Man there are some real head scratchers with this box. No 4K support even though iPhone 6s can record it. No universal sign in for content apps that require cable/satellite subscription. Siri can't search apps or Apple Music. Hardly any big name apps available at launch. There's not much in Eddy Cue's world that gives me a lot of confidence. He needs to step it up in a big way or step aside and let someone else take over.

Or maybe, just maybe, Tim Cook might want to try and use some of the products his company is making? This never would have happened if Steve Jobs was there. The new Apple is happy with mediocrity. That's what happens when you have a CEO that leads by delegating.

So, I am still not sure that the 64gb is warranted. Thinking that the 32gb should be more than plenty. I will be buying 2 (one now, for one room, and another later, for another room), so I guess the 32gb will hold me over until I wrap my brain around how 64gb will even be necessary.

In time apple will release updates with new functionality. It's a new OS and like final cut when they rewrote it a few years back many features were missing. But they frequently updated it to add the features back.

Now sounds like you want it jail broken to do illegal stuff.

ROTFL! It's not "illegal" to jailbreak.

I think that was a great review, and I rather wait until Apple really get the ball rolling, and see all the features and updates working well on the the new Apple TV. In the meantime I will enjoy my Roku 4 with 4K!

I wonder if I can get my $17 stupid tax back for asking to get it tomorrow??

Mine still has preparing for shipment as the status... I'll update if it changes.

Ordered 7am PST on preorder morning 64gb version. Portland, OR USA.

"and given the loop’s utility for this sort of thing, it’s puzzling that Apple doesn’t view it as a crucial part of the remote, instead selling it as a silly $13"
They can't know Apple too well, just another money grab.

I would not have thought that "helping you find a remote that is lost in the cushions" to be the killer use case for a loop attachment. I'm not convinced Apple thought that, either. My guess is that they intended the loop to be used as with a Wii, making it exceedingly optional.

People have now stated that they should have included both the loop and HDMI cable in the base, at no charge. I'm sure there is someone saying the same thing about a game controller. It all adds up, people. Which is why they made the correct call, and included none of these things.

I think this single line alphabetical keyboard could work very well with the speed-sensitive trackpads on the remote.

Interesting comment. I was wondering why they did this. But if they went to a grid, wouldn't it just wrap if you went past the end of the line?

People read too much blogs and forums and repeat the same BS. Amazon stop selling Apple TV and chromecast but they did not ban third party resellers. Amazon does have an iOS app and it works great so I don't think it's an issue with app development. No one really knows the true story but I hope someone ports the Amazon video on iOS app to the Apple TV.

Read the Bloomberg article, it goes into effect Oct.29th (so sometime today) and it clearly says 3rd party listings will be removed. But it's just BS right?

I've already ordered one and it is still preparing for shipment. However the reviews look disappointing. That "keyboard" is awful. Thankfully I already have a bluetooth keyboard that will hopefully work with it.

Also the thing that I was really hoping Apple would improve is what Verge touched on is having to register all the apps separately and it doesn't save any "profiles". That is I should be able to log onto my DirecTV account once, link it to my iCloud account and then all the apps could reference that instead of having to register each app individually still. And if you had multiple AppleTV's you wouldn't have to do that on each one.

So that is really disappointing.

Well, no apps were actually
I don't want to sound short but this isn't necessarily the case for everyone.

I have a 2.1 surround sound receiver (Panasonic) that's around 2 - 3 years old and supports ARC. My TV is also Panasonic and around 2 - 3 years old, supporting ARC. However for the life of me I cannot get Dolby encoded movies to play through my HDMI arc source, I have to change to Digital In (optical) in order for the sound to play. Any non Dolby stuff plays fine through ARC. All of my movies are streamed from my phone using the Infuse Pro app.

I'm not using 1990s technology, but I'm dependent on optical and I'm not prepared to upgrade my AV. So my only option is to get a splitter like the one posted earlier (which I'm thankful for! haha)

Just my two cents.

You can ALSO GET A CONVERTER $20-30 bucks. Coax or optical to HDMI, they exist you know... Man.

That's not for Apple to do, it's for Amazon to do. But since Amazon's no longer selling the Apple TV or Chromecast, I'm not sure I'd hold my breath for them to do so.

Fair enough. I don't really care who's doing it or not doing it -- sounds like me, the consumer, gets the short end of the stick. Since I already paid for Amazon Prime and all of my other TV's/streaming boxes work w/it, then I guess it's Apple who won't get my money at this time. They probably don't care, but I wonder if there's others out there like me.

They may be best off to make amends and work with Amazon so Amazon will create an ATV app if they *truly* want their product to be "the future of television" (in my house). I don't see how you can claim to be the future of television but make it non-inclusive.

Do even using AirPlay won't work for Amazon prime?

Personally I'd rather have a dedicated "rewind 15 seconds" button on the remote rather than having to invoke siri each time I wondered what someone said.

I think this single line alphabetical keyboard could work very well with the speed-sensitive trackpads on the remote.

It actually does. Selecting side to side is much, much faster than having to go diagonally such as to pick up the shift key in the second row. Once you get used to the trackpad, you can zip pretty quickly and accurately to the desired letter.

That said, keyboard entry still sucks. But the old layout really sucked too. So it's not like we've lost some fabulous UI, the old UI was awful too. The real solution is to avoid the onscreen keyboard - dictation mostly or an iPhone remote or a bluetooth keyboard.

AirPlay works fine.

I thought about this and I read that it works for some, not for others (check amazon forum). regardless, that would mean I need to run it off of an iOS device which I may not always have handy for my daughter to utilize. Plus I would imagine this would be a battery drain on said iOS device. Clunky workaround for something that should be easier IMO.

I am waiting too. I've learned the hard way to NEVER buy an Apple 1st Gen product.

I buy the best product they can put out, when they put it out. So I'm still on a 17" MBP an iPad 2, Apple tv 2 (it was cheap), and no iPhone (although the 6S would've been the one before I tasted Android freedom).

My PS3s have my streaming needs covered, and my Apple tvs now gather dust.

Waiting on a 17", 2TB SSD MBP (minimum) with hopefully more than 1 dumbass port, an iPad Pro 2 (for my daughter the artist) and a better Apple tv than this before I buy anything Apple again. Oh, and for someone to make aftermarket SSDs for Apple portables, so I can upgrade that and not the whole thing when I run out of space.

Yep, might be quite a while.

I was a little disappointed about the loss of the optical audio.

But there are some relatively cheap adapters to get optical audio on Amazon. like $20-30. Cheaper than a new receiver.

I decided to just change the set up on my system. ATV4->HDMI->TV->optical->receiver.

A downside of this is that I lose the ability to play the ATV sound with the TV off. And I also know that not everyone's TV has a optical out.

But there are good options if you do not want to upgrade your sound system.

I will be doing the same as you. However, I just wish ATV4 would have shipped with 4K support! Maybe in a future update?

The omission of optical audio out is a deal breaker. I just don't want to upgrade my A/V stack to support this right now.

Really too bad, I would've been totally on board for day 1.

That said, if Elgato ever gets around to putting an Eye TV app on it I may be forced to drop some money on a new HDMI capable receiver.
See this thread:

I now have a ViewHD device and it works well with my ATV3 (it provides optical audio out from HDMI input)
http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Extrac...p/B00LKF6CPG/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
So I can keep my current home theatre setup and replace the ATV3 with an ATV4 (eventually - if EyeTV or similar ever comes to TVios apps). It has also solved a lip-sync problem that I had with sending EyeTV from an iMac to a projector and hifi.

I have the Xbox One with Plex and a Kinect and it works pretty well with Plex to navigate the menu but i still find myself using a controller i think you'll find that voice search is a novelty that wears out its welcome pretty quick
I agree. I too thought the Kinect was great with my xb1 the first week and then I stopped using it. Now I feel it's just a gimmick.
I have never used voice search on the Amazon FTV either.

Oh, and now Apple is selling "potential" instead just having the features most want right now.
Oh well, maybe it will be a buy in the 6th or 7th generation. :p
