If you're not interested in games Apple TV 3 is still good for you. Sure you miss the Siri search, but it isn't a compelling reason to upgrade

So, in other words, the Apple TV 4 is really only bringing into play a host of features that have little to do with watching TV? Perhaps Apple need to change the name to something like The Pippin 2, that way it might be clearer that this is a hybrid games console based on iOS, that has TV features as a secondary concern.

I can't believe that Siri won't let you dictate into text boxes. That is so bad it's almost a deal-breaker for me. Maybe if they fix that or some killer game comes out, I'll buy it. Still using my ATV2 for now.

Also the password and login situation for tvOS apps is pretty lame - esp. if they keep requiring reseting (mostly the app/channel's fault, but serious wtf).

Do they have the new AppleTV demo-able in stores?

Personally I'd rather have a dedicated "rewind 15 seconds" button on the remote rather than having to invoke siri each time I wondered what someone said.

Except in that case you'd also need a button to turn on captions, as the feature also does that as well
I thought about this and I read that it works for some, not for others (check amazon forum). regardless, that would mean I need to run it off of an iOS device which I may not always have handy for my daughter to utilize. Plus I would imagine this would be a battery drain on said iOS device. Clunky workaround for something that should be easier IMO.

I haven't had any problems with AirPlay and a ATV 3 using a variety of devices, even running in the background on an iPad Air 2. That being said of course it's a clunky work around for something that's an included app on my sucky Blu-Ray player.

I know what they are trying to achieve, but there will be very few people that are able to survive on what the Apple TV offers for at least the coming 1-2 years. Most people will use the Apple TV as an add-on to the TV as opposed to the main content medium. Especially outside the US.

I am outside of US, but AppleTV is the only thing I need, has been for five years now. Yes, I have multiple subs, and wish Apple came out with a plan to integrate all of them, but they are not actually that expensive in the range 8-10 bucks. My favorites are still Netflix, Stan and Crunchyroll (I love Japanese anime) - and Beamer for projecting my movies collection to ATV. Quality is superb. I hardly watch the actual TV stations anymore.

Calm down

Use your iPhone or iPad for data entry. Save you tons of frustration. But I don't disagree with you, it needs a master credential account, but Apple assume we are not lazy people. Luckily you only need to do it once (for every apps).

Every other box is the same as far as I know. Roku seems to be doing fine. Fire tv etc. but this will bomb. The stupidity of some cry baby comments in this place is borderline scary. I can't believe these comments come from active brains

Hoping I don't have to yank the power cord out every 3 or 4 days and restart like I have since the original TV because there is no power button. I always have to store it in an easy accessible place.

I think it is more than a game console.
You can have apps, during the September event they showcased some of them, including one for shopping. There is an app for workout, so you can exercise in front of the tv and there will be apps like VLC for streaming all kind of contents from the web.

As I said if you only want to watch movies Apple TV 3 is still good and is more affordable, so is still a great choice.

Yeah and I haven't had a chance to check my phone app or iPad app but I did read that the Amazon Prime streaming app hasn't been updated in quite a while and is not really "optimized" for the iPhone 6 and higher (whatever that means). I'm just afraid that, even if I employ the clunky workaround, some day it'll stop working b/c Amazon will not be updating the app...

Oh well, when we truly get sick of the built-in Samsung apps in the TV, we'll go w/Roku or something else.

The new AppleTV looks to be a very nice "1.0" into the world of real apps. I'm pretty excited about the possibilities. I wonder if there will be any point where Apple would allow apps that run in the background or if there's some kind of workaround for this particular issue.

The fact that it won't automatically know what your account credentials are for your various Hulu, Netflix etc. accounts is not that big of deal. We can use 1Password for that. It seems that people are more and more making issues such as this into "deal-breakers". I think he may be onto a possible way to make the UX a more pleasant experience but it really is not that big of deal.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that Apple will let more users into the global search soon. This has got to be a temporary floodgate as I'm sure that it will eventually be allowed.

Do Bluetooth keyboards still work? I will have to test this when I get mine.

Apple TV is probably confused by all the exclamation marks you're typing, and I am sure you are too - it must take AGES to do those on a remote. :p

Background mode can be configured for tvOS according to Apple's documentation.
At least background fetch should be available and I don't see a reason to avoid background on Apple TV. One of the reasons why Apple limits apps in background is power efficiency but Apple TV is always connected to a power source so a little bit of background work is not a real problem as long as it doesn't effect performances on the foreground app

The deal killer for me is not being able to plug in a usb to play mp4 videos. I get that I can do it on airplay but that does not always work and I can do it on old gen anyway. I kept the ps3 just for playing videos.
