If it doesn’t display Dolby Vision on the ATV does that mean your TV doesn’t support it? I have a 2015 LG OLED.

Thanks! I installed the Monoprice cable, but still see random "flashes" - especially when navigating the Home screen icons. I even replaced the ATV4K and tried other HDMI inputs. I'm at a loss on this one

Have you had a chance to try the recent LG firmware update (04.70.07)? That fixed this problem for me as well.

Chunter, I have the exact same problem. Occasional flashes on the home screen on my LG C7P. Both Apple TV 4K and LG have most current firmware. I even exchanged the Apple TV. Very frustrating. For now I’m just using HDR and not Dolby vision.

I have a brand new LG C7P (65") and have the exact same problem. When using Dobly Vision, the screen flickers every once in awhile. Also I noticed sometime the screen will just go black (rarely, but it happens), yet sound and the movie still play from my AVR. Switching the AVR's input then back to the Apple TV 4k restores the image.

This seems to be a widespread known problem, as I've read it reported many, many times on various forums. Hopefully LG and Apple will release a new firmware soon. I've tried several HDMI cables (all rated 18gbps) and same problem. Switching from a format other than Dolby Vision fixes the problem. Google Ultra seems to work fine, in addition to other inputs.

Take comfort in knowing at least it's a "normal" issue, and not isolated to you. If I do get a fix or have any other information, I'll be sure to update if I remember.

Installed my ATV4K last night. Ran into a recurring issue where the Dolby Vision badge randomly appears which causes a slight stutter in playback when listening to music. Sometimes the screen will go black during this.

My tv is a 2017 LG C7. Playback selected is 4k DV at 60Hz.

Anybody else experiencing this? The HDMI cable is a new high-speed Amazon cable with 18 Gbps capability. Use the same cables for Xbox One S and 4K DTV boxes.

Same on 1 of 3 of my LG C7 TVs, switched a couple of cables, changed Apple TV4k, even changed mainboard of the TV - nothing helped. Whats' interesting 2 of my other installs work flawlessly. The ones working 65', the one not working 55'. Any ideas would be helpful.

Using LG WebOS 3.50.08 and TVos 11.2

I personally think all these issues are still related to the HDMI cables. I have the B7 OLED and ATV4K and have been dealing with all these issues as well. I think the short answer is that Dolby Vision puts a much bigger strain on the HDMI bandwidth vs HDR or SDR 4:2:0 (though 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 also strains the cable bandwidth).

I don't have any issues when running SDR or HDR 4:2:0, but when I use 4:2:2/4:4:4 (SDR) or Dolby Vision I do notice that the OLED will drop to black screen or just static at times. I've gone through a number of HDMI cables, and nearly all my new and old HDMI cables can handle HDR 4:2:0, but anything else requires a proper cable. I bought a 5m Ruipro fiber optic HDMI cable (I need about 25' for my setup) and that cable worked great for video, but could not handle HDMI ARC from Dolby Digital+ audio (would just be digital garble). I ended up with Monoprice DynamicView HDMI cable 25', and that seems to be working now. Though, since the 11.2 update, I've set my default video to SDR 4:2:0 and let content matching invoke the HDR or DV settings when needed so I can't say definitively that this is all cable related (I do think the ATV4K is more finicky than my Oppo 203 UHD player).

That all said, I still have an issue when playing Dolby Vision content on the ATV4K where the screen shifts for a split second through the content. It feels like pixel shifting by the TV to address burn in, but I disabled all of that and still see the shift occur on the home screen, in movies, etc. I don't get the same result playing a Dolby Vision UHD through the Oppo (Despicable Me 1 & 2), so I have to believe this is the ATV4K causing the issues. And the same shift happened with all the HDMI cables that I've tested, including the $150 Ruipro.

Hope this helps folks narrow down their issues. I would also recommend setting default Video to SDR and let the content matching do the changes for you. Vincent Teoh pointed out that playing SDR content as HDR will not result in the ideal picture settings, and leaving the TV in HDR mode does use quite a bit more power vs SDR settings, so its possible that leaving your defaults as HDR for the OLED may decrease the TV's lifespan.

Update: Replaced the HDMI cable which appears to have solved the problem.

All my problems with ATV 4k and LG OLED TV were solved when I obtained the Belkin cable from Apple. I am aware there are less costly cables but all I tried produced one problem or another. I wasted money buying all those cables when I just could have purchased the Belkin for thirty bucks. I know I will get flack for this post but it's the God-honest truth.

The monoprice premium certified cables for 18gbs are what I used for my LG OLED and the ATV4k. No problems. In fact I use them on all of my equipment including one 25' one. No issues on anything.
These are the cables you need for 4k HDR. About $1 a foot. No need to pay more.

Hey, so I have a OLED 55" E6 and when I watch Netflix through the tv and select a Dolby Vision movie the Dolby Vision drop-down appears in the corner as I'm sure you're aware. But when I play the exact movie through Apple TV the Dolby Vision doesn't kick in.
So what's the optimal setting you've decided on? I like the HDR but is DV the better way? My only concern is there's only a couple movies in DV so would I be forcing the display to show everything in DV is I change my ATV to DV?

Wish it just automatically selected the appropriate display when selecting .....

Sounds like a cable issue. I have the 55" LG OLED S7 and get the Dolby Vision badge without fail on ATV DV content, but I was having various issues before that with a different cable. The one that works for me is the same one recommended earlier in this thread -- the *certified* high-speed cable from Monoprice. And it's cheap.

Why would you get slack for that? Dolby Vision is demanding on cables and Belkin is a solid name. As I said above, I solved my issues with the Monoprice certified premium cable, but I'm sure Apple did their homework.

Ordered a couple of new cables 2.0 26AWG. Will test and report.
Well, I'm here to say that after changing the cable to an unbranded thick 26 awg hdmi 2.0 cable everything works like a charm. My cable is 5m long, I think that was the reason for such behaviour.

Can I ask what’s the best way to get Dolby Vision. I have a new LG C7 OLED and currently have my ATV going into my AVR and then to the TV. My AVR does not support Dolby Vision (yet) so my question is this;

I know I need to plug the ATV direct to my TV to get Dolby Vision but, then, how do I get the sound?

Is it, A, via optical cable or

B would the ARC that is enabled pass the sound back to my AVR?

What’s the best way to set this up? Thanks.

Using optical cable will limit your sound to DD5.1/PCM 2.0 max, and your TV will convert any incoming signal that goes beyond this, (depending on what it supports), which means, when using this option, it's best to set the ATV to DD5.1 output.

ARC will pass the audio, this is best, to utilize DD+ audio. When the ATV4/ATV 4K is set to Best audio the ATV takes the incoming stereo, DD5.1 or DD+ audio, mixes it with the ATV system sounds and outputs an LPCM signal, this will either be PCM 2.0 or Multi-channel PCM on your AVR, depending on the content's audio. At this point in time, because of the way Apple does this, DD+Atmos is not possible. Supposedly Apple is working on implementing DD+Atmos, but, who knows how or when.

Thanks for your reply. So is it a simple case of just connecting the HDMI from the ATV direct to the TV and then ARC will sort everything out? I mean, will I still use the HDMI input 2 on the TV to view, which is the ARC input, even if the ATV will be plugged into HDMI 2 on the TV?

Optical cable will also allow DTS5.1 but appleTV does not pass DTS in standard conf.
Any audio output via TV will be limited by the TV’s support for audio passthrough.
