If you were planning to purchase a new Apple TV 4K with 64GB of storage from Apple in time for the holidays, you may have to look elsewhere.

As spotted on Reddit, the 64GB model is currently out of stock at most Apple retail stores, and estimated to ship in 4-5 weeks on Apple's online store around the world. Orders placed today might not be delivered until as late as early January.

The reason for the delay is unknown. Lengthy shipping estimates can sometimes foreshadow a product refresh, but the Apple TV 4K was just released in late September, so it's unlikely a new model is on the horizon.

Notably, the 32GB model is still available for pickup at most Apple retail stores today, and estimated to ship in approximately one week on Apple's online store in the United States and over a dozen other countries we checked.

The latest Apple TV supports both 4K and HDR video playback. The set-top box starts at $179 in the United States.

If you are looking to purchase an Apple TV 4K with 64GB of storage, some resellers such as Best Buy, Costco, MacMall, Sam's Club, Staples, Target, and Walmart may still have stock available online or in stores.

I recall seeing a little while back that auto refresh-rate switching was going to be enabled in an upcoming OS update for this. Did that happen?

If it happened, and it works, I'll certainly buy one. FireTV HD not doing it is driving me nuts...

A couple streaming services recently offered a free Apple TV with a couple month package from their service. Could certainly have cut into the supply a bit.

Doesn't it also use the same processor the HomePod will utilize? Could have cut into their chip stock too.

I'd like to meet the guy who has used up all 64GB of storage. 32GB is plenty since you can't store video and only Apps. Does the App store even have 32GB of Apps? LOL.

The size limit of a tvOS app bundle has increased from 200 MB to 4 GB, so you can include more media in your submission and provide a complete, rich user experience upon installation. Also, tvOS apps can use On-Demand Resources to host up to 20 GB of additional content on the App Store.

Having said that, most apps use a small fraction of that. A couple hundred megs at most.

The fact that these things even COME in 64GB in the first place is baffling to me. The apps are all super small, and ATV is a streaming box, not a video repository. Seems like an unnecessary SKU in Apple's product lineup, so I wouldn't be surprised if they summarily ended one of the two storage size options.

Just my 5 cents.. I took advantage of the AT&T DirecTV NOW deal last year where new customers who prepay 4 months of the service get a FREE Apple TV. The are running this deal for a short time now for the Apple TV 4K. It's worth it (almost) to get the dang new remote (with raised edge on home button)

Using their monopoly power, if you have AT&T Mobile you get all you can eat [no charge against your plan] cell data usage watching DirecTV NOW (fantastic for road trips on LTE highways).

They are beta testing a cloud DVR.

Hello. Nice to meet you.

No, I haven't actually used up all the storage yet. But I like the new 4K video screensavers and have auto-download checked. Those short videos can eat up storage pretty quickly. I can easily imagine 64 gb filling up just with those.

As for the shortage, perhaps it's that the device is selling really well.

I buy another one if they offer a 256GB storage model so it will be future proof in case Apple decides that local storage might be a good idea for 4K ATV.

Might be due to flash memory sourcing problems. They raised the price of the iPad Pro in September because of it. With all the new iPhone 8/8+/X storages starting at 64gb, they might be taking precedence over the Apple TV.
Yeah, I would bet it's a flash memory shortage/lower priority myself based on the current flash memory situation which has been an issue for months now.

I had to wait weeks and weeks for my 64GB model while the 32GB was available next day. This is not new and has been the case since shortly after launch.
As for why, who knows.

Yes, with the upcoming 11.2 (should land before Xmas I guess) we get automatic HDR and refresh rate switching.

We are still waiting for Amazon to release their Amazon (Prime) Video app... less than 4 weeks to go... fingers crossed.

And yeah, buying a 64 GB version is B.S. However, the price difference is not that much, so I guess people are willing to pay that (small) extra (bigger = better) => more money for Apple.

The amount of interesting games is a joke though, so indeed there is no reason to get 64 GB. Developers could change that easily...

Where are the Telltale games ?
Where is The Witness ?
Where is Flower ?
Where is e.g. Returner 77 ?
Where is The Room 1/2/3 ?

Between the remote and tvOS, this thing is not worth $200. It doesn't even seem like an Apple product. It feels like a 3rd party device designed to work with Apple products. But, that's just me. In retrospect, I should have got the 32gb.

You really just proved his point. As of right now it is nearly impossible to consume the space on a 32gb model, even if you intentionally tried to do so.
Is it possible that this can change in the future? Maybe, but there is no indication of this happening. Game developers abandoned the Apple TV years ago and there is no sign of the 4k generation turning this around.
For now and the foreseeable future, the 32gb version will be perfect for nearly all users.
Even if you want to believe that you are the exception that needs the extra space, the state of the App Store and dev community won’t enable this.
I can not in good conscience recommend the 64GB version, even at such a small price premium.

I never understand posts like these.
why? its been problem since i got it and neither Frontier, apple, onkyo, netflix of vizio can tell me why. 90% of the time i press play on nexflix the wheel just spins... every other streaming app works fine and my smart tv built in netflix works fine as it does on all other devices... just not on my 4k apple tv
