.

Automated =/= price reduction. Machine maintenance cost is still there, and those employees would get paid very well for servicing those ultra expensive machines. Yes, capitalist will always find a way to get more for less, but…… ahem, maybe they can bend the reality to their will after all.
Over time, it will be cheaper. But setup costs, which I’m sure will be largely borne by TMSC (given the failure of the crystal glass debacle) will be expensive.

Logistics within the USA maybe. But costs to ship worldwide will be ridiculous. Optics are no big deal. People need to realise Apple are a world world company and not just 'Merica

Securing a vital supply chain in case the worst happens in Taiwan I guess makes eminent sense for Apple.

I agree! Shifting away chip production from China/Taiwan is a safer strategy. But this small Asian nation of Arizona, where is this place? Somewhere between Cambodia and India?? In any case, I hope the Arizonese standard of living improves with the creation of new Apple jobs! 🤣

I know it has nothing to do with that subject, but it reminded me that last time they made some business with a plant in Arizona, things went so bad the company went bankrupt (GT Advanced Technologies and their Sapphire).

OMG! It was a hot mess. Whatever happened to the building? It's probably abandoned now.

We all had such high hopes of sapphire glass iPhone screens 😭

We sure did. I was excited about the manufacturing plant. It came so close to reality but poor management and operations got to them. I don’t think Tim Cook will consider them again but maybe a new CEO of Apple will. If it was Elon Musk you know that manufacturing plant will be up and running haha 😂. Thinking about finding that abandoned building and paying a visit. Wanna join? Field trip! Maybe we will find iPhone sapphire screens laying around.

I’m in, haha. One of those big cylinders of sapphire would be pretty nice, though. Let’s see if I can find a photo…

If it were Elon, I’m sure the plant would be in Austin though.

*ah there we go:

True! I agree, not in Az. I found it 😂

Nice find! Hopefully, Apple will use Titanium for the next iPhone.

Apple plans to begin sourcing some of its chips from a plant in Arizona, according to a report from Bloomberg. Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the information in a meeting with engineering employees in Germany back when he was touring Europe.

Cook did not provide details on the chips that Apple will source from Arizona, but Apple supplier TSMC is currently building a fabrication plant near Phoenix. TSMC started the project in 2020, and it will start mass production on 4-nanometer chips in 2024.

Just last week, The Wall Street Journal said that TSMC plans to open a second factory in Arizona, with the $12 billion plant set to manufacture cutting edge next-generation 3-nanometer chips that will likely be used for future Apple devices.

The Biden administration has been aiming to encourage companies to manufacture chips in the United States through financial incentives, while Apple has also been looking to cut down on its reliance on China. TSMC's primary factories are in Taiwan, but it also operates locations in Camas, Washington, as well as design centers in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California.

Can we all just be honest -- This has everything to do with China invading Taiwan in the next couple of years. TSMC should do the right thing and decommission their fabrication completely on the island of Taiwan and the US should help them with that process. If / when China invades, there should be NOTHING there for China to steal.

I just came across a very old Macintosh Performa and it was so refreshing to see “Made In the USA” stamped onto it. It’d be amazing if we could go back to those days, and that was as recently as the ‘90s!

We want things built in our countries but consumers aren’t willing to pay that price.
People will buy them. It is critical that we start making our own things again for the sake of our economy. It's ridiculous we have even reached this point relying on others to produce the things we want.

It’s not ridiculous because it’s simply the most efficient way to build things. Until something goes wrong like a political difference with the country of the supplier. It doesn’t make sense to make everything in one country.

iPhone - Made in the USA (Make it happen, Apple).

TSMC should plan on opening up a third factory plant in Las Vegas, Nevada since there is no business property tax. This will encourage the costs of the chips low thus leading to a cheaper iPhone.
Stating that producing chips in the USA will be cheaper only illustrates you haven’t got the faintest clue what you’re talking about.
