The fact that these things even COME in 64GB in the first place is baffling to me. The apps are all super small, and ATV is a streaming box, not a video repository. Seems like an unnecessary SKU in Apple's product lineup, so I wouldn't be surprised if they summarily ended one of the two storage size options.
I've set my TV to download the new 4k screen savers daily, But its still playing the original 3 it used when i first bought it. Its not downloading new ones.Hello. Nice to meet you.
No, I haven't actually used up all the storage yet. But I like the new 4K video screensavers and have auto-download checked. Those short videos can eat up storage pretty quickly. I can easily imagine 64 gb filling up just with those.
As for the shortage, perhaps it's that the device is selling really well.
Doubt it, they wouldn’t do a mid cycle refresh for that and it’s honestly not even necessaryPerhaps foreshadowing the advent of a 128 GB model replacing the 64 GB one?
Seems a bit early though.
The storage is not just used for apps, but also as cache for album art and other images.I'd like to meet the guy who has used up all 64GB of storage. 32GB is plenty since you can't store video and only Apps. Does the App store even have 32GB of Apps? LOL.
I have mine set to daily an either way they delete he old ones (previous days) when they download the new onesHello. Nice to meet you.

I recall seeing a little while back that auto refresh-rate switching was going to be enabled in an upcoming OS update for this. Did that happen?
If it happened, and it works, I'll certainly buy one. FireTV HD not doing it is driving me nuts...
I think it is a "MacRumors Tech Support, how may I help you?" request.I never understand posts like these.
You really just proved his point. As of right now it is nearly impossible to consume the space on a 32gb model, even if you intentionally tried to do so.
Is it possible that this can change in the future? Maybe, but there is no indication of this happening. Game developers abandoned the Apple TV years ago and there is no sign of the 4k generation turning this around.
For now and the foreseeable future, the 32gb version will be perfect for nearly all users.
Even if you want to believe that you are the exception that needs the extra space, the state of the App Store and dev community won’t enable this.
I can not in good conscience recommend the 64GB version, even at such a small price premium.

My ATV has replaced Blockbuster. I use it to rent only.
Can’t use Youtube on it since it doesn’t support 4k or HDR. No Amazon. The lack of auto switching video modes is TEDIUS. So I leave it set to 24hz DV and rent movies on it. XB1x for all else.
Movies I want to own I buy on disc so I get the full Atmos sound and of course superior image.
Oh? This is why I think the 32gb model is plenty.![]()
Haha, that was too funny! You have to connect to internet to make it work.

Just my 5 cents.. I took advantage of the AT&T DirecTV NOW deal last year where new customers who prepay 4 months of the service get a FREE Apple TV. The are running this deal for a short time now for the Apple TV 4K. It's worth it (almost) to get the dang new remote (with raised edge on home button)
Using their monopoly power, if you have AT&T Mobile you get all you can eat [no charge against your plan] cell data usage watching DirecTV NOW (fantastic for road trips on LTE highways).
They are beta testing a cloud DVR.
This is definitely the reason.Might be due to flash memory sourcing problems. They raised the price of the iPad Pro in September because of it. With all the new iPhone 8/8+/X storages starting at 64gb, they might be taking precedence over the Apple TV.
Do you have source for this? While of course there is a buffer for the file, I can't find anything suggesting that the entire file is ever present on the Apple TV. This would be a poor implementation and defeats the point of being a steaming device in the first place. I have a lot of purchased 4k content and they all start at full quality faster than the Apple TV can change to HDR mode. When you are steaming there is simply no need to bring the whole file down. Not quite. Don't forget ATV temporarily downloads the iTunes film. It STILL does this with the 4K one too more the duration of the film. An iTunes 4K HEVC film file is 20GB for a 1hr 45min film.

The nice sensation of choosing a larger capacity on an Apple product and not feeling ripped off. It happens once every 10/15 years, let us enyoy it.And yeah, buying a 64 GB version is B.S. However, the price difference is not that much, so I guess people are willing to pay that (small) extra (bigger = better) => more money for Apple
Same was happening to me, I've changed my preferences for screensaver and next turned back setting as it was before. All of a sudden it started working as expectedI've set my TV to download the new 4k screen savers daily, But its still playing the original 3 it used when i first bought it. Its not downloading new ones.
Actually, I did get one new one -- and now it's playing only that one. So something apparently is a bit wonky.I've set my TV to download the new 4k screen savers daily, But its still playing the original 3 it used when i first bought it. Its not downloading new ones.

I am currently at 42.25GB used out of 59.6GB. And, this is after cleaning up, and deleting a bunch of un-needed apps two days ago.
Don't assume everyone uses their ATVs the same way you do.
I have, and no, it was not intentional.
EDIT: I think I misread some posts, and I do not have a 32GB model, so I have not maxed out the storage on one. That said, on my 64GB model, it is perfectly reasonable to say that it is possible to utilize more than 32GB of storage.
I buy another one if they offer a 256GB storage model so it will be future proof in case Apple decides that local storage might be a good idea for 4K ATV.
