What am I supposed to say, what’s the appropriate response ?

Thanks Tim? Or “what difference at this point does it make”?

iCloud on google servers and the encryption keys given to China

Cook deserves some kinda humanitarian And privacy rights advocacy award or something

... /s

With all this buddying up to The Chinese it’s almost like he’s co chairing the China Development Forum

Oh wait, he is!

“State run servers”

That Brings me great comfort! They’ll do the right thing, always!

And I’m supposed to take all of this corrupt baffoon’s virtue signaling seriously?!?

Must be great to run a company where their fans are such fans they will give the CEO a pass for virtually anything including things that go against the core principles of said company, or supposed core principles. And liberals will break it down as “there must be more than meets the eye” or “Tim has to or iPhones won’t be made in China” would never know since he’s complicit at the snap of a finger

Liberals are so tolerant and forgiving of their own even when they become amoral beyond recognition... but no one else

What a nasty globalist this grandpa has become!

Basically iCloud is a trap. Use at your own risk. Assume everything on it is being scrutinized daily by the govt and that your backups are being cloned to another device. The choice is yours whether to use it or not. It certainly isn't necessary.
Are you talking to Chinese forum members, or in general? Apple has some of the most consumer focused privacy policies, so if you're worried about what they're doing with your data you must run a mile from Google, Facebook etc..

Being hosted on google servers and now handing the encryption keys to China, on state run servers, is evidence they dont have “some of the most consumer focused privacy policies”

The cognitive dissonance is impressively strong in the Apple camp!

Are you also aware China has been blocking social media discussion That is against abolishing term limits? This is the same gov that now has apple’s encryption keys

Think about it. It’s so painfully obvious that asking you to “think about it” is quite hyperbolic in nature

Well, as long as you’re not storing illegal materials or engaging in illegal activities then you have nothing to worry about. If you think that the CIA/NSA couldn’t access your iCloud data then I have a bridge that you may be interested in.

Right.

So much for privacy, Apple (at least in China).

psssst - You're not involved in any pro-democracy activities, are you, random-iCloud-user? Do you know of anyone who is?

"We know ... don't deny it"

Wonder if a manga short in the style of Akira can be made of this news? ;)

How does Apple deal with the data of non-citizens who just happen to be visiting or living long term in China? Will their data get sucked into the Chinese data center as well?

Such as Expats?

Seems that if location data is set to China ... then Boom China's iCloud management has got you! Should you change it back to Canada, UK, USA, Australia etc. will they release your iCloud data or no longer have access to it? Not likely.

PS: Must be a busy day for the potus since there is no tweet about this and concern for corporate employees data being at risk.

I don’t see Trudeau cutting off all trade with China or demanding they change their laws either.

Trudeau? Lol ... after his recent India trip making a fool and almost blatantly insulting their culture (not researching before the trip with his family) ... I don't Trudeau is fully aware of how to begin new trade deals. I have a feeling he'd bend any which way to maintain trade. Not saying I'd know how to negotiate but this is where Trump has loads of experience and seems to be working (for the USA) quite well.

Great novel argument

Make sure you keep your house door unlocked and DONT FORGET to PM your SSN and a screen grab of your bank balance. ya know because you have nothing to hide and all?

Once again just because you find privacy to be an esoteric and undesirable concept, doesn’t mean you speak for all

In the same sense, I acknowledge tho I value my privacy, powers that Be would prefer I don’t AND there are many people that would walk around naked in public out of how apathetic they are towards their privacy or lack thereof

It baffles me, but I still acknowledge it

It's always fun to watch MacRumors posters take a complicated and nuanced situation and quickly reduce it to an incredibly simple one-dimensional issue. And not in a good way.

Yes let’s be more open minded about encryption keys handed over, and consume data on state run servers. What could go wrong?

It’s the bigotry against state run servers and skepticism that needs to stop! Not the misdeeds in and of itself

Resist!

Anything that’s connected to the Internet has no privacy. It’s just a fact of life, there’s literally nothing you can do to stop a three letter agency or state actors from accessing your data should they choose to do so. Well, short of never using a cell phone or Internet.

Well if you’re gonna get that morbid and have a defeatist approach— what’s the point of anything? Everyone that was born eventually passes away. It’s our fate as mortals. So why bother to make anything of your life at all? Hmm

Your response isn’t an argument

Why the negativity? You want to do business in China, you follow the local laws or don't do business there. Same with the EU. If you are a company providing cloud services – and who doesn't do that today? – you have to be accommodating of foreign laws if you want to expand into those regions. If you want to expand into the EU, you better abide by this, for example:

Since you're so eager to criticize, please do tell us what you would do differently if you were running Apple. I doubt you're going to come up with anything more practical than pulling your business out of China, but let's see what you've got.

LOL!

Comparing me against the CEO of the most popular company in the world!

I am flattered :D

I wouldn't bow to China so graciously. And I would acknowledge, though US has a massive trade deficit with China, Apple has an entire economy built around it and being the leader of said company, I hold some weight rather than none at all.

instead of supporting China at every turn, and alienating everyone in my company that didn't like Hillary Clinton internally at every turn, I would support USA, use China for what I need to use them for, and acknowledge that diversity extends to diversity of opinion and I don't care which party or candidate you like, I acknowledge that no amount of virtue signaling will change peoples' minds, principles, and morals. So I would do what a tech CEO should: focus on my tech company. Rather than one foot in the door, and one foot out politicking.

I would also use WWDC as a dev conference, not as an opportunity to shill for Michelle Obama.

But that's because when they go low ,I go high, you know what I mean?

Apple: We will always value users' privacy.

Also Apple: goes ahead and stores iCloud data in a data center in China, owned by a company with close links to the Chinese government because they want to suck up to Beijing authorities.

Huge difference between wanting to "suck up" to Beijing authorities and doing what you are required to by law.
