Hey Arn! Apple are trying to take your bread and butter here. They want the Apple Store Online to be the place people gather to talk Apple.

Sounds like a neat idea to me! As long as there's an option to opt out, as I can see many people who won't like to be bugged.

It should work like the Miis on Wiis!

=)

Man I love my Mii.

I love Mii too! :D

You must attain 6502 status by making 500 purchases (Apple products only) before you will be awarded with an avatar.

Further, in keeping with Apple tradition, Steve has deemed that Apple will decide what avatar you want for you. ;)

Ha!

That's what it sounds like. But, if Apple implements it right, like I assume they would (because they wouldn't put it out there if it didn't look/feel good to use) I would think that this could be a huge success.

Shop Online

the reason i shop online is not to talk to people, as long as you can set the privacy to LEAVE ME ALONE i don't really care. i do believe Apple is moving towards "Big Brother"

Coolness

It sounds like a Second Life....

I dont know how they will implement this, unless its all flash or something.
It will be interesting!

Edit: Saw pics....

Do we get an avatar too?!

I think it's pretty cool too. While they could go Second Lifey they could also go sort of iChaty as well and enable webcams. You could actually see people faces just like in those old brick and mortar store they used to have. And maybe even . . . gasp . . . talk to them! The iTunes would be a great dating service. Imagine seeing the people browsing the same or similar artists that you are browsing. It would probably get people to 'hang out' in the store. Artists might even hang out there.

That would be quite the interesting implementation of that. I want to see how this pans out, it could wind up being very cool.

I really hope this doesn't come about. I love to shop online, usually just browsing. I shop online so I'm not being pestered by shop assistants and other shoppers.

Maybe better ability for a shopper to get help, but otherwise, why do you really want to see where other shoppers currently are?

For those that don't want to interact with others you will have the option of making your avatar repel others. It could mutter and cast hard eyes, grope other shoppers, have a bad case of leprosy, be hugely fat and naked, etc. Or you can go the other way and be suspiciously friendly, incredibly perky, more than helpful, etc.

There are infinite other ways to isolate yourself, as some know all too well, and Apple will give you the tools to be creatively alone, to think different (that worked for a while, these things can be time-sensitive).

And, as a bonus, you could get attracting programs so that others will talk to you and treat you like an, well, attractive person. Hot, scantily clad women, or whatever, will come on to you, hoping for a hook-up. Other shoppers will want to hear your opinions on politics, religion and other deep thoughts. People will invite you to gala dinners and events.

This will even work for gamers who haven't seen the sun or washed for months. Those scantily clad hot women will hang on your every rant about Apple's weak video card.

Actually, that whole store thing is awesome. 3D would be really interesting, like those walk-through home remodel programs. They don't necessarily take too much computer to run, do they?

Anyway, having to buy a new computer in order to have an interesting shopping experience at the Apple Store...does it get any better than that?

Compare this to shopping on Amazon, where it is actually difficult to find things with their strange search engine. Hmmm, search, then maps?, street-level views, this leads to an alliance with Google, eh?

I thought Steve stopped smoking weed back in the 80's....

That almost made me spit out my coffee...

Yes, this is another example of "Let's fix a problem that doesn't exist."

One of the main reasons I do what online shopping I do is so that I don't have to be pestered by other people, especially ignorant sales staff.

We don't all require external validation just to be able to make our minds up about a purchase, nor are we all co-dependent. So please, Steve, go spend your money on something else. Thank you.

Yes, but the one thing I want when I am browsing on-line....SPEED.

I think most of you do too with all the "my Firefox is faster than your Safari" arguments. Why would I want to walk around a virtual store?

It might be a fun gimick for the first few times, then I will want my old apple store back.

Yes, I need to have my purchase decisions affirmed by random idiots online.

I think that this thing is wierd and won't work. It looks confusing, and nothing to do with Apple is confusing, hence why it wouldn't work.

Haha, this could be fun!!

<Customer> (to a group of other shop-visitors): "Hey you! may I ask you why not anybody of you buys Macbook Pros these days? They are great and I want to get one!"
<Group>: "OMFG!! NOES!! Don't buy, doooon't!! There are new MBPs coming out anytime, we're waiting for them! Look at macrumors.com for gods sake. DONT BUY!11"
<Apple shop security>: "Sir... may I ask all of you to quietly leave this shop please...?!"
*** JohnDoe has been kicked by Apple shop security ***
*** macrumoaahs has been kicked by Apple shop security ***
*** waitingforMBPupdate has been kicked by Apple shop security ***

This will be GREAT! :D

that would totally be an unforseen by jobs & co. consequence!! i already by word of mouth (as i'm sure almost everyone on this site does) tell people when the best time to buy __x__ product will be. i'd think with this new interactive store implemented, apple will have a harder time reducing stock before new/updated product releases since the online shopping community will be telling each other to just wait 2 more days. just think about everyone out there that doesn't know that apple typically makes new releases on tuesdays. suddenly everyone will and their monday sales toward the end of life for a product will plummet.

This is just a way to allow geeks to continue to meet (or stalk) girls at the grocery store...

Tell me about it

I agree 100%... I actually buy from Apple's online store to avoid the crowds of emo teenagers that populate Apple stores, as well as the "hip" employees that often know less about my computer than I do. The last thing I need is to interact with these people online.

This will never happen, IMO.

I'm always completely underwhelmed after I leave an Apple store. I never have any money to buy anything and people never know as much as me. Worse is when I ask a question and a "genius" starts explaining something completely redundant or off the point, and doesn't answer my question. Oh well its for the masses.

They should make a secret Apple boutique stores for the rumoring super nerds.

brilliant, that would be awesome.

I wonder if they serve beer (or wild turkey) or appletinis (bleech) at the online genius bar. is there a limit?

so long as my avatar can check & edit & delete his/her virtual iphone email inside the "store" better than I can on my US$600 device -

I'll be happy

It does seem like it would take a hefty computer to run it, and I bet it wont work with PPC either.

My iBook wont run Second Life well..... So how will I buy a new MBP if they implement it? D:

Not really - it's a website so processor architecture is irrelevant, and they would have to make it run even on integrated graphics like the GMA 950/X3100 cards or they'd kill half their audience.

Not literally kill them you understand :)

From what I understand, Safari 3 is faster than Firefox.....

could be wrong tho.

I don't want people trying to chat to me when I'm in the real store, so I definitely don't want to interact with anymore when I'm using the online Apple store.
