I have a Sony 65X900E. Best upscaler I've ever seen. ATV is not as good in direct comparison. But it's not just the upscaling. I still have to switch into 4K HDR from 4K SDR, or the Apple TV will apply fake HDR to the upscaled 1080p picture, as well as any other non-HDR signal. Very little 1080p content is in HDR, and not that much 4K at present either. And by forcing my ATV to accept 4K settings, it bypasses other signal processing the Sony TV does when upscaling 1080p signals.

Ok, so say a show or app is in 720p and you have the ATV on 1080p SDR, does the ATV do the upscaling from 720p to 1080p and then your TV takes over from there and go from 1080p to 4k?

about time. I can understand Amazon has created their own marketplace and can control who enters it but their blockade on most Apple products is frustrating. I'd purchase more items via Amazon if they didn't try and pick winners and losers (and face it, fire-anything was never going to come out as winner over Apple products).
So true, and conversely, I can't help but thinking Apple's eagerness to get Amazon Prime on the 4K ATV4 seems interestingly a tacit acknowledgement of their own disappointing results of talks with content owners/distributors to procure vast and diverse amounts of content available in iTunes for streaming.

But to most owners of the new AppleTV 4K, whether it's from iTunes or Amazon Prime, the delivery vehicle should be moot as long as the content is there and available for them.

Amazon accepts and starts developing the app.

I feel certain that a company as big as Amazon keeps alpha versions of apps for all platforms warm at all times, regardless of the political / business disposition of the platform. Same as Apple keeping an ARM version of macOS warm in the lab. It's about being ready for business changes. No way did Amazon just cold-start the AppleTV app this year.

Honestly they probably didn’t start it until earlier this year. It’ll most likely be an update to the current iOS app.

Most companies don’t spend money on paths they aren’t for sure going to take. Apple is rare beast in that regard.

Yes, that's correct. I haven't really compared the ATV to my TV with 720p, but if it isn't as good, I can always select 720p as the output for a specific service or program.

I wonder if the Apple watches and Macbooks will begin appearing on Amazon. Or perhaps it's simply a one product deal.

This had nothing to do with rivalry, it's business. Amazon discontinued selling Apple TV as a negotiation tactic for lower royalties on IAP.

Nope.

"Amazon is coming to the TV app and all Apple TVs later this year with Amazon Prime Video." - Tim Cook

and, again, at the September event, apple's statement was "later this year", not "coming soon", not "tomorrow", not "when ATV 4K ships", "later this year". Again, when Amazon's new HDR capable Fire TV is ready to sell, then we will see that and ATVs on Amazon, and the Amazon Prime app. It's about competition and business, not what the consumer wants.
The listing has been removed.
I saw the listing, the link took you to a 64GB listing that seemed incomplete, none for sale, I clicked on "32GB" and it said "available from these marketplace sellers".

So, I think what happened was one or more marketplace sellers created the listing to sell the ATV 4K, the listing people listed it, but, then management caught wind of it and deleted it. They won't let marketplace sellers sell ATV until they themselves sell it.

When Amazon pulled the ATVs from the store, they used the excuse that it didn't play amazon prime videos, so they didn't want their customers to get confused about buying then complaining and returning it because it didn't play prime videos. The real reason: they want to sell their own streamer box (Fire TV). (This paragraph is for those that haven't been following what's up with Amazon and Apple...they are business competitors, not partners. As of this summer, they are working out a deal where Apple will be able to sell ATVs on Amazon and Amazon will provide Amazon Prime app for the ATV, at the same time. Part of working this out is apple's policy on the percentage they take for in-app purchases. Rumor says it will be UHD compatible when released, and the amazon prime app will be coming to all ATVs (except 1st gen.), according to Amazon.) That's it in a nut shell, maybe a few of you are caught up now? (edit: fixed amazon app info.)

For those asking about ATV3, according to Amazon themselves, it was in the plans back in June.

Ah, thanks, I knew I read that somewhere, but, couldn't find it when I was looking for it a month ago...I thought Tim Cook said it.

So, yes, all Apple TVs will get Amazon Prime: "You asked (a lot). We listened. Amazon Prime Video is coming to the TV App and all Apple TVs this year."

Yeah, there is that. It also has BBC iPlayer unlike my AppleTV 3rd Gen (a big deal for TV Viewing in the UK). I'm pretty sure I will upgrade to the 4K AppleTV, but I'll probably wait until Amazon Prime is available, and there is more news on whether the YouTube app will be updated to support 4K.
PS4 has the BBC player? (I should probably be googling this instead of just lazily responding, but here we are). Any idea if the BBC player works in the US?

FYI ...looks like this listing has been deleted on Amazon. There appears to be no AppleTV hardware available (or listed) on Amazon.

Still looking for Amazon Prime on the ATV. I'll probably cut Netflix out of the lineup when it comes.

Nearly two years after Amazon stopped selling the Apple TV, a listing for the Apple TV 4K has been spotted on the website by 9to5Mac.

The Apple TV 4K is currently listed as out of stock, but the fact that it has been added back is fueling speculation that Amazon may be prepared to launch its Prime Video app on the tvOS App Store imminently.

At its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple confirmed that Amazon Prime Video is coming to Apple TV later this year. At its iPhone X event earlier this month, it reiterated that release date.

An unverified rumor earlier this week claimed Amazon Prime Video may launch on the Apple TV alongside the debut of the NFL's Thursday Night Football games on the online retailer's streaming video service this week.

Amazon Video allows Prime members to instantly stream tens of thousands of movies and TV episodes, with hundreds of thousands of titles available to buy or rent, including many that are 4K and HDR.

Amazon removed all Apple TV and Chromecast product listings from its website in October 2015 because the devices did not offer Prime Video, which it said may cause confusion for customers.

Of course, the Apple TV and Chromecast also compete with Amazon's own Fire TV streaming media players.

Apple said Amazon had never submitted a Prime Video app for the tvOS App Store, or else it would have been happy to offer it. The app has been available for iPhone and iPad and several other platforms for many years.

Whatever the case may be, it appears Prime Video for Apple TV might finally be just around the corner.

[doublepost=1509158399][/doublepost]Hopefully Apple will stop messing around and just get this done, I’m getting tired of having to stream Amazon Prime from my iPad and iPhone to my Apple TV because they can’t settle their differences with Amazon, who’s the customer here?

Apple is not producing Amazon's app. Amazon is the one who should stop "messing around" - Regardless. I am also getting impatient.

Yes but Apple promoted the Amazon app during the keynote to introduce and sell the ATV4K. Apple could push Amazon a little harder, because right now, they're looking at a false advertising claim to promote early sales. It's Apple that's on the line here, and presumably they wouldn't have done that woot an agreement with Amazon, which ought to give Apple some leverage over Amazon's release date ...

Sorry, I am pretty sure Apple does not get to tell Amazon what to do. This is 100% on Amazon. 100%.

If you say so. That's not gonna stop me from returning my ATV 4K for a full refund come January, or class action lawsuits against Apple when Amzon doesn't deliver on Apples promises ...

Good luck with that. Cute.
