As long as there is an iOS app, which there is, I think it would help their business. Apple doesn't really make any money from the store.

yes they do. They make billions from the iTunes store. It was never meant to be a major revenue source, it was meant to drive hardware sales; and it doesn't compare to the money made from hardware sales, but they do make a lot of money from iTunes store (even the music store). I don't have a link, there was a graph on here or daring fireball at some stage showing how their profit was broken up between all the different stores (app, music, movie, etc.) They made well over a billion per year from the store, maybe 30% was music sales

EDIT: I could be wrong and that money could be revenue, not profit. I'm searching but I can't find the original story i'm remembering

Versions

Spotify Open: Free, 20 hours p/m limit. When you downgrade from premium or unlimited, you will get open instead of free.
Spotify Free: Free with invitation, unlimited.
Spotify (discontinued): The original, totally free
Spotify day pass (discontinued): £0.99, unlimited, ad-free music for 24 hours
Spotify Unlimited: £4.99 p/m, unlimited, ad-free music
Spotify Premium: £9.99 p/m, unlimited, ad-free music, offline playback option and access from mobile devices

Funny how you can listen to music whole day for a few bucks, but renting a tv show for .99 is not good enough. Apple is being sabotaged. Again.

Via very very simple calculation,

Apple's sold well over 10 billion songs.
They get roughly 30 cents per song.
So total revenue is around $3 billion.

I really doubt the cost of R&D and server maintenance would exceed $3 billion since the inception of the iTunes music store.
So yeah, I agree with you that it's most likely wrong when people make blanket statements like 'apple makes no money from itunes store'.

30 cents? Can i have a link?

rdio

Just use rdio. Its on your phone. It's on the computer. It's 10$ a month for unlimited music. Its a better service and interface than spotify. It's also available right now in the US.

It's awesome

Spotify already gets my vote just based on the desktop interface. Nice pro looking dark grey. Really Apple, all the white space is sooo 2003....blah.... They need to make all views look as cool as the iTunes grid view. It looks much slicker than the boring white list views.

Well what's good for us, musicians and those evil record companies are three very different things. Also neither works in my country, but iTunes at least has gift cards and depending on a person it might be a deal or no deal at all. I personally like to buy and have it on my iPod, but it sounds great if i could buy a day pass to fuel a party.

Gone are the days when people actually mattered. Now we're a bunch of numbers computated by bean counters for capitalistic businesses to make more money. Yes I know nothing in life is free, but it's become increasingly obvious with the growing muscle of such companies as Target, BestBuy and now Apple that we are given fewer choices while being lead to believe that we still have some semblance of freedom to chose what is not available. I remember when I used to shop between CompUSA, CircuitCity, BestBuy and other local small business stores. Now the only place to get electronics locally is BestBuy, or on the rare occasion a small computer supply business.

Choice is an illusion. An illusion big businesses need to perpetuate in order to squelch any competition in order to monopolize a segment. Yes, it's capitalism, but does capitalism actually WORK? When small businesses are folding more and more as the can not compete against the wealth of multi billion dollar enterprises and the middle class is shrinking, I can't help but feel like a Serf in the grips of big businesses and politicians. What does this rant have to do with the thread? If this is true, it's another example of corporations working to take away our freedom of choice in order for them to dominate a market and thus the consumers. Without alternative choices there is little to no competition to keep checks and balances, and with Apple and itunes there is little choice for consumers to utilize itunes with other devices and their digital music. I hope this does come to the US, we need to have more choices to keep large corporations in check, otherwise we're all canon fodder and slaves to the machine.

Apple executives worried about the effects of a free music service might have on the rest of the market. They noted that it's tough to sell something that someone else is giving away, the sources said.

THEY'RE GENIUSES!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if we're dealing with human beings or some kind of superhuman/alien hybrids, but it's plain to see why Steve Jobs is Ace Number One in business and why every company should follow Apple's lead.

Well said!

What, you're not happy with Coke or Pepsi? Walmart or Costco? Democrat or republican?

You must be a radical. I hope you find sanity. In fact, we're having a rally for that...

Ever used Google?

Right. I know that it's the case with apps 30/70, but had no idea how it's with songs. Link or it's BS.

This is common knowledge for people who've followed apple news the last few years.

http://articles.sfgate.com/2006-02-24/business/17280645_1_digital-music-ipod-music-players-itunes

Quote from article:

"Despite those gaudy numbers, analysts say at 99 cents a song, Apple's iTunes business roughly breaks even.

That's because after paying its partners, such as the music labels, Apple receives only about 25 cents to 30 cents per song. Add in operating costs and the business hovers around the break-even point, said Michael McGuire, an analyst at the industry research firm Gartner."

Why were you so lazy you couldn't google it yourself. The amount of time it took you to respond "link or it's BS" you could have searched for yourself. And I'm just a dumb kid. I hope you don't run a business, cause your lack of resourcefulness scares me.

Thanks. I did find it in a minute, relax, kiddo.

Don't be evil Apple.

I'm glad I don't live somewhere like that where freedom is defined by corporate interests. Spotify rocks!

I've never heard of Costco, what strange planet do you live on??

music for 24 hours .99 or .04 an hour
30 to 60 minute show .99 or 1 to 2 dollars an hour.

I would not be surpised if Apple is illegally using it marketing power to keep Spotify from entering in the US.
Apple already got caught once with Amazon. Safe to bet they are doing it again.

Right. I know that it's the case with apps 30/70, but had no idea how it's with songs. Link or it's BS.

No it is common knowlegel. The apps store follow the iTunes model.
Apple explained it cuts way back in what 2004 it was that way.

If this is true then it's a totally dick move by Apple. Can't believe the Yanks don't have spotify yet, it blows everything else out of the water.
As for the poster suggesting radio, are you mad? The reason I switched to spotify was because of the appalling crap playing these days. If you want a different playlist then just get your friends to send you theirs or download one from the net.
