I pulled the trigger on the 64gb version. Gonna give the my 4K first gen to down to a family member.
Same.

But the new 4K is still deceiving after 4 years.
Same design, similar performance, no U1 chip in the remote...

Anyone know why Apple might not be able to add Thread support to the older Apple TV models? Does it require specific hardware support such as hardware encryption that might not be built into older models?
Great question as I know Nanoleaf enabled Thread for its bulbs and strips via a firmware update.

Where’s that rumoured gaming model as this certainly isn’t it! That’s what I really want to see.
It took Apple 3 years and 8 months to update 5th generation Apple TV 4K, a minor one at that. I think you will be looking at very long wait, considerably longer than PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X becoming widely available.

Correct me if I’m missing something, but Apple can easily add Thread/Matter support to the previous Apple TV 4K by just a firmware software update…
Matter is certainly possible via software update. But Thread requires new hardware (802.15.4) which 5th generation Apple TV 4K probably lacks.

What's the advantage of having a 4K Apple TV if my 4K TV has the Apple TV app? The only thing I can think of is you have to have the Apple TV hardware to have the screensavers. What else am I missing out on by just using the app on my TV?

Logitech discontinued the entire Harmony product line.
They did? Glad I still got mine, works fine with Apple TV and have used it to replace that silly touch thingy, but it's a buggy remote, but with the hub it just picks up where you left it after a reboot.

I just want to know if they fixed the raised blacks and added pass-through audio.

I also would like to know if they have better support for H265 video files.

Can’t wait for proper reviews. I want to upgrade from my 4Ks if Apple is able to somehow fix/add these issues/features.

Honestly, use a universal remote. Harmony ones are far superior
For one, I am told the Harmony remote series has been discontinued. But second, my understanding was that the Siri remote had a couple of functions, namely the Home/TV button, that were never tied to an IR signal to be repeated.

Ordered a new 4K and a spare remote. Existing 4K will go into my son's room to replace the HD and I thought it was worth getting him the new remote as well.

One point that seems to be missing in both the article and the comments is the HomeKit aspect. In regards of HomeKit hub functionality, the AppleTV is the only option with Ethernet to connect wired to your home network. All other options are wireless only, which might be a challenge in crowded networks.

And someone buying the AppleTV with prio on HomeKit functionality (and considering the AV capabilities more as icing on the cake), should prefer the new version over aTV 4K 1st gen., due to superior CPU performance. GPU performance is negligible for that use case.

I have the 1st Gen 4k, I ordered the new one. The 1st gen is selling for around $100 used, mine is in like-new shape. I figure that instead spending $60 on the new remote (which I really want) for $20 more out of pocket I can get an updated model. $20 is worth it to me.
I got an as-new condition 4K for €80. I’m selling the remote for €35. That’s €45 outlay. I used the “AMP” input button on my PS3 remote so it now controls this Apple TV 4K. I don’t need the new remote.

The new model is €200 here. If I can’t sell the remote I’ll have paid €80, if I do sell it I’ll have paid about €45, max €55.

Hah, I don't even know why I bought the new one. I just automatically buy a new Apple TV when they come out because they don't come out very often I guess? But now I can replace the terrible third gen in my workshop with the old 4K, not that I use it very often. And hopefully the new remote will be better.

Why can’t Apple deign to put a USB port on the Apple TV to facilitate external storage? A lot more useful than higher frame rate HDR!

The harmony elite (or any hub based solution) controls via bluetooth, wifi, and IR. So that wouldn’t matter, you can be running an activity that uses all three protocols and it seamlessly controls all of them.

It’s disappointing they have stopped making them but they still support them (for now).

It’s interesting to see the emphasis on being able to AirPlay iPhone 12 60FPS Dolby Vision footage to the new Apple TV 4K. I know myself and a lot of others were never able to AirPlay ANY footage shot on an iPhone 12 series to an Apple TV and have it playback in DV at any frame rate.

I’m hoping the new ATV4K actually lets us AirPlay the Dolby Vision footage finally at any frame rate!
I agree. I took some beautiful footage in the Welsh Brecon Beacons when they were covered in snow. The playback onnthe current 4K Apple TV is quite juddery and disappointing. I'm a bit annoyed to have to pay for another Apple TV, just so I can watch the footage smoothly.

Since they removed the gyroscope in the new remote does this mean you can't play games like Tennis? Kinda disappointing if so...

If ARC/eARC support isn't enabled yet, will this work with the surround system running from my TV's ARC/eARC port?

I have 2 4Ks and 2 HDs, I am not looking to upgrade anytime soon. With LG OLED, the 4K does Dolby Vision/Audio, which is pretty good for me at the moment. I bought both the 4K for around $100 around Thanksgiving, it was the Target gift card deal.
Looks like my family is the only one who love the old Siri remote, we can navigate just fine with it. Skip 10sec is my favorite feature. New remote might make things better, but not worth the upgrade for me.

Does the 2nd gen ATV 4K support Quick Media Switching? Honestly, that and 60fps DV are the only selling points for me. Still probably not enough to get me to spend $180 to upgrade from my 1st gen 4K though. Really the only 60fps Dolby Vision content available is stuff you'd shoot on your iphone.

Quick Media Switching that comes with HDMI 2.1 is appealing to get rid of the black screen when switching back and forth between HDR and SDR, but I haven't heard if this box will actually support it.

Considering you can easily sell a used ATV4K for about $100, the upgrade cost is only $80+taxes.

This is a minor upgrade, including the Remote. And I use the AppleTV Remote App on my phone for AppleTV anyways. And HDR is really only for zealots who are obsessed with framerate and resolution. I still watch movies on VHS sometimes, so this is really cool, but not a must buy.

Higher bitrates when it comes to films & tv shows and the ability to watch iTunes extras to name a couple.

If you’re happy with the quality you’re seeing on your TV and aren’t interested in the extras then you’re good to use the app.
