Even Apple's own engineers say this font looks rough on a non-retina screen. How are people missing this?

Because the next update will probably coincide with Apple Retina LED Display, and break compatibility with non-retina laptops.

only half sarcastic.

Oh, What a terrible move! This font looks so "Android-ish". Praying it never happens. There is nothing wrong I can find with Helvetica Neue on OSX and IOS. In fact it looks really classy and contemporary. Please Apple, don't do this.

Judging by the clock, this is a pretty bad idea...

I'd rather keep Helvetica. :(

I honestly can't tell the difference, nothing to be proud of I guess but at the same time it makes me smile reading all these loving and hating comments :).

Thanks for the information. I suppose Apple should get rid of extensions, 3rd party keyboards and actual notifications as well as those are too much like Android?

anything that is less thin...

than that current iOS font looks like an improvement to me.
Same goes for OSX. Hated that thin font from the start. And those "looks like Android" comments. I wouldn't be surprised if Android would get a horrible thin font in the next version because Google thought when Apple does it, it must be sexy and reverse that decision in the next one afterwards.

What exactly is "Android-ish"? Roboto, like San Francisco is very similar to Helvetica and Din. Helvetica Neue is a great print font.

It's not easily readable, for example. Neue is also ugly, but that part is subjective.

SF provides much better readability. Has nothing to do with Android.

To my eye, it looks rather similar to Roboto (the default font in Android)...I understand that Apple likes to have product lines to have somewhat similar interface elements so this doesn't surprise me. I guess I need to see it for real rather than some mockup to make a decision.

This is slightly off topic but I hope iOS 9 offers some big improvements and maybe even a complete overhaul of CarPlay. It is 1/2 there and certainly functional but it has the potential to be "insanely great" and it is just not there yet.

Please no. That font would look terrible on iOS. If anything, give us a choice!

I can confirm that you will have a choice.

San Francisco font will be the standard font in iOS9 but, if you don't like that font and wish to stick with the original iOS font, don't update from iOS8.

I tried using San Francisco on my Mac but didn't like it. I felt that the tracking was too tight. When you replace Helvetica with another font, you're still using all the metrics that Apple uses for Helvetica, so it looks bad in places.

I agree it does look rather odd in some places, which is one of the reasons I hope 10.11 uses it as the default despite my already using it to replace Helvetica Neue. For the most part it still looks better than Helvetica, but takes a little getting used to.

How come when I install San Francisco font on my font book on Yosemite I still can't choose it on the font picker on Outlook?

How about going back to the Jobs-era trend of innovating instead of copying Microsoft and Google?

It would be interesting to see how much of this is caused merely by marketing. Apple no longer run ads on a regular basis that show where they're ahead of their competitors. They just show a product and let their competitors bash them.

After all, one of Apple's ads focused solely on the MagSafe adaptor. Another where PC is playing "Pick-A-Vista".

They could run similar ads with iPhone: Free, quick updates on iOS vs months of waiting on Android. Point out Android 5.0 adoption rates. / iPhones come with a slow motion-camera and iMovie which work together beautifully. / Touch ID lets you get into your phone quickly, pay for things in-app and now, with iPhone 6, let's you buy things in-store. / etc

A hint that this may be happening is on the WWDC invite, under the ominously worded tag line, "the epicenter of change," the font used for "WWDC15" is San Francisco.

I personally liked the font on the first beta of iOS7, which was basically half the thickness of what it is now.

Shrug.

Why not let us choice the system font? Similar like Notes on iOS 6

Scott Forstall... Brilliant. 10/10.
Easier ways of picking fonts in Notes would be lovely as well.

As long as the Bold option doesn't go, I'm good though. I've bad eyesight, and that function saved iOS for me.

Yeah, because when I reach for my phone I expect excitement and feelings of ecstasy from the way my app icons are organized on it...

----------

One doesn't necessarily preclude or even affect the other.

I know the icon thing was a joke... But I actually do. I've organised them so the colours are matched with rows.
blue red blue green black white. It's so pretty I feel so happy when I see it. I'm being legit here btw.

----------

I like it.

I like Helvetica Neue as a font but I also miss Lucida Grande. It seems SF has better readability then HN but is more stylish then LG.

good to see a lot of the haters find their way to this thread with their pompous opinions and reviews

it's a macrumors news thread, some people would still be upset if Apple released a time travel device.

No joke that was a dream I had about a month ago. It could only go 20 years back though, and everyone was pissed about that.

This slogan always bothered me. Shouldn't it be Think Differently?

It was originally "Think Differently". The ad company made a typo, and offered to change it for free, but Steve loved "Think Different", so they went with it. It's different.
