The in-store trade-in and the mail-in trade-in are two different programs run by two different vendors with two different sets of rules.
The mail-in is run by Power-on.
Can't remember who runs the in-store but from what I've seen so far, the mail-in pays better and has more forgiving rules, i.e. they accept water-damaged phones. The in-store program won't.

Anybody have a link to the Apple In Store trade in estimator? I looked all over the site but could not find

att said an iphone 16gb white at&t was 263. a white 32gb was 285.

For an iPhone 4? That sounds hard to believe.

Edit: Yeah, definitely not. Just punched in the pertinent information on AT&T's site and it came up with $123. And that's for a 32GB model.

I just got $115 gift card for my 4 last night at Best Buy. They activated an old phone and transferred my info to it. I'll use the old phone for a couple days until the 5S arrives! I was afraid when the 5S came out, my 4 would drop in value more.

Good news. What was the condition of your phone?

What storage capacity was it and what was it's rated condition?

I don't get it.

Why on earth would you "trade it in" when you can easily get between $350 and $500 for the iPhone 5 on eBay?
I just sold something for $335 on eBay.

$35.20 = eBay fees
$10.02 = PayPal fees
$15.00 = Shipping w/ tracking + signature confirmation
--------
$60.22

So almost 20% of the $335 went to fees and shipping.

Yay eBay.

My iphone 4s was in PRISTINE condition from March 1st 2012 until May, 2013 when I knocked it off the counter (was cleaning the otterbox) and cracked the back and blew one of the speakers. 15 months into my plan. I can officially upgrade Monday but I'm waiting until March (Tax return time). I could have EASILY gotten a great price. It's been in an otterbox since day one. I didn't even know the one speaker was out until 2 months after I dropped it when my finger happened to cover the working speaker.

Now I'll get nothing or close to it.

What if I replace the back? I wish I could fix the speaker, but if I open it that will ruin any chances of getting anything substantial for it, won't it?

:(:(:(:(

I do have to county my blessings tho. It wasn't the front that broke. Apple wants a $200 deductible and I only paid $249 for it anyway. (32gb refurbed).

Only one side is the speaker. The other side is the mic. lol.

The middleman is eBay.
Between their fees along with Paypal fees (and your time setting up the auction and mailing) perhaps a decent, painless alternative is Apple's trade-in program.
Can confirm. Ebay is a pain; I've used it twice, and both horrible experiences. I'm willing to trade-in to avoid the hassle.

In my most recent experience, tried to sell my unlocked 4S in perfect condition for $380. Sold, received payment, and almost shipped the device (it was cleaned up, packed, and I'd planned to drop it off at a USPS after school). Got an email notification that the payment funds were reported as unauthorized; dodged a bloody bullet. Not doing that again.

One of the openings on the bottom of the phone is the microphone, the other is the speaker, so you should actually be concerned if both are making sounds...

That being said, supposedly the back glass of the iPhone is super-easy to replace, but I've never done it myself and I don't know where to tell you to get 'em from.

Sorry... it was an iPhone 4, 32 gb. I've used it daily for 3+ years, but it was still in pretty good shape. I had a screen protector on front and a Magpul case on the back.

Well, ****, that's bumming me out. Best Buy's site lists $150 as the trade-in value and I was banking on getting that.

I think if they offer me $115 tomorrow I'm gonna be passing on getting a phone for the time being.
