Some good news on the other hand is the fact that Infuse Pro can do local playback of "Good Game Episode 5" which is a YouTube Red series that I have stored locally in 4K and it's encoded using Google's VP9 codec. So just like ProTube on iOS it seems like Infuse Pro on tvOS have no issues with adding software decoding of the VP9 codec and it plays without any hiccups. As Infuse have no transcoding capabilities whatsoever it has to have some kind of VP9 decoder within the app, otherwise playback wouldn't be possible. Just like I'm still able to playback 4K content on YouTube on my iPad Pro using ProTube.

Can Infuse Pro software-decode VP9 Profile 2 content such as YouTube HDR videos?

I don't know if this has already been addressed because I didn't read the entire thread...but for what purpose would you want a $180 UltraHD 4k streaming box if you watch stuff in SD, not even HD, and can't tell the difference?

Future proofing (even if Apple continues to support it, third party developers don't, as we experienced with our old Mac Mini... couldn't handle Hulu anymore, etc)? Other features which might not run (this would be our first Apple TV)?

I don't think AppleTV was ever compatible with SDTVs and it always required HDMI (720p).

As I said, we use HDMI for the Roku. We've used it for other devices, and would presume to use it.

But our TV is small enough (32" I think, and we're happy with that size) that we don't see a difference between SD and HD video. Our internet service provider is TWC, which isn't the most reliable, so between not needing to squeeze more data through that bottleneck and saving a buck per rental (or however much cheaper it is for Netflix per month, etc), we opt--and would like to continue to opt--for SD instead of HD or 4K.

Those of you now dissing HD, have you considered the possibility that there's something broken inside of you? There's some hole in your life that you're trying to fill with meaningless specs?

You guys wouldn't shut up about how amazing HD was a few years ago. Now you're complaining how it isn't enough.

Meanwhile, I'm happy as a clam watching Deep Space Nine on Netflix in SD.

I could probably watch it at an even lower resolution and still be fine with it. Black and white might be too much for me... IDK, Captain Proton sequences in Voyager were obnoxious, but I'm not sure if that's because of the intentionally low production value or the black and white.

I remember people on this forum years ago, fully supporting Steve Jobs for only offering 720p in iTunes when most other places were 1080p
Funny isn't it :)
